I hate anticyclones. They mean no hint of interesting weather. However anticyclones, the ones that move over Australia are maybe good at directing interesting weather this way but usually that interesting weather usually goes the other way or fizzles out when it gets here. Anticyclones are OK to move in after a spell of inclement weather but we don't seem to get the inclement weather for the anticyclone to move in after to appreciate them. Quite often an annoying bubble of high pressure 'pops' up off the coast of Canterbury here in NZ just to be a nuisance to the weather here. >We call it anticyclonic gloom, do you get similar or just sunshine with your >large anticyclones. Here in ChCh we do get lots of anticyclonic gloom. In the winter it gives Christchurch much of the smog that this city is quite well known for. This recent anticyclone has given us dull days and with it sitting off the coast near the Chathams and not likely to move, the dull days are replaced by cold annoying easterlies with lots of scundgy cloud with hints of drizzle mainly night and morning. Last summer we were plagued by anticyclones with the La Nina period making high pressure cells moving over NZ rather than tracking north. Nothing interesting really happened here for the whole period. It was so boring weather-wise. > >Sign me up, come spring I will get those gray days of perfectly unbroken >strato-cu, when 200kms north it is going off with supercells. We don't even get supercells here, too coastal our weather influences. Oops, for "freezing fog" read "rime ice(ing)", perhaps - by freezing fog I mean the temperature is well below zero C (-10 typically), you can't see your feet for the murk and everything is liberally coated in hoar frost and ice with the tails pointing away from what little wind there is... and the whole country shivers to a stop. This is usually associated with a Scandanavian high dragging easterlies across us, with the HP close enough to stop snow showers forming across the North Sea... Don't know what this is called in AU / NZ... southern NZ must get similar but for easterlies read westerlies? Ben and I headed out along the Cunningham to see what was happening to the west of the Divide...unfortunately, mid level cloud aplenty and limited convection was there, but lots of strong/pulsy convections on the divide itself! We headed back to Boonah to meet up with James where we were met with a fairly impressive site! A nice line of storms had formed, and thunder/lightning was audible! Ben and I quickly darted west to get closer to the storm and got caught up in it...we got moderate and locally heavy rain - with a fair bit of water on the road just to the south of Aratula. We went back to Boonah, where unfortunately most of the area had turned into rain. So Ben and I headed up north along Ipswich-Boonah Rd and eventually with some looping about, got into Ipswich with moderate/heavy rain on the Warrego. We saw some very nice CG's at Ipswich, and then headed back along the Ipswich Mwy and to avoid the traffic snarls took Logan Mwy and then onto the Gateway Mwy. Unfortunately we didn't have change for the first toll, so to avoid the ~5min queue I decided to throw 2 bucks in ($1.60 total) and give the person behind me 40c less to pay! Very nice lightning about, and it pissed down (technical crude jargon) for a good part of the journey! We eventually made our way to the bayside suburbs...a little bit of work with heavy traffic (and going over a speed bump at 60km/h - sorry Ben!) The guster was VERY interesting, lots of funnelly type lowerings (as in 20-30 all up) forming and disipatting and moving quite rapidly on the gust front. A nice shelf to the north visible from Cleveland, and still some good CG's about! That's a very quick wrap up...we'll do a chase report soon! WELL WELL WELL Anthony, I too was playing with the cells near Ipswich and as I was speeding along the Logan Mwy at 4.28pm my sister yelled "slow down they've got a radar gun in that car....." As I tried to make sence of what in hell she was babbling about and looked at the offending maroon telstar speeding past, I realised that it wasn't a radar gun the passenger was holding but a video camera. And indeed it was Anthony and Ben. Chaser convergence again???. It was funny also that only 15 minutes or so before this I was scoffing how we ended up in a decent cell and Anthony was probably missing out somewhere south of Brisbane. Wrong again... One quite interesting point about the lightning was that nearly all of the flashes from that cell were ground strikes. Anyhow Anthony/Ben I will have to have a look at the video to see how my grey mazda looks in heavy rain. All in all it was a good day. Yesterday we had a brilliant shelf cloud moving in from the W-SW ahead of and with a line of storms aligned N-S from about 4pm. Incredible turbulence and perfect contrast with the low sun gave great colours. On the southern edge there was a large prong and this passed over Lismore with very heavy rain and possible hail. Hail was reported earlier between Casino and Lismore. This line of storms had looked rather weak and 'wintry' in appearance with wispy, relatively low tops at about 3pm. However much larger towers punched through on approach and preceded the shelf cloud formation and frequent lightning. The storm weakened quickly just as it hit my place about 4.20pm with brief strong W gusts followed by light-mod rain. Today very large storms developed out to sea early and persisted well into the afternoon. To the west a cloud band dissipated prior to storm development on the ranges early afternoon. The storms from SE QLD propagated into NE NSW moving towards the SE. Large congestus shot up in front of the storm cluster with ragged base features soon coming into view. By about 3pm a shelf cloud began forming from my W to N, stretching probably 20-30 kilometres N-S. Frequenct CGs occurred behind this mostly to my W. The shelf cloud developed beautiful laminar bandings while the leading edge has an incredible turbulence and boiling affect to it. Cold W gusts hit just ahead of heavy rain and very close CGs. I could see the shelf cloud advance to the E and spread over Byron Bay and Ballina. Again the storm seemed to lose intensity at my location, though the system was much larger than the day before and lightning persisted longer. Pretty damn amazing to have good storms in July, let alone 2 in a row, and with 2 of the best shelf cloud formations I have ever seen! Pics will follow shortly. regards, Michael ================================================================== Michael Bath mailto:mbath at ozemail.com.au McLeans Ridges NSW http://australiasevereweather.com/ Australia http://www.lightningphotography.com/ Secretary ASWA Inc. http://www.severeweather.asn.au/ ================================================================== +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 21:47:33 +1000 From: Anthony Cornelius X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.72 [en] (Win98; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: Today's Chase Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi Damien Nope...can't be me, I never speed while storm chasing!!! (Now why do I get the feeling people won't believe me here...) Actually...at 4:28pm we were on the Gateway Mwy...but at 4:18pm we were on the Logan Mwy, and going through the footage...there's what possibly could be your car there at 4:18pm - it's difficult to tell, but the car is in the right lane, and then we overtake the car...and then a ute is following me and then overtook me...now he had to be flying!!! A bit before that...there's a VERY awesome CG caught on film (I'm having difficult capturing it though...because it seems to sit in between frames sometimes when I go through it). Is this the situation to which you mentioned? Your sister would not be the only person who thinks my car is a police car! I get it a lot on thunderstorm or shower chases...for some reason since it has a Cb aerial, and since I'm holding a video camera, a lot of people often slow down around me!!! It's quite humerous, I guess the advantage is that most people let me through though!
