g'day

I have checked the BOM forecast for NE NSW - For the Hunter region
Wednesday
Isolated showers and possible snowfalls on ranges. Wind turning cold southwest
to southerly.
Usually when they forecast for the Hunter they say snow on the Barrington tops(1400-1585m), but this time they're saying possible snowfalls on the ranges
At the moment no forecast for snow for the Northern Tablelands.  Snow on higher ground is forecasted for the Central tablelands. Gee, the 540 line fair way into Aust for thurs/fri.
For every 100m the temps drops 0.769C - I read this somewhere.  It was 5.8 here this morning and is currently 20.2C at 11:20am, and just a slight breeze.

cheers
Sam

It is a bit hard to try and figure out what has gone wrong without examining the site first hand. (And please remember that I am a dumb electrician - not one of these gurus with a Phd.) >From the information that provided I would hazard to guess that it was a remote-end earth that caused the problem. First an ASCII map. [ ]<-lightning [ ] ** ** [ * * house * * telephone ] * * * * exchange ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- 2000 * ground 1000 * * 500* * 250 * 125 * 75 * 0 * * * * voltage profile of the ground When current is injected into the earth there is a voltage rise at the point of injection. This is governed by the trusty law of V=IR (v is voltage, I is current, and r is resistance). Assuming an average lighting stroke of 10 kA (10,000 amps) and an earth resistance of 0.5 ohm per metre then within 1 metre of the lightning stroke the earth mat will rise to 5,000 volts when compared to a remote location. The further one gets away from the point of contact the lower the voltage rise. (As per the voltage profile shown above.) The interesting part is when you connect two point via an electrical conductor (eg, a telephone line or pay TV cable.) When the lightning hits near the house, the earth mat of the house rises to, say, 1000 volts. But at the remote location the earth mat is still at 0 (zero) volts. So if you are inside the house, you are at a potential of 1000 volts. Since everything else in the house is also a 1000 volts there is no voltage difference (or potential) and you are OK. However, there is an object inside your house (telephone, pay-TV outlet) that is a 0 (zero) volts. A difference of 1000 V from yourself. Ouch! Conversely, inside the telephone exchange they are at 0 (zero) volts. The problem for them is that they now have one live wire (out of the odd 10,000 or so wires coming inside the exchange) that is now at 1000 volts. In the old days of wooden houses (or wooden construction on the inside) having a telephone inside the house was no real danger. If you happened to be silly enough to use the phone during a storm (in spit of the warning inside the telephone book) the wooden construction would insulate you from the effects of a remote end earth. The trouble is now days a computer is tied to the (good) electrical earth at your end and, of course, the telephone exchange (pay-TV booster) is also tied to a good electrical earth at it's end. During a close in strike (to you) you have the classical problem of having a remote end earth inside your house. The Telstra pay-TV network has a surge arrester located near where the cable comes inside the house. I am told that this is good for controlling surges up to 6,000 V (but I have no idea what the clamping current is, or the response time). And remember that this is on an underground network. If one is using Optus' overhead (or the few locations where Telstra has overhead) you are exposed to much more. In the specific example that started this discussion, there might (and I repeat might) have been a difference of potential between the earth reference the pay-TV surge arrester used (located on one side of the building) and the earth reference given to the PC via the 240 GPO (power point). The LAN card was the weakest link, so, zap! Now that I have scared you - what can you do? The easiest thing to do is to disconnect every electrical appliance you love when a storm approaches. I personally disconnect the TV, VCR, microwave, Hi-Fi, PC. And I mean disconnect. Pull the plug out of the wall. Disconnect the aerial from the back of the TV/VCR. Disconnect the phone line from the back of the modem. Disconnect the LAN cable from between the cable modem and the PC. Resign yourself to not being able to watch the lightning tracker on the PC as the lightning bolt aims straight for your house. Be like me, and hide under the bed, with the tail between the legs whenever there is a storm about. A little bit of whimpering also relieves the stress. (Works for me! :) ) Surge arresters are a good investment, but remember, you get what you pay for. For the PC, remember to get a surge arrester that also includes an inlet/outlet for the telephone. For a few extra dollars above the price of a good arrester one can buy a small UPS that will not only protect you against surges but also offer a controlled shutdown. If you live in an area prone to lightning strikes another alternative is to have your electrician install an arrester at the main switchboard to protect the whole house (but this will not protect the telephone). For those with cable modem, I notice that there a surge arresters that can be placed in series in the LAN line. Some food for thought for the next storm season. The latest run of the AVN 191 model accessed through NOAA's READY site has 1000-500mb thicknesses of less than 526 centred on NW Victoria (around Mildura) at 12z on Wednesday with 500mb temps of less than -35!! Whatever happens it should be a very interesting week. Having just bought a new pair of X-C ski boots, I would be very happy to give them a run in from my front door (in Canberra) later this week. My real ambition is to ski down the slopes of the new Parliament House ( I should wear an ASWA t-shirt when this event actually happens...). The last time this may have been remotely possible was in October 1987 - just before the new Parliament House was opened when around 4cm briefly settled in central Canberra. Since then the Parliament House gardeners have been nicely grooming the slopes waiting for the right fall of snow to put them to their proper use!! Needless to say the weather discussion board at ski.com.au has been working itself into a lather ahead of this week's event with talk of a foot of snow in Cooma etc (notwithstanding the attempts of some members of this list to inject a little meteorological science into the unbridled enthusiasm that has taken root there). Still this is rapidly turning into one of best years for snow in the Australian Alps for many years - so they can't really be blamed for getting a little carried away... (and my own skis are ready to go just in case the wilder predictions do just happen to come off...) I am an electrican with Advance Energy. During storms I have watched the Gpats lightning tracker and noticed th current upto and beyond 250,000 amps. Very rarely below 100,000 amps. This in itself is truely
unbelievable. 300mA (milliamps) will kill a person no problem.  So if the theory of 10,000 amps has been put in place, just how high would the voltage be after a lightning strike.

