The first meteor was a bright white with bits falling off it while the second one was a much larger, bright greenish blue and was the best I have ever seen. I wonder if anyone else saw these meteors while watching for the eclipse? - Paul G. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Sender: mbath at pop.ozemail.com.au X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.1 Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2000 08:57:34 +1000 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: Michael Bath Subject: Re: aus-wx: Very Spectacular Meteors... I only spent a total of about 15 minutes watching the sky, so there must have been plenty of meteors about. Two of them were almost directly overhead going from E to W and the third lower in the sky to my SE heading towards the SW. This was after 11pm. Weather here at 9am is mostly sunny and cool with large cu out to sea and SSW winds. regards, Michael At 15:24 16/07/2000 -0700, you wrote: >Hi everyone, > Last night there were a couple of very spectacular meteors around >10:30pm. Yes it was very bright in Bathurst. There was some cloud cover over Bathurst at around 9.55pm when the Eclipse began, and quickly disappeared, very clear night for viewing all types of stars, moons, meteorites and whatever else the sky threw at us. I hope everyone enjoyed the show.. Date: Sun, 16 Jul 2000 17:06:06 PDT Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi all, I saw 2 meteors from Canberra, a very small one and one more spectacular one that shot across from NNE to SSW. The change in the number of stars visible over the half hour period from around 10.30 to 11.00 was quite dramatic. It underlined how much of the stellar sky is obscured during bright full-moon periods. No hint of any aurora - although the movement effect of some distant car headlights gave me a brief hope that I might be in luck. Once you have seen the aurora, there is no mistaking it. I have been fortunate enough to see it twice. Once while camping in northern Tasmania in the early 80's - it started with some sky flickering that I first thought was related to storm activity. This then grew in intensity to become a series of curtains of light of differing colours (mainly red and green that I remember) sweeping from the southern horizon and reaching to just about overhead before fading. It was very pretty and lasted several hours. The second time was about 10yrs ago in a plane flying over the north pole (from Japan to the UK). The pilot dimmed the cabin lights and we all had a great view. I didn't realise at the time that we were also getting a great dose of short short-wave radiation!! Moderate to fresh SE winds in Canberra this morning with a few low-capped passing cu (2/8) and temp of 9. (I also enjoyed some nice brief snow showers and small hail from northward moving glaciated cu/low topped cb yesterday whilst in the Snowy Mtns). Looking forward to the series of fronts we are expecting from mid-week. Anyone else from NZ would like to put a report in here??? > >No hint of any aurora - although the movement effect >of some distant car headlights gave me a brief >hope that I might be in luck. It sounds like it may of been a bit of a fizzer. As I said the cloud cover was persistent. >Once you have seen the aurora, there is no mistaking >it. > >I have been fortunate enough to see it twice. It >was very pretty and lasted several hours. > That must of been the same auroras i saw here in NZ whilst driving a train to Arthur's Pass one clear night. The show was that spectacular, I nearly had to stop the train, turn the lights off and observe the spectacle. ( much to the annoyance of train control) I swore black and blue that I did not have my video camera with me. The colours were the same as decribed above. I saw another similar show 10 years later also driving a train through the Southern Alps to Arthurs Pass. That was equally as spectacular, with the light beams really stretching overhead. Another display, similar to the above spectacles, I saw across the Canterbury Plains about midnight on a Sunday night, a couple of weeks after the 1990s event. The date I can't remember, just off hand. Red and Green colours as if 100 red and green torches were being shined upwards from off the horizon. Amazing! Movement was quite slow for that one. Again, I didn't have my video camera with me. Damn and must worser words than that were quoted.
