The 14 UTC (Monday night) surface dewpoint is around 10C, with the sounding hinting at some moisture depth. Speed shear is pretty good, directional shear is not quite there. The caveat: a strong inversion at 500 hPa might give convection a hard time if it persists. The inversion is absent from the 11 UTC Albany sounding, and might thus be a local effect associated with the mid-level clouds in the Perth area. Given some daytime heating some low-topped but vigorous Cu/TCu might stretch that vorticity just enough for another funnel or two. If the mid-level inversion goes, there might be more. Yesterday was absolutely copy book West Coast cold front stuff (not surprising seeing as it was a cold front - but unusual for us to have enough moisture around for this normal development though). Watching the radar and sky, this guster actually developed as a new line ahead of the old decaying line which had moved off the ranges about 3:00pm. As it passed Sumner only parts of it were precipitating and it was still developing. Precipitation long the entire front had occurred by the time it reached the eastern suburbs. I also noticed plenty of scuddy lowerings with obvious vertical movement but nothing organised. While we are talking fronts, the cloud and drizzle on Saturday morning seemed rather warm frontish to me. The development was a match, as was the obvious air mass temp rise at the trailing edge. However, I am willing to admit that the activity around Coonabarabran & Moree yesterday was something else and perhaps centered on a forming low which has now moved off the NWNSW coast. My comments were restricted to my obs here which seem to be good for a fair arc North to Gladstone at least. Yesterday in northern NSW / Southern OLD, however, was a classic warm season situation though - look at the pics/video snaps taken by James and others; I was scratching my head wondering what time of year it was, how many supercells were out there and how many tornadoes (if any!) touched down. It was quite awesome, as I happened to be watching Moree radar at the 'explosive time' around noon. One minute there were only scattered showers. Around 30 minutes later there were cells popping up and going red all over the shop. I've come across a nifty little Java applet which illustrates the effect that changes in air temperature and dewpoint have on the condensation level, and another which allows you to 'build your own congesting cumulus' - actually, the last time I tried I got it to rain, so I may need to change the description - and if anyone can get a tornado out of it could you please let the rest of us know, and I'll change the description to read 'build your own supercell'...... These are 2 great little demos to play with when you're trying to understand the interrelationships between atmospheric variables (or alternatively, suffering from a severe lack of storms while the rest of the country gambols about amid gust fronts, lightning & funnels)..... Go to 'MSC's Weather Cafe' at http://www.rubix.net.au/~cadence/forecasting.htm and go down to the Just for Fun Section.... and then if you really have to, after all of this, you can go to the Weather Calculator, turn your speakers up loud and play with the 'Cricket Chirps'. .....what's wrong with my sense of humour Maud??????? I must say it was a great day and one I will remember as a special event. Firstly because it was winter and severe storms are usually quite rare at this time year in NNSW and SE Qld. And secondly, it made me feel wierd why I wasn't wearing shorts!!! These storms were large and by no means winter. I also believe that it was not cold frontal as they developed on a developing trough. Two main lines were evident - one over the N coast NSW and SEQld and another where I was located. Unfortunately, the trough where I was located did not show until the localised explosive activity. Perhaps there were insufficient air pressure readings. I think that the 4 hPa charts were useless in picking this feature. Thanks for the satpics. I also believe that this event was extremely complicated in that drier air moved in later and probably helped kick up activity. Well I left at 4:30am - yes in the morning. I suspected that storms would develop from around the 10am mark. They did in a way but much weaker and over mountainous regions. Altocumulus castellanus developed from the so-called line which was observed just SW of Gunnedah. I remained in the area for the next 3 hours. Storms that were developing to the west from around 12:30pm became hidden by castallenus but were not major. Panic began to set in. Why the hell was I here. Why isn't anything happening. I rang Michael twice to see what he can see and even commented "there is nothing major happening". By around 1pm, I could only see large cumulus breaking the cap to the NW but they didn't look very impressive though I watched with interest as they were becoming stronger. At this time, Michael rang and suggested "red on radar". What a feeling that was - I was almost speechless. However, it was associated with cells further west or NW of the cells I was observing. Within a half an hour of travelling, we stopped at Boggabri. From here I could see a major storm hidden behind the main storm. Cells were developing literally everywhere. We continued on to Narrabri and within 2km of there stopped for a quick photograph. This cell had a flanking line developing and maintained its intensity for the whole time I could see it - 1:30pm onwards to about 4pm at least. I suspect it was a supercell. There were storms right around me on the horizon. Most cells were strong and had developed so rapidly that thicker altostratus form of anvils were observed. Some storms stretched for about 100km or so. Obviously with so much cold air, hail was to be expected. I didn't observe any hail myself but heard a couple of reports as follows: - a car and caravan overturned due to the amount of hail on the road - most probably the Coonabarabran major cell - an area north of Tamworth was mentioned on the local news as having hail and strong winds - I would say this was significant event if it was mentioned on the news. As I headed N towards the Moree area, I noticed some storms were weakening and the major storm I had observed heading towards Narrabri had crossed the road and was heading rapidly east so we turned back to Narrabri. It was also a massive cell that seemed to dominate. All in all, it was a very exciting day but what made it more exciting were the phone calls and messages. As the whole area exploded, I has that many messages of encouragement, updates, wanting observations of what was happening that I was finding it hard to catch up, take more photos and video. I looked like "Inspector Gadget" with a camera and video hanging off my neck a pen and notepad in my pocket and a mobile phone. I would hate to think what cars and semis passing by were thinking. Thanks a lot for all that guys. I really wish other people were able to be there but it was a working day I suppose. I did take about 30 or more photographs and video footage. Hopefully they will come out ok. I am really glad that the Queensland contingent also went out in force. I will attend to your reports upon sending this. I will put a full report online soon. I will also outline on that report some of the errors Jimmy Deguara ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------- Jimmy Deguara from Schofields, Sydney President of Australian Severe Weather Association Inc. Hi Jane, everybody, You don't really need to advertise when you are on the road, except if you come into a big town where cb'ers might be on....I know what it's like when you're talking to someone & people transmit over the top of you......you can always change channels I suppose.....btw, truckies use chns 29, 30 & 40 on UHF (it depends on what highway you're on). A good idea would be to have a CB radio & a UHF.......UHF for the trucks (great for finding out where the radar units are :-) ) & the cb to keep in touch with the group. Ahh well, that's my 2c worth......
