The air W of MEL is nearly saturated at the surface, so rain might be abundant. Maybe the instability is sufficient for some electricity upstairs. MEL radar shows high reflectivity core (a.k.a. Have had steady rain here since i got up, but nothing spectacular. I have had 9.5mm from this event so far, pretty tame when looking at radar. My interest is with the fronts due to move through later this morning and afternoon. Hoping for a squall line along the front and cold air cb's behind it. The sat pic shows some pretty impressive tops on some cold air cb's out west :) Pressure here is 999, and the northerly has dropped off, last night it was howling, wouldn't be surprised to here reports of damage. well, off to class, hopefully cancelled :) Nick (clayton South) ----- Original Message ----- From: "MSC - Jane ONeill" To: Sent: Wednesday, July 19, 2000 7:40 AM Subject: aus-wx: RE: MELB RADAR GOING OFF!!!!!!!!!!!! > > Raining steadily atm - sounds like a 10-20mm - gutters running everywhere in > the eastern suburbs, water across the road in Balwyn (takes at least 10mm in > half an hour for that to happen in that particular spot)!! > > Front's due through Melbourne between 11am & 2pm & temps at 10,000' drop > from -4 to -9. There's a few spits of rain that aren't that far off sleet as the humidity isn't that high at around 70%, the clouds are quite high. I still think we could get a bit of sleet/snow tonight. Impressive colours but only about 3mm in AWS guage and 0.4 in last 10 min. I remember this effect happening on the 28th of May as well - followed shortly by heavy snow in Canberra. Temps in Wagga and Canberra were however about 5 degrees lower that day than they are currently - so there will be no repeat today. Still I saw some nice virga this morning moving in ahead of the rain band. We now (11.00am) have moderate rain, fresh to strong NW winds and 8 degrees. Should be some heavy snowfalls up high today... I also taped it in time lapse, so it looks quite cool - I only taped until it was completely out... then I needed to sleep. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi all, Well I feel like a celebration, we finally got a storm over our house aswell :) Whilst writing an email to the list about the weather in Melbourne, I forgot to check our radar, even though I don't think there was much to look at. When I moved the car out of the driveway to goto work I was stopped dead by a flash from the sky above. I stopped the car jumped out and was face to face with a nice guster, I didn't even have time to get the camera, although it was still quite dark and the sun was still below the eastern horizon. I saw lightning once again, this time I saw the bolt, but no thunder with it :( As it passed over head the wind subsided and the rain fell harder. Being happy I drove to work even though I was now 15 minutes late, oops. At work I heard a news report that a house in our suburb had been struck by lightning causing about $40,000 in damage, not bad for one strike. So I guess that will teach me not to look at Melbournes radar again hehehe (Joking) Andrew +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "MSC - Jane ONeill" To: Subject: RE: aus-wx: moon Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2000 17:23:19 +1000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook IMO, Build 9.0.2416 (9.0.2910.0) Importance: Normal Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com You can get around this problem by setting video camera on infinity (or mountains or whatever you have in your viewfinder when it's set on infinity). This sorts the problem out of the camera trying to refocus on raindrops, people walking past, sof edges of clouds, too little light, too much light - ad inifinitum..... have had perfect results ever since I've been doing this, and a lot less videographer frustration! Looking at the charts, I was inclined to dismiss Lindsay's hopes for snow, but now I'm not so sure. All the progs put the Blue Mountains on the 540 line for 12z tonight, not normally low enough to give surface temps below 2C here. However, the uppers for Mt Gambier this morning showed temps of -30 at 500hPa and a freezing level of around 860, while the latest satpix show cloud thinning west of the divide, but still a few lumps and a good water vapour density, which is supported by dew point depressions of only 1 or 2 degrees at 7pm at places like Parkes, Dubbo and Trangie, but 6 to 8 at Cobar and Broken Hill. If anything is going to happen, I think it will be in the next few hours, as all models are raising thicknesses by 00z tomorrow, and the drier and warmer air is likely to arrive soon after midnight. It is all very borderline. Meantime, the latest GASP run has thicknesses below 532 from SE Victoria to around Mudgee on Tuesday morning, with 850 temps between -2 and -5 the full length of the NSW Divide. Last night's EC puts the southern half of NSW south of the 536 line on both Monday and Tuesday nights, while the 00z NOGAPS puts a conservative 540 along the Murray Valley on Tuesday morning and the 00z MRF, just in, is moving things much more slowly so that any action is not yet into its timeframe. In the absence of anything actually happening, at least the speculation is interesting.
