I had committed to a family picnic ( hidden agenda - storm chase ) so I decided to head south. At Kiama 11.00am and the wind turned cooler SW and the sun came out, a dummy could pretty much tell that the trough line had passed through and that activity was over for the day. I headed south to Jervis Bay where around 3pm the wind was now South. Some weakish showers had developed from the strato-cu, actually there was some weak convection too. Nothing compared to the towering Cb's about 150-200km offshore. On the way home the S wind had lifted a weak Cb over Mount Saddleback near Kiama, this glaciated at a very low level and gave the smallest hail I have seen for many years at Gerringong. Only a few larger cumulus gave that nice developing look to them, but even those did not last long. However, further south from my location, low topped storms developed within about 50km from the coast, then developed quite a bit more as they neared and crossed it, probably reaching 9-10km in height. From Coffs Harbour to south of Evans Head (check Grafton local radar for locations) it was quite active from about 1.30pm onwards. I went out for some obs and saw some interesting lowerings on a fairly large cell. A line of congestus persisted on an E-W line from this and edged a little further N later in the afternoon. This ended up giving a very active lightning show from 6pm well into the evening as the cells continued to the distant east. Looking at the radar and you can clearly see three or four rainbands but as the first one crossed the coast it quickly disappeared. It seems fairly evident that we are looking at a major precipitation event, although exactly where the heaviest precipitation will happen is less clear (the GASP precip progs have the heaviest persistent falls through southern Victoria, but eastern Tasmania looks a more likely prospect to me). It certainly has the potential to be a flood situation because the system is so slow-moving. The system doesn't look as cold now as it did a couple of days ago, with most models going for thicknesses around 536-540 (although they do push those levels a long way north). This wouldn't be enough for major low-level snowfalls, but it should be enough for most or all of the precipitation at ski-resort elevation to fall as snow. Given the amount of precipitation expected this could mean some very large snow accumulations indeed, especially in Victoria. As an aside, the snow depth at Spencers Creek last Thursday was 233cm. This is around a once in 5-10 years event at this time of year. It's not impossible that it could get close to (or beyond) 300 by the end of this week. 300 has only been reached four times (1964, 1968, 1981 and 1992), although the season that this season most resembles for sustained heavy snow cover - 1960 - never quite made it to 300. Oddly enough, the site has been below 0 on six occasions in May, June and September (with a record of -1.1 on 27 June 1946), but never previously in July or August. The airport has something of an anomalous warming trend, presumably due to urbanisation, so this would be quite a significant record if it is broken. After a lot of waiting around at home trying to make up my mind as to go chasing or not (mostly because of wanting to be home to watch the Broncos match) just before midday I decided to head towards a favourite hill of mine 10km north of Beaudesert. There were lots of cumulus clouds to the SW and I was hoping they were hiding some better action. At the time, there was a fairly dry NW'ly wind reaching 15-18kn at times and the temp was about 26C. Shortly after, I went on to Beaudesert, then a clearing with about 5km south with pretty good views. I stayed there for about 30mins, hoping that the large cu closely to my SW (with mid level anvils over me) would start to precipitate and build. Better looking towers were observed to my north and particularly NNE. After a while it became apparent that there was a heap more moisture towards Brisbane and I was in the wrong spot. Anthony and I traded phone calls and decided to meet in Beaudesert to discuss our options. On the way, I received a phone call from my girlfriend to say there were BIG drops at our place and I could hear it get heavier as I talked to her. Don't you hate that? I shouldn't have gone anywhere! In Beaudesert, Anthony and I both agreed that the only option was heading north, so we did. The TCu towers and possible Cb to the north seemed to be developing quite nicely. On the way, I caught glimpses of this area of action which had become a small area of Cb. In fact, there was a huge smoke plume under them and I can safely say that was the first PYROCUMULONIMBUS I had ever seen. However, because we were on the Mt Lindsay Highway, it was very difficult to turn off, so no photos/video were taken. At one point, this pyro Cb looking quite impressive. Just before 3pm we reached a small lookout near my place, noticing all the roads were wet and all the good stuff had cleared! In fact, the showers/storms had dispersed into nothing off the coast. For me it was a chase of a little over 100km and I never got one raindrop on my windscreen, however I did see my first Pyro Cb so it wasn't all bad. The shower that occurred here dropped 3mm which I think was the best report in all of SE Qld. *Sigh* Obviously it could have been much better, but it could have been worse as well. Hey, it's only August! Hopefully something on Wednesday. Regards James Chambers Logan City PS: Another good thing was watching most of the Broncos V Parra match. Great win! I spent the day in Grafton where 2 storm systems were observed about an hour apart ( nice wall cloud on the 2nd). Both looked far better developed to the south and I've heard that Many places between Coffs an Grafton had spectacular lightning with many ground strikes and heaps of small hail. It hailed briefly at the soccer trials where I was at 3pm then that was the end of the action. My daughter was travelling south from Coffs at about 1:30pm via motorbike and she and her boyfriend had to head to the servo at Boambee firstly to get shelter from the amazing cg lightning and then to avoid the hail. Evidently a car and trailer under a carport nearby got frazzled in a strike - local news this morning. The storms passed along the mountain range from Dorrigo missing the Bellinger Valley where I live.