I have had so many calls where switch boards at houses have been basically blown off the wall, and meters and wiring completely fried. Even if a simple problem like a flock of galahs happen to fly through two power lines of 66,000 volts would cause a massive surge and destroy alot of appliances.. This did happen in Bathurst on Xmas Eve 1998. 5000 people blacked out from 8.30pm. So even if you didnt have a storm in your immediate area, without surge protection, bye bye appliances..

This is going to sound like a plug for Advance Energy, but we do sell UPS units.  We have two types of units, one for city dwellers and the other for more Rural Customers. The cheapest city unit will keep a P III running for about 40 min during a blackout. Of course we have dearer units which will keep pc's running alot longer. There is also Software with the UPS which will keep on eye on voltage, battery load, load of UPS. The rural unit has a Voltage Regulator, which will keep voltage at 240 V and no lower or higher if something happens to supply coming into house.

Of course the UPS do have surge protectors as well.  UPS sytems we have can cost upto $10,000 for bigger companies protecting alot of equipment..

If anyone is interested in a UPS, Advance Energy will deliver to your area. The Company is EP & T.

Please email me at davidkc at advanceenergy.com.au with  your details and I will send the price list to you of these units.

My phone number at work is 132795 extension 3605.

Distance unknown." then about 30 seconds later...... "T S E of Murtoa! Goodbye SDS" then..... "10 knots. Raining" Paul's obs fit in with the radar which is currently showing a line of precip well ahead of the front (pre-frontal trough?). One of the best things is that the pre-frontal trough is heading for Melbourne!! Pressure is sagging slowly - 1004hPa in the eastern suburbs, 14.8C, dewpoint 3.6C, NW wind gusting to 32kmh. Macca reported a possible 80kmh windgust in the city this afternoon by SMS also. Thank you to whoever in the mobile phone industry decided that SMS was a goer - it has proven to be one of the best and cheapest ways of receiving updates when you are on chases from those parked in front of computers - and also an excellent way of getting info back from the field as Paul has just shown. ...sitting here with the Lightning Detector on......
