I have seen the following: 1. Motherboard fried, telephone in phone socket of modem melted, modem okay. 2. Hard disk fried, mouse fried, rest of computer okay. 3. insulation on tel cable to modem melted, svga card fried, modem okay. 4. I have however replaced hundreds of modems where only the modem was fried. There just aren't any logical explanations. But the most hair-raising of all was a sudden storm just after I had installed a new hard disk and loaded it. The Thunderstorm Warning was hoisted but we had not yet seen any flashes or heard any thunder. I was setting up the modem when lightning struck and melted the steel grille over the window 45 cm from the monitor. A lightning ball of estimated diameter 25-30cm immediately formed about a foot above the monitor, passed between the client and myself who were both seated at the computer, touched the fridge making a scorch mark on it, and then passed THROUGH a closed glass window without doing any damage. No damage to modem or PC. Phil <>< Phil Smith Director Doctor Disk Limited Unit B, 4th Floor, Imperial Heights Belair Gardens, Shatin, NT HONG KONG S.A.R. THE SPACE AGENCY said on its science web site that the Solar and Heliographic Observatory satellite recorded a massive solar flare, called an X-class flare, at about 6:37 a.m. ET Wednesday. Streams of electromagnetic energy erupting from the flare disrupted some radio communications, the announcement said. SOHO, a joint project of NASA and the European Space Agency, also detected two coronal mass ejections, huge clouds of electrified gas, erupting from the sun Monday and Tuesday. The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, which predicts the effects of solar eruptions, said there was a 40 percent chance that the mass ejection would trigger a disruption of Earth^Òs magnetic field by Friday. This could create aurora lights reaching into the mid-latitudes, which would include the southern United States. Aurora lights are common in the far northern and southern latitudes. The coronal mass ejection sent a bubble of plasma, or electrified gas, toward the Earth at more than 2 million miles an hour. The first shock wave of the fast-moving mass was expected to smash into Earth^Òs magnetosphere, the magnetic field that surrounds the planet, on Thursday. Material from a second, more powerful ejection is expected Friday. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Sender: jra at upnaway.com X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.6 (32) Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 08:14:45 +0800 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: Ira Fehlberg Subject: aus-wx: More Radar and Sats for Perth's Tornado... Do I recall correctly that Biddington St. is well on the west side of Spencer St.? (was Spencer St. renamed Fremantle Road??) My folks are in Bernice Way and my Aunt is at 38 Berehaven Ave., both on the East side of Spencer St. Given how localised this event was, it is not surprising that they heard nothing of it. It is interesting how these coldies are quite indiscriminate as to time of day. All they need is a decent cold front it appears. I'm not even sure anymore that a great deal of vertical shear is needed either - just some good deep forced convection with horizontal shear at the frontal boundary to spin it up and a good jet overhead. Tornadoes in the Eastern States associated with severe thunderstorms show a marked preference for afternoon/evening, presumably corresponding to the time of day when best convection is available. This means for all you Victorians and Taswegians that the Aurora Australis should give a brilliant display over the next few nights. So if you are sufficiently far from Melbourne or Geelong and the sky is clear, don't forget to go out for a look. In the middle of the fifties this happened and the Aurora was bright enough to read by at 11:00pm when one went outdoors at Terang in Western Victoria. After the street lights turned off at midnight, it was even more brilliant. If anyone sees it or gets photos I would love to hear about it. >From here in Hong Kong we usually cannot even see any stars on a clear night because of the brilliance of the lights of the city. And the Aurora doesn't come within a bull's roar. I already had some weird effects on my handphone yesterday afternoon which were blamed on the solar flares. The farmstay cottage we stayed at was just north of Oberon at around 1000 metres altitude. On the eastern side of the cottage there was a large hill(s) at around 400 feet higher than us (would have been perfect as a ski slope) and the rest of the property was surrounded by smaller hills in 100 to 250 feet range. This all made for a great opportunity to observe cold air drainage at its best! Here are my obs for the area. Min Max Monday 9 Tuesday -5 9.5 Wednesday -7 6.5 Thursday -8.5 7.5 Friday -6 The days were basically full of sunshine and we took a good pic of the trout stream on the day of the very cold morning and there were large fingers of ice hanging from bushes there. This place remained shaded until 3:30pm (as it was at the foot of the 400 ft hill) and the ice remained there after each frost and built on itself each day. The stream looked like something from the snowy mountains, it was beautiful. All in all, a great experience, even if we didn't get that cold outbreak.
