Wagga looks reasonably unstable up to around the 550mb level - so there could be a few showers around this pm. BUT I then looked a bit wider and noted that Sydney has an LI of -0.3 and Williamtown in the Hunter has an LI of -5.2!!! (I am sure that I must be reading it incorrectly.... but maybe, just maybe, there will be some reasonable action around this afternoon in the Hunter??) Don's got more background than I do.From memory Jindabyne doesn't even have a rainfall observing site, very unusual for a town of its size. The Berridale site closed sometime in the 50s (as a temperature site anyway - there's still a rainfall site there). It's one of the ones I'm investiagting for possible 'undiscovered' extreme minima in NSW, as its mean min for July over its period of record is around -3.5 and I imagine there's a fair chance it has been around the -15 mark at some time, especially if it had snow cover in the wake of the great Monaro snowfall of June 1946 (given the unofficial obs of -16 to -20 from Adamaniaby during that episode). It would be nice to have something at Jindabyne, but if a new AWS is put anywhere in the Snowies I'd rather see it in the Kiandra area. I'd expect a Jindabyne site to be moderated somewhat (compared with Cooma Airport) by the proximity of the lake and the slope on which the town lies. The unit itself sits on the hump just below the gear stick or on the passengers chair if no one is sitting there. It works very well and is really accurate. It also records the minimum and maximum temperatures reached, which is very handy. It recorded a minimum temperature of -6.1 on the Hume Hwy 1/2 hr out of Goulburn on the weekend (about 5:30am Saturday) That morning there was the heaviest frosts I have seen with all the puddles and horse troughs covered with 1cm+ of ice on the top. In the ACT on Sunday I went up to Corin Forest reserve and there was snow 3-4cm deep in places still left over from the front last Thur and Fri. Also a pond there was still completely frozen over at midday. The ice would have been up to 5cm thick - wasn't game to try walking over it though ! :-) Was a very good weekend. Can't wait for the next cold outbreak! Nope, you're reading it correctly! But a few things to note: - We're used to the Wyoming soundings, the BoM soundings are plotted differently, the BoM plot the maximum potential for which they believe will be achieved in the next 12 hours (see the grey line). So the BoM soundings will also appear to be better then Wyoming - That LI figure is not really representative of the instability throughout the vertical slice of that atmosphere - the 500mb level is particularly cold, but when you look at the area that is positively buouyant, it's not actually uniform. This will be something I'll be mentioning in my presentation at the ASWA AGM (Atmospheric Instability & Dynamics, and the use of Thunderstorm Indicies including the pro's & con's, and how they're derived). Well, at least that is what I'm currently aiming to do :) Hope to meet you at the AGM! -- Anthony Cornelius Queensland Coordinator of the Australian Severe Weather Association (ASWA) (07) 3390 4812 14 Kinsella St Belmont, Brisbane QLD, 4153 Please report severe thunderstorms on our Queensland severe thunderstorm reporting line on (07) 3390 4218 or by going to our homepage at http://www.severeweather.asn.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "Chris Daley" To: Subject: Re: aus-wx: radar Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 17:19:57 +1000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2919.6600 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Yep, I cant get onto the radar either.... Rain became heavier and heavier as I neared Nth Gong. Took a couple of pictures from home, then up Mt Ousley where there was drifts of hail before the top of the mountain. Three big accidents made traffic very slow. I ended up being stuck on the big dipper after a major accident, where hail to around 10mm fell, covering the road with up to an inch of hail. While I was stuck in stopped traffic the storm passed out to sea. I finally got to Bulli Tops lookout, where I had an absolutely magic view of the storm almost below me, and out to sea. I took a few shots with the shutter open, hopefully not too long, with some shots having up to 3-4 cg's in each frame. Again, I'll be mightily upset if they don't turn out like those from the snowfalls at Robertson last week. Anyway, I'll post a better chase report tomorrow from work, which will probably beat this message to the list. Jimmy will receive shots tomorrow from the digital camera, and later after scanning my 35mm photos. What a past week it has been. Looking forward to more unreal weather. It is fairly obvious now that sea breezes penetrate a lot further inland than I ever realised. Rod Aikman, Bendigo, Vic. Hi all In my study of the morning glory, I have come across a few papers regarding the inland penetration of sea breezes. These look at some observations and compare them with the results from numerical models. Unfortunately, in these papers there is no Bendigo specific study, but the case of the 'Goondiwindi breeze' may be applicable, which springs up on many summer evenings. Goondiwindi is located 315km inland from the central Queensland coast, latitude ~28S, and about 120km inland from the coast there is a 600m high ridge. The eastern side is steeper while the western side tapers off. The explanation given here was developed from the numerical modelling results of this sea breeze. During the day the sea breeze moves inland but stalls against the ridge where it loses its identity. Just after midday a sea breeze like disturbance develops in the lee of the ridge. So basically, you could think of it as the sea breeze 'jumping' up the ridge, but probably due to anabatic effects. This new sea breeze in the lee continues to develop through the afternoon and propagates down the hill and reaches Goondiwindi by ~2100 local time, where its speed of propagation is around 8m/s (~30km/h). A model run without the ridge present resulted in a weaker