Good for the ski-fields which haven't had much snow, really, since the dumps in early June. Not really that cold. Temp hovering around the 10oC mark all day and night. The easiest is to go to http://152.80.49.210/PUBLIC/WXMAP/GLOBAL/ from there go to either the NGP or AVN models for Australia, the data you need to look at is the 300hpa and isotachs. For decent storms I like to see a jet with a nice north south bend, not a flat west-east jet. For example look at the forecast for Monday 12Z and you will see the jet coming up from the deep south to near the WA/SA border then skirting the bight before dropping towards Tasmania. You can bet a low will form in the area semi-enclosed by the jet. This situation also tends to drag up cold air in the middle / upper layers, aiding storms, given good surface conditions ( mositure, relative warmth ). You can also go to http://sgi62.wwb.noaa.gov:8080/cgi-bin/disp_avn.sh On the first page select the latest dataset, leave the rest the same. Click on NEXT PAGE. On this next page select the data you require, for example WINDS ( Knots ), then select the level, 1000 = surface, 500 middle layers, 200 upper. Then select the date you require and geographic location. With this model you can quickly get an idea of whether winds turn with height, getting close to a 180 degree rotation and a decent strength such as NE at surface to SW at 300 will be ideal for supercell development. Of course all this is a waste at Darwin as jet streams are rarely strong in your neck of the woods. But the middle layer winds may give you hint as to what steering the storms may take, or to whether that nice cyclone is going to have its top sheared off. A strong to vigorous cold front and associated low pressure system are meant to pass over and near the south of South Australia early this coming week. Forecast for Adelaide from the Bureau of Meteorology: Windy with rain developing on Monday (fairly good chance of thunderstorms), Windy and rain periods on Tuesday(this depends on continual development of the low near south of SA) and showers on Wednesday. Unusual to see rain areas over two days in Adelaide. If the scenario works out it is quite likely there could be flooding in South Australia during this period depending on moisture levels. Sounds good for the SE of the country as well. I am really hoping all of this works out and we see a lot of rain here in Adelaide. I'd like to hear from any other people in Adelaide or other places about what they think this sytem will produce. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: wbc at ozemail.com.au (Laurier Williams) To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: SLIGHTLY OFFTOPIC All about tornado's Date: Sat, 19 Aug 2000 07:32:39 GMT X-Mailer: Forte Agent 1.5/32.452 X-MIME-Autoconverted: from quoted-printable to 8bit by europe.std.com id EAA26474 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com On Thu, 17 Aug 2000 17:20:59 +0100, "Les Crossan" wrote: >Starting with the name - TORNADOES (: > The Macquarie Dictionary, which is the sole arbiter of "accepted" Australian English, lists both tornadoes and tornados as acceptable plurals, with the preference given to tornadoes. The first use of the word appears to have been by 16th century spanish mariners to describe the squally downdraft at the leading edge of thunderstorms in western Africa and the adjacent tropical Atlantic. They appear to have corrupted the word tornado from a blend of the spanish words tornar, to turn, and tronada, a thunderstorm, which in turn comes from the spanish tronar, to thunder, which in turn derives from the latin tonare. So, the -dos ending is for the purists that would like to maintain the correct plural of the spanish derivation, while the -does follows the anglicisation principal of inserting an e before the s in words ending in o. The UK Met Office Meteorological Glossary takes the -does plural spelling. In view of the previous discussion on the definition of a tornado, the Macquarie Dictionary's definition is worth noting: A violent whirlwind of small radius, advancing over the land in which winds of destructive force circulate round a centre. It is characterised by strong ascending currents and is generally made visible by a funnel-shaped cloud.
