(If there are any others out there - Speak Up!) Great weather recently over the western regions of both North and South Islands but nothing here in good old Christchurch. It's been fine here throughout that period even with the dramatic drop/rise in air pressure associated with that trough. Dunedin got some stormy weather yesterday, at Carisbrook a strong southerly gust blew down one of the uprights just before kick-off of the Waikato/Otago clash. If that system had of moved towards us instead of moving more eastwards, we may of been in for some weather. We are approaching ONE WHOLE YEAR without a thunderstorm, so hopefully a good, juicy storm is just around the corner!!! Did you read the report of the lightning striking that Norfolk pine in Auckland? Must of been spectacular! I missed the TV3 news item on it. I think its amusing what > Leslie terms as "weak" and what I/we would consider weak here. I was out First, please understand that the value of "120 mph" was essentially off the top of my head, if you will. "Weak" tornadoes are classified as F0 and F1. Once again, this is a damage scale and not a wind speed scale. (I think we can all recite that in our sleep! ) So much is dependent on the structural integrity of that which was damaged, if indeed, there are structures to be damaged. If one looks at the *estimated* wind speeds to inflict F1 damage, it is less than about 113 mph. Having said this, my point was that here in the states we virtually NEVER hear the term "mini" used in relation to tornadoes. Those words just are not juxtaposed! There are a couple videos that come to my mind where in one sense the term "mini" might be thought to apply. In both those, there is actual condensation that reaches the ground but it is so slender that it would appear "I could put my arms around it!" Needless to say, my arms would probably not weather the storm very well. I say that because one of these same very slender tornadoes could be seen to uproot trees and send them skyward as if they were rockets. Seeing that, I would never call that a "mini". But, it would seem that no matter the intensity of tornadoes in Australia, the press will very nearly always view these as "minies". You have "fallen and you will never again get up". The press must carefully prevent that from happening! LOL Les ************************ Leslie R. I think a key forecast parameter is __the scale__ of the phenomenon you want to forecast. Current operational Doppler radars such as the WSR-88D have an along-beam resolution of 250 metres and an azimuthal resolution of ~0.92 degrees (values courtesy of Les Lemon, thanks). That pulse width resolves a supercell adequately, but it generally (unless the radar is very close to a bigger specimen!) wouldn't resolve a rapidly growing cumulus congestus with a waterspout hanging down from its base. Another key forecast parameter is public interest (i.e. funding). In the States that are United tornadoes do enough damage to be interesting to those folks who only look at numbers if they are preceded by a dollar sign. Waterspouts are too benign and occur at the wrong location (over water) for that equation. Wait until a strong waterspout plows through the right yacht harbo(u)r one fine day... I believe that sufficient effort could lead to waterspout forecasting. The issue for operational forecasters is the CONTINUOUS scan of a LARGE AREA at very HIGH RESOLUTION. The resolution is available - check out the dust devil radar images taken by Howie Bluestein with the 3 mm UMass radar: http://abyss.ecs.umass.edu/tornado/may-25-99.html The trick for ultra short-term prediction is, as I said, to scan the right area continuously *before* the occurence of the dust devil. > No offence to anybody by this but > it just seems awfully convenient to label weather phenomenon such as > landspouts, which main mechanism is convection, as a tornado when clearly a > tornado from a Cb is spawned from many, more complicated processes and > mechanisms, some very different to that of just convection. I would > appreciate your input/comments on this matter. Discussions on DEFINITIONS usually open up a can of worms as definitions (by definition) are based on arbitrary choices. Try and define "warm" and "cold", for example. No matter how you do it, there will be someone who will say "that's not cold" or "that's not warm." It's the nature of definitions. I think we don't know enough about the physics of rapidly rotating air in the real atmosphere to _cleanly_ classify the observed spectrum. So, you can chose to classify the spectrum in a somewhat more dirty manner (as practised) or you play it very conservatively and refrain from any classification and call them all "vortices". Even then you would have to outline at what temporal/spatial scale rotating air is called a vortex. After that you would have to define what "rotating air" is and so on. They were fairly short-lived though. Kent Town recorded nearly 14mm to 5:30am this morning. Also a report of a thunderstorm at Port Lincoln. Today is looking interesting with a few showers this morning and possible squalls to 25knots. I suppose this is to do with the unstable airstream to our south. Have learnt not to get my hopes up over such airstreams as often they only bring very brief showers here. Sometimes when days are forecast to have widepread showers, whole slabs of the day can go without any rain from these airstreams. Although there are the odd occasions of a lasting heavy one. I suppose I just have to be patient. Unstable north-west airstreams can be much better in my view. And especially any unstable airstream in the warmer months. Also thanks for the opinion on when we could get some thunderstorms. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "MSC - Jane ONeill" To: "Aussie Weather" Subject: aus-wx: WEATHER:Hail in Melbourne Date: Tue, 15 Aug 2000 08:06:50 +1000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook IMO, Build 9.0.2416 (9.0.2910.0) Importance: Normal Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Morning all, Hail has just been reported in Thornbury & Rosanna, with 40-100mm/hr in Abbotsford & Kew as a line of heavy showers with accompanying gust front (which looked pretty impressive) moved up from the Werribbee area across the city & surrounds over the past half hour. Hey again pples,

I don't think it has ben analysed or if it will be but I think there may be a low formed/developing SE of Port Phillip Heads heading ENE.  It can been seen on Melbourne Broad radar currently sitting S of Westernport Bay.

Very cold air is crossing Victoria this evening and tonight and we should see snowfalls down to about 500m tonight (Mt Dandenong, Ballarat, and maybe Kinglake) and flurries possible to lower levels.  Hail is also likely with plenty of large cold air showers and no doubt storms moving over the state as we speak.  I wouldn't be surprised to see 30cm of snow on the alps tonight too which is great news for the skiiers.

Also we have had hardly any intense low pressure systems crossing near the coast compared with average years as well. This could have had an effect on the number of severe weather events we have had??? Does anybody in Adelaide remember last year during spring when a number of heat troughs developed in Western Australia and moved into South Australia causing frequent bursts of rain sometimes very light and some thunderstorms. It would be good if a repeat of that happened, or something similar happened this year. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Originating-IP: [203.21.241.125] From: "Rod Aikman" To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: aus-wx: Hail in Bendigo too Date: Tue, 15 Aug 2000 21:46:35 EST X-OriginalArrivalTime: 15 Aug 2000 11:46:35.0351 (UTC) FILETIME=[76CBAE70:01C006AE] Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi everyone, Some very nice cold air Cbs here this afternoon, one at around 16:00 produced a nice covering of hail. The stones were up to 8mm diameter and accumulated into piles against walls etc. My wife informed me that at the University, located in Flora Hill, lawns were completely covered in places, and there were still hailstones piled on the top of the car boot when she arrived home just after 17:00. The clouds were glaciated down to very low levels, with snow streaks obscuring views of the main Cbs. Temperature had fallen to 4.2 deg by 18:00.