sea breeze which arrived over an hour later at Goondiwindi. So, the presence of the hill speeds up and intensifies the sea breeze. To confirm that the air arriving at Goodiwindi indeed originated from the sea, tracer particles were put into the model, and this showed that this air did originate from the sea. A study was also done on the Canberra sea breeze. In this case, observations were carried out in the 1940s during summer by following the sea breeze by car and/or plane. The sea breeze has been recorded past Canberra (114km from east coast), to Jugiong (191km inland) and Wagga Wagga (270km). The 'idealised' topography used in the model, shows the diving range rising up steeply on the eastern side to a height of ~600m in 50km (of which Canberra is just west of the peak) and then tapering off to the west. The times of arrival of the sea breeze at Canberra seems to be around 1700->1900. The limited model output shown in this paper seems to show a similar process that that explained above. In my modelling simulations of sea breezes, I have found that an assisting geostrophic flow (in this case an easterly), increases the depth of inflow into the sea breeze. Without this aiding geostrophic flow, for my case this inflow is just over 500m in depth. [I state 'my case' as the surface heating I used, which is for Cape York Peninsula, would be slightly higher than from the Canberra region, which would result in a more intense sea breeze.] With an aiding geostrophic flow of 5m/s (18km/h), the inflow increases to a depth of about 1km. Looking at the wind profiles taken from the observations taken at Canberra shows that inflow depths did indeed range from 300m -> ~800m depending on the direction of the geostrophic flow (smaller heights for opposing geostrophic flow). If the aiding flow is above ~10m/s then this tends to have adverse effects on the sea breeze head reducing the temperature contrast and velocity change that occurs at the 'front'. In another study, the Coorong-Renmark area was looked at in January 1959 and 1961. During 1961 a line of 9 stations aligned perpendicular to the coast and reaching 165km inland were manned. Here it was found that the sea breeze moves inland at increasing speed until 2200hr (local time) where deceleration occurs and it may even reach Mildura (310km inland). In fact propagation speeds of sea breezes are found to increase in speed after sunset which is believed due to the cessation of daytime convection. The distance the sea breeze is penetrates inland is thought to be primarily governed by the Coriolis force which is dependent on the rotation rate of Earth and the latitude. So, at lower latitudes, the sea breeze can propagate larger distances. In the morning glory case, the east coast sea breeze that develops on the eastern side of Cape York Peninsula travels around 400km from the east side through to the west side. However, there is one thing to note about the penetration of sea breezes inland. This is shown in the following study on the Kalgoorlie sea breeze, and to some extent in my morning glory simulations. There are occassions where the propagating sea breeze actually generates wave like disturbances at low levels which move ahead of the sea breeze even after it has 'died'. It is possible that observations may not be able to distinguish between the two cases, ie a bona-fide sea breeze, and these wave disturbances. At the moment, I'm not going to touch on these wave disturbances as this email is bloody well long enough :-p Data on the Kalgoorlie sea breeze was obtained by the person driving his car along the Esperance-Norseman-Kalgoorlie road and following this sea breeze. He found that in summer the sea breeze not infrequently penetrated as far as Kalgoorlie, which is a distance of 350km. It typically arrived around 2210->2335 (local time). However, numerical modelling showed that when parcels of air were tracked, any sea breeze air was lost after about 250km. The disturbance that continued was thus a wave and not a strict sea breeze. > > The thought of this phenomenon being a sea breeze is one that has also > crossed my mind in the past. Well, I did look at the trough on this morning's synopsis with some interest but I never though it would generate the storms we had in Wollongong this afternoon! When at about 2PM EST the sky filled with Stratus, I thought the chances of an afternoon thundery shower went out the window but soon the sky darkened and it was obvious that something was imminent. As the rain started and I heard my first rumble of thunder I decided to head out to Flagstaff Pt. (good view up and down the Illawarra coast line) to see what was happening. As I settled back with my Maccas sunday the escarpment slowly dissapeared behind the main column of precipitation which was nice but then the CGs that I was seeing turned blue! Hail!! I drove up the coast to Fairy Medow where I could see that the hail was just NW of where I was - by this time I was in torrential rain. I drove a few suburbs further North where I caught up with the center of the storm which was moving north along the escarpment at a fairly slow rate. By this time I was at Bellambi where jagged hail of about 7mm diametre mixed with very heavy rain was making visibility pretty ordinary. I pulled over and watched this for a few minutes and then kept going to keep up with the storm. The hail was staying on the ground briefly there, but closer to the coast I drove into 10cm drifts - lawns and roofs looking like scenes from the snow chase I had been on less than a week before! The rain had caused minor flooding, I drove through foot deep water accross the road at one stage. Damaging hail was reported from Corrimal, to the SW of where I was. To ice the cake I drove to Bellambi Beach and watched a second cell move north about 500m off the coast which gave me a great view of yet more CGs and quite a few CCs. I heard radio reports of a few bad accidents at the top of Mt Ousley which had caused traffic to be diverted so the storms took their toll. Not a bad weeks weather, I'm looking forward to more!
