Hi All

Just phoned Doug at the caravan park, Guyra.  He said they had snow last night,  most of it melted this morning, but at the time I rang him (10:00am) it was snowing, he can't see the highway.   It is setteling on the ground and the flakes are large.  Just rang the Ampol, snowing there too ( about 10:08)  They are in the north of the town.  The highway was closed last night, and the lady recons the roads will be closed in an hour.  She said it was white outside.  I wish I was there.

The LI is evaluated by evaluating how a parcel of air will ascend through the atmosphere. Essentially just the theoretical air parcel plot line. You then look at the temperature of the theoretical air parcel line compared with the 500mb ELR (environmental lapse rate). Have a look at: http://www-das.uwyo.edu/cgi-bin/sounding?OUTPUT=GIF&TYPE=SKEWT&HOUR=0&DAY=28&MONTH=1&YEAR=1998&STATION=RIW&au.x=239&au.y=124 The red line is the theoretical air parcel plot line and is essentially just how a parcel of air will ascend into the atmosphere if given the chance to. The right black line is the temperature line (ELR), and the left black line is the DP. To read temperatures off, just look at the dark blue diagonal lines and what reading they give. On the above skew-t, the 500mb ELR is about -8.5C, and if a parcel of air was allowed to rise to the 500mb level, it'd be -2C. The LI is: 500T - 500 theoretical air parcel plot line LI = -8.5C - -2C LI = -6.5C which is the value given on the right hand side. So if the LI is negative, it means that at the 500mb level, the atmosphere is unstable. The BoM lists: 0 to -2: Thunderstorms probable -2 to -4: Severe thunderstorms possible -4 and below: Severe thunderstorms probable, tornadoes possible. There are a myriad of different intepretations, but I think that it's a load of kidney beans to be honest. The LI only evaluates one level out of an infinite number of levels in the atmosphere! Hence, it's telling you that one level is unstable/stable. Because there's so much more then just the 500mb being unstable/stable - I tend to think the LI is flawed. It is however, a general indicator and can be useful in that way. Remember though: - Storms may not need to reach the 500mb level (ie in winter) - Strong updrafts below a temporarily stable layer at 500mb can still penetrate - Again - you can't evaluate the entire atmosphere using just one level! Which is what the LI is attempting to do (ie, because 500mb is unstable, the rest of the atmosphere is probably stable). - Tornadoes can occur in physical environments where the LI is +3, and potentially higher - You can get clear skies with LI's of -15C or below (ie, strong subsidence from upper level high/ridge, and also you can often have very strong capping). I did a presentation on this and other indicies at the ASWA AGM down in Sydney - Jane wants to put it up on MSC, however I have to make a few modifications first and then I'll send her the file and we'll work out some way of putting it up... I know this is only brief, but hopefully it gives you a starting point! Anthony Cornelius David Findlay wrote: > > Thanks, I've found that. This is short of the August record of 37.0, but it is the third-earliest date on record for the first 35-degree day of 'spring' (Darwin Airport has never reached 35 in either June or July), following 14 August 1969 and 19 August 1958. The dewpoint at 1500 yesterday was 5, about 10 degrees below the climatological normal, which might explain a bit. It's a while since we've seen a chart with a high-pressure centre in the vicinity of Mt. Isa (which managed an extreme of its own this morning with a minimum of -1, supposedly an August record, but the minima there have fallen markedly over the last couple of years which makes me wonder about the site). And, much to the disappointment of the world's headline writers, Hurricane Debby seems to have fallen to pieces over Cuba, just as it seemed to have been setting course in the vague general direction of Texas. (For the benefit of younger readers, 'Debbie Does Dallas' was a well-known X-rated movie of, I believe, 1970's vintage). Have talked today with a bloke who remembers watching two violent storms colliding. His words were: Two storms approached each other from the south and west, both very, very dark. When they met it's just as if the black stuff just fell to the ground. He said he normally doesn't worry about this stuff but what he saw happen was just the most awesome things he's ever seen. Just as if the two storms when they met just fell to the ground. Black all the way to the ground. This bit really intrigues me though. Another eye witness to the event stated that the hail which was in his words much bigger than cricket balls was breaking up "before" it hit the ground into smaller parts and what hit the ground was very jagged edged hail. ............... Curiosities: * storms moving towards each other - I've read about it & I've seen it....why does it happen? * hail breaking up *before* it reaches the ground? Seems that the seasons are turning with the Heat Lows starting to now appear on models / charts in the great storm engine - the Kimberley. The Weather Co. rain prognosis charts for day 5 / day 6 indicate some showers for the top end - anyone know what models TWC use? Bring on the storm season!
