Although they had us down for around 3 to 4 degrees this morning and it got to zero degrees. We had a final burst of rain last night around 7pm that gave us another 3mm of rain (4mm to 9am this morning) which included sleet as the temp got to 2.5 before the rain stopped. More cloud came in during the night as it got colder but I didn't personally observe any snow. There have been thunderstorms on six of the last seven days, three of them severe, and where I currently am, in Heinola (about 140km north of Helsinki), we've just had our fourth thunderstorm of the day! Fun for the meteorologically inclined, not so fun to run in (and as if bringing an injury over with me wasn't enough, I managed to get myself disqualified today for visiting a wrong control point). The most dramatic day was Saturday; just a common garden-variety thunderstorm where we were at the time, in Tampere, but Lahti (about 30km south of where we are now) had severe flash flooding, and I saw some footage on TV of a damage path in a forest which looked decidedly tornadic. I haven't seen a proper chart for days, but it seems as if we're in a humid SE flow just on the eastern side of a near-stationary trough. Temperatures are near normal (maxs in the low 20s) but the humidity is very high - I'd estimate dewpoints in the mid- to high teens. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hello folks, Project Atmosphere Australia online will run again for schools from late August until early October. This time we are going to closely focus on Sydney's weather and tie in the Olympics, especially for overseas classes in a 'weather and sport' theme. A question: we usually have guests on student email lists - meteorologists and particular experts. I would love to tap into some of the expertise and enthusiasm you folks have and if you are willing, be an online guest for a week or two at most. Anyone from Sydney area interested? I guess we may be after daily weather observations from there as part of the things we will do to get into discussing how the weather impacts upon the games and the performance and health of athletes. Answering a few questions may also be a possibility. A report on severe weather if there is any may come into it. The students are very enthusiastic and really enjoy having online guests - I think the guests often have more fun though! We may have a BOM person along as well and an environmental health expert from Macquarie Uni, and some atheletes? Working on that one. To see more about the 'paa-ask' email list and what form the interaction takes, the guidelines for classes, go to: http://www.schools.ash.org.au/paa/experts.htm Cheers everyone, Eyes to the skies, as always...some digital pics of recent storms up this way will follow as soon as I have new batteries for my digital camera and can get the images downloaded to computer. A small low seems to be forming off the coast somewhere southwest of Mt Gambier. Pressures are dropping to 998hPa in SA from 1002 in Melbourne (& 1012 in Albury). Such a steep pressure gradient over such a small distance may be indicative of a small but rather intense circulation, and this is borne out by the latest gmsd image http://www.npmoc.navy.mil/satimages/gmsd.jpg showing a 'bend' in the cloud, and the radar showing precip near Adelaide coming from the SW while in central Victoria it is coming from the NW.
