So the BoM >soundings will also appear to be better then Wyoming Anthony thanks for your post and pointing out the (potentially very significant) difference between the actual observed LI (as shown in the Wyoming plots) and the expected LI in the BOM plot. As we all know the expected sometimes never eventuates.... (with conditions liable to change at both the surface and the mid-upper levels over the period between the observed sounding and the likely diurnal maximum temperature). For last Monday (1 August), the Wyoming (actual) figure for Williamtown at 00z was -0.4; whereas on the BOM plot it was shown as -5.2. I may have been a little more cautious in my posting to the list at seeing a -0.4 LI for 10.00am (although I would be very happy to see such a reading in Canberra anytime in the next few weeks!!) I also recognise the weakness inherent in using a single level (500mb) reference for determining overall instability - particularly if that level happens to be not very representative of the middle layers as a whole. Its a shame the BOM plots don't include a CAPE value as well - but I guess there is a trade-off between amount of information and speed of availability - and it is nice to have much earlier access than the Wyoming data. I also like the inclusion of the previous day's profile in the BOM plot - you can make a rapid assessment of changing conditions. [snip] > >Hope to meet you at the AGM! Sadly, I have overseas visitors arriving at the wrong time - tried to change their dates of arrival - so I probably won't be able to get to the AGM. Your talk sounds very interesting - will there be any material that can be provided to ASWA members after the AGM? How can it be >raining and snowing at the same time?? How come the rain doesn't >freeze?????? Hi Desley, As a Canberra-ite where the rain/snow combination is not unusual (personally I would prefer more snow, less rain if it is going to be cold anyway), I thought I would attempt an answer. The temperature at which snow turns to rain (or the other way around) is usually a couple of degrees above freezing - depending on humidity levels (the drier the air, the higher the temperature can be and still allow snow to fall as evaporation from the snowflake into a drier air cools and slows the melting of the snowflake). In very dry air, snow can fall at temperatures as high as +6 - this may have happened in the observed snow fall event at Uluru a couple of years ago. Dr David Jones and others on the list have posted the mathematical equations that assist in calculating the snow temperature for different levels of humidity. As snow falls into warmer levels of the atmosphere, the melting process is not instantaneous - but happens along a continuum until the melting is complete. As the outer levels of the snow flake melt a little, they become sticky (a bit like wet sand as opposed to dry sand) and will stick to other snow flakes (or anything else they touch). So at around +1 or +2 degrees, you often see very large snow flakes falling - they are in fact clumps of slightly melted snow flakes. Snow that reaches the surface at these slightly above freezing temperatures will often stick to everything from all sides (ie the under-surfaces of tree branches, letter boxes as well as the top surfaces) and this looks very pretty. Dry snow (below freezing) will just fall off a non-level surface rather than stick to it. As the snow flakes fall through progressively higher temperatures, the smaller flakes will melt first and become raindrops whilst the bigger flakes hang on longer. This is where you get the snow-rain mix (often the temp will be between 2-4 degrees). As the temperature rises further still, the mix becomes increasingly of rain rather than snow until eventually it is all liquid. The last remnants of melted snow (or conversely the first sign that rain is possibly going to turn into snow) is often seen on car windscreens as raindrops containing little soft balls of ice that melt within seconds of hitting the windscreen. It interesting to watch the transition process if there is precipitation and you are in a car which is gaining or losing altitude. A vertical change of 100-200m can result in a total change in precipitation type (and the appearance of the landscape). >>What is Sleet - if it isn't slushy rain???? In Australia (and the UK) sleet is that mix of slushy rain/partially melted snow. In the US, I think the term sleet applies to frozen rain pellets (ie rain falling from a warm mid-atmosphere into a very cold layer of air near the surface (cold enough to freeze the rain before hitting the surface). As the American land-mass at low elevations gets much colder than the Australian land-mass, this phenomenon is far more common in the US than in Australia (where it would be pretty unusual. Although I have occasionally observed this briefly happening in Canberra under very strong inversions, surface temps well below freezing and a weak - generally decaying - NW middle level cloudband moving above the inversion layer). >I have never seen snow falling and am fascinated by extreme cold >conditions...I was watching a show about Russia on TV last night and they >showed a Lake with water temperature at -2 degrees actually with mist all >over it, as the air temperature was -30 ........unbelievable......does that >mean that it was actually steam coming off the water as it was so much >warmer relatively than the air?????? This is a common winter occurrence over Lake Burley Griffin (the infamous Canberra fogs only too well known by air travellers!!) although the water temp would be around +5 and the air temps around -5 to -7. It is indeed steam with supercooled (ie temp below freezing) water droplets. Again, I have occasionally heard local reports of "snow" falling in very thick and deep fogs (up to 500m-1000m in vertical height) where the temps are well below freezing. Presumably in such conditions there may be some freezing of the supercooled droplets and enough bouyancy within this shallow layer to allow some very small crystals to grow to observable albeit small snowflake size. If some of the models are right - SE Aust should be in for some more interesting cold weather early-mid next week. Unfornately, it has been a while since we have had a classic summer sea-breeze/storm scenario. Last summer was pretty cool and there were NO storms. The summer before was good for storms (12 in January alone) but from memory the sea-breeze did not play a large role that year. I agree that when it happens, it is extremely pleasant to sit outside and watch the interaction of incoming sea-breeze and rapidly boiling congestus..!! As next summer approaches, I would recommend members of the list look at some of the satellite animations of the coastal regions during the afternoon and you can very clearly see the progress of the sea-breeze inland. In the tropical regions especially, by evening the sea-breeze boundary is often very well defined by a line of Cb (and then clear air back to the coast). The hourly animations on sites such as http://wwwghcc.msfc.nasa.gov/GOES/gms5ir.html (if it is working) or perhaps Nick Sykes' animation of GMS are the best to watch this process. I watched last Monday's Eye of the storm series on Ch 7 and also last night's Ch 9 A Current Affair which had a segment on the OK Tornado outbreak last year (apparently this was just new news to them... read a "gap filler") Firstly, Eye of the storm: Dear oh dear, I was appalled at this week's effort - what could have been a good segment on the Singleton severe storm was destroyed by out of context stock storm footage which they had the audacity to replay in relation to a U.S.A. Great plains event later in the show! And then the C.A. segment last night with tornado footage of various events of dubious vintage arbitrarily described as the most severe tornado ever filmed with "confirmed" wind speeds in excess of 500kph.(!!??) In fact from footage I have seen of the actual F5 (thanks Rals!!!!), none shown were of the actual beast itself and neither has any wind speed been confirmed - merely estimated. As an aside (off topic) I notice that in the Ch 7 captions advertising forthcoming news events re Olympic Torch relay Tuesday they referred to Tassie as "TASMAINIA" and this follows an event a few weeks ago on the 6 O'clock News/Weather where their caption re gale warning read "GAILS" !!! Last night showed a classic situation with cold air coming up from the south & warm air advection from the NW to the east of the system at the 850hPa level, and a strengthening jet packing up behind it at 300hPa. The whole system has been tilting on its axis towards the NE & the low pressure system has slowly headed north and has only just made landfall at the head of the Bight. It works on the fact that colder air is denser therefore 500mb thickness is less with cold air. For example the statement 540 thickness is actually saying that 500mb lays at 5400m above the surface. In warmer atmospheres it may be 5700m or more.
