But Seriously, I would have thought the radar system would cost around $6-10 million, considering many of the parts for it would have come from overseas and the relative dearness of some electronic components here. Oh well, lets hope in the future the rest of Australia can be included in the Doppler network. The small low continues to approach Victoria although is rather feeble,The airmass across southern Victoria is conditionally unstable and there is the possibility of a few storms not only in the West of the state but also over the central and west Gippsland districts and along the ranges, The cloud mass well south of Tasmania continues to move westward under the low near Southwest Vic:,however this unusual motion may be due to the possible development of a low in the western Bight along the approaching rather large cold front now west of the Bight area all worth watching. regards Clyve H. ----- Original Message ----- From: MSC - Jane ONeill To: Aussie-wx Sent: Sunday, August 27, 2000 10:08 AM Subject: aus-wx: IMAGES: Victoria & SA > Morning all, > > Did the eastern states survive this crazy change to daylight > savings????? Les Lemon will know more about this than me, but it has been found that insect swarms tend to be concentrated along atmospheric boundaries - eg seabreeze fronts, gust fronts etc. This can be extremely useful if there is no other obvious means of detection, for example a cloud free mesoscale boundary of some type - in Australia we have pretty much Buckley's chance of detecting them given our rather sparse obs network. Recent research IMO is revealing an increasing awareness of the importance of such boundaries to thunderstorm evolution and tornadogenesis. I just subscribed last weekend, a day before leaving for Tasmania (gee, I ipck a good time to get on a new list! :) ). Thought I'd post a brief introduction, and then a few notes on the weather encountered. What brought me here was meeting an online aquaintance for the first time at a party last weekend. Turns out he's a storm chaser, so we had a long conversation about the weather (which isn't hard to do in Melbourne! :) ), and he pointed me to the ASWA web site. I'm in Melbourne and I've been interested in weather as long as I can remember. As a kid, I used to watch the weather report and take daily rainfall readings for 10 years (basically until I left home) and took note of interesting weather patterns. My other major interests though are amateur radio and the Internet (actually, these 3 aren't a bad mix :) ). I also had the pleasure of experiencing the recent storm over the north-west suburbs (the tornado was within 2km of here), an event worth turning the TV off for. :-) This last week, I've been in Tasmania on holidays, and missed whatever happened in Melbourne with the system that's been passing through (and which looked _very_ unusual to me), but anyway, what I've been having for the past week or so: Monday Aug 21 (Melbourne to Devonport via sea) - Boarded the Spirit of Tasmania in overcast conditions. Weather remained overcast for the rest of the evening. Seas were calm inside the bay and only around 0.5m in Bass Strait, with a smooth ride for the whole night. Apparently, the following southbound trip on the Wednesday night, which I almost wound up on was rather rough and caused some engine damage and 1 hour's delay. Tuesday Aug 22 (Devonport - Hobart via Pt Arthur). Arrived in Devonport in almost overcast conditions which persisted until around Launceston, where the weather changed to a showery pattern. Snow was observed on one peak to the SE of Launceston. The showers intensified as we moved south towards Hobart, with the classic "snowy" characteristic. From vantage points in Pt Arthur, could see showers moving westwards. The HF radio was setup on 7.085 MHz for comms back to Melbourne. No lightning static was heard during the daylight hours. Wed August 23 (Hobart to Bronte Park, Central Tas). Showers from the east persisted over Hobart with short sunny breaks in between. Snow was observed on Mt Wellington down to about 500m. Left Hobart for Bronte Part around 1PM, the showers becoming less frequent with long sunny breaks between New Norfolk and Ouse, then conditions became overcase with frequent light showers. No further snow was sighted. Overnight, the weather remained showery with drizzle in between. Radio conditions were again quiet until late in the afternoon on 7.085 MHz, but by 8PM, during a sked with Melbourne on 3.565 MHz, lightning static was so severe that communication was almost impossible (where was that lightning striking?). After the sked, setup again for 7 MHz for the next day, and noticed severe static there as well. Thurs August 24 (Bronte Park to Queenstown). Left early in the morning for Queenstown in persistent drizzle and a stiff easterly. Drizzle persisted until the western edge of the National Park, about 30km east of Queenstown. From there and for the rest of the day, conditions were fine and overcast with a light wind. Snow was observed on several peaks over 1000m. Radio conditions were again quiet during the day with severe lightning static on 7 MHz after dark. Saw reports on the news of record snowfalls on the Tasmanian ski resort, which caused problems and stranded many people. Friday August 25 (Queenstown to Boat Harbour). Basically, fine and sunny all day for the run north. Again, snow observed on several peaks over 1000m. At 4PM, after arrival at Boat Harbour on the north coast, a cloud mass came over from the southeast and it rained heavily over a wide area for about 90 minutes. By 7PM, the cloud had cleared and didn't return. Radio conditions were quiet during the day and only mild static at night. Saturday August 26 (Boat Harbour to Devonport to Melbourne). Fine and sunny, was rather warm inside the car, and only a light breeze from the south outside. Radio conditions to 1PM were quiet (shutdown after 1PM). Boarded the ferry at 2PM and departed Devonport at 4PM. Conditions remained fine and clear until well into the night. Snow was visible on mountains to the south. It appeared there were significant snowfalls in the mountains south of Devonport during the previous 4 or 5 days. Sunday August 27 (Arrival in Melbourne). Woke up at 3:20 (2:20 standard time) as the Spirit of Tasmania entered the Port Phillip Heads. Sky was overcast by this time, and remained so until 7AM. Anyway, that's my lot for now. Skimming the old messages, it seems I may have missed some interesting stuff though. I'll probably lurk unless something really interesting (like another tornado, perhaps? :) ) happens... Recent research IMO is revealing an increasing > awareness of the importance of such boundaries to thunderstorm evolution > and tornadogenesis. Yes, you are quit right. Water has a dielectric constant near unity which means it is a rather good conductor and it is an excellent reflector. Knowing that biological targets, sometimes referred to as "atmospheric plankton", are 90%+ water, they are good reflectors. Birds, are of course, equally good but much larger targets. Both greatly augment the detection of boundaries. These boundaries are linear regions of atmospheric convergence and and as such bring insects along. Where there are insects there are often feeding birds. When we first began using NEXRAD and discovering all it could do, I called it "A New Window on the Atmosphere" because we were illuminating so much that had never before been "seen". We can, indeed, detect all kinds of boundaries (even "river" breezes). But now etymologists and ornithologists are using the radar to study these biological targets. Moreover, I am now working on an algorithm for NEXRAD weather radar that will automatically detect birds and alert aircraft pilots for the purpose of avoiding aircraft-bird collisions. In a similar manner, I believe the radar can be used to deliver insecticides while swarms of locusts are still airborne and before they land to devour crops. Additionally, we can easily detect fires and smoke plumes from those fires and volcanic eruptions. Don Burgess and myself examined the radar returns after the fact from the bombing in Oklahoma City, and found that the Oklahoma City radar did indeed, detect the explosion. Apart from that, some radar's like NEXRAD can also detect what is called "Bragg Scattering" which is created by refractive index gradients. Using that, we can detect atmospheric inversions, cloudless convective currents, some clouds, and other atmospheric phenomena. We are learning more and more about the applications of the newer, low noise, and high power radars. So, the bottom line, depending on the sensitivity of the radar, the transmitted power, low system noise levels, and other factors, it can be used for a wide variety of applications. You've gotta be kidding!!! - I'm going storm chasing" chase. Fortunately Lu is well aware that if there are congesting anythings within 400kms, it's absolutely impossible to keep me in one place - so she gave up and wished me luck. Andrew McDonald found me in Kew - I had been wandering slowly westward after this morning's indicators had made it impossible for me to stay home. I ended up west of Bacchus Mash on the Western Highway with great views. There were anvils to the NW, W & through S, but by far the strongest was the one to the S - it had a very strong updraft and a cumuliform anvil - so we had a case of 'chaser chasing' resulting in 'chaser convergence' at a petrol station 60kms later (I came from the west & he came from the east - and I think he drove faster than me - or stopped for fewer photos). We found ourselves a viewing spot west of Geelong which allowed us to see from the W right round to the NE & stayed there for an hour & a half watching cold Cbs, lowerings, rain shafts, anvils, updrafts, listening to lightning on the radio (but not seeing it) until Andrew decided that he had an appointment with the trains in Kyneton & we parted. I continued following one of the cells and was rewarded with a solid 40-100mm/hr shower, water over the road & significant runoff. All in all a very pleasant way of spending an afternoon and early evening....maybe daylight savings wasn't so bad after all .....a few pics can be seen at http://www.stormchasers.au.com/27_08_00.htm Thanks to all those who gave us radar updates through the afternoon - trying to find anyone at home today was virtually impossible - everyone seemed to be in a different state or were themselves out chasing. I had my eye on this one from Kiama. Very high based, wind was light east early afternoon but changed to moderate west when these weak Cu moved through. Glaciation occurred at very low levels again.

Drove south to Gerringong out of curiosity, there is one Cb tower so far SE that only the top half is above the ocean horizon. There is also two weaker cells off say Batemans Bay, but looked to be rapidly decaying.

Hi all,
