Big Temp Range too, 0C..30C indicating very dry air, 22% RH around midday. My readings at Mt. Crosby were 7C..26C at the house and 2.5C to 30.5C at the bottom of the drive (14C and 9.5C respectively at 11:00pm). Tomorrow Ipswich forecast is 30C again with possible afternoon storm (bring it on - but I am not hopeful, the air is way too dry). Now here's a curious thing... I have noticed the last 3 days, that strong Westerleys have been forecast 25 to 30KN, and sure enough, the last two days it has howled and today it was fresh at times. But... The winds peaked at around 2:00pm dying away to dead calm at night, only to crank up around 10:00am again. Why is this so I wondered... as I had initially expected the opposite, with the midday land/sea differential acting to inhibit the Westerly, if not actually cause an Easterly sea breeze. Observation of cloud movement showed mid level cloud scudding across the sky at pretty much the same speed irrespective of surface wind velocity. My conclusion is that at night, cooling at the surface produces a dense stable layer, and the westerlies deflect over the top of it. Daytime heating at the surface causes the air to rise to be replaced by the westerly stream.... Any advance on this? John. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: tlang at freeway.apana.org.au (Tony Langdon) Date: 28 Aug 00 00:18:50 +1000 Subject: Re: aus-wx: VANTAGE POINTS DATABASE / WEATHER:Melbourne Organization: Fidonet: Freeway Usenet <=> FTN gateway To: aussie-weather at world.std.com X-MDaemon-Deliver-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hello Chris. 27 Aug 00 16:13, you wrote to All: >> & the plane spotters were all out at the end of the runway with >> their thermoses. Altitude 1067m, and on a north/south ridge that frequently marks the boundary of westerly and easterly weather. Temperatures are usually 8 degrees or so cooler than Sydney, we get strong winds and snow, which has led unsympathetic people to christen the town "Bleakheath", or to remove the first and last letters to be known as "Lackheat". HEy everyone

It was nice and sunny here at about 9:30am and then very dark cloud cover came over. It lightly started raining before it pouring down. Then then thunder came with a very close strike to here at Blaxland. It seemed to lighten up before the hail came with that ever familiar tink sound. The hail was only around for a few minutes and wasn't very big, about pea size, no bigger. Matt smith said he ws gettin outflow winds at black town with it beginning to rain there.
Anyway, a good way to start the day!

Have taken a couple of digital pictures of the steam stacks, and some low topped Cu travelling out to sea. It appears to be a fair bit warmer then the Brisbane AP - the AP was 23C y'day, the CBD 26C. The CBD has had quite a few marked temps in the mid 20's over the past month, where as if my memory serves me correctly, the AP was 2-4C cooler! One of the main problems I have with it though, is that the media are reporting the Brisbane CBD temperatures, but are using the Brisbane AP averages!!! So of course, we're getting temperatures "above average" nearly all the time during the day. I have a feeling that Brisbane could very well register a nice 40+ on the new site if we get a few very hot days (eg, Jan 21/22 this year) - and potentially see a min around the 30C in very hot and humid conditions. In regards to the wind calming at night - I've noticed this happen for many years, the winds tend to be a lot calmer at night (at least, where I am), then during the day. Especially westerly winds! I've never been able to explain it. Perhaps the uneven surface heating during the day plays a part in it. But I do like your theory in regards to a thin stable layer with a very large inversion just above the surface... DP's have dropped to around 2-3C, which is unfortunate, as the MLC has cleared a little and it's 24.3C here at the moment. Had DP's been even in the low double figures, the atmosphere would have been quite conditionally unstable...but alas, it does not look to be. Other things to note - SRH for Brisbane today is a nice 440 - although directional shear at the time of the soundings was poor, the 850mb was an unheard of 60kn!!! I've never seen it that strong for Brisbane before!!! Although I imagine the southern states would get that occassionally. If we had a NE'ly, and moisture...and well, need I say we'd be hearing about a mini-tornado outbreak in Brisbane :) The upper levels are very cold, -20C at 500mb, it does warm up a bit with an inversion at 450mb. 300mb is -39C which is nothing special - but 500mb temps of -20C and below for us are quite impressive IMO. - Anthony Cornelius Queensland Coordinator of the Australian Severe Weather Association (ASWA) (07) 3390 4812 14 Kinsella St Belmont, Brisbane QLD, 4153 Please report severe thunderstorms on our Queensland severe thunderstorm reporting line on (07) 3390 4218 or by going to our homepage at http://www.severeweather.asn.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "Anthony Spierings" To: Subject: aus-wx: BNE : UFO Clouds Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 12:36:25 +1000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook 8.5, Build 4.71.2173.0 Importance: Normal Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com I saw an interesting cloud formation on Brisbane on Saturday about 1 PM local. As luck would have it, it was when I was driving down to the photo lab to get some film developed (ie, no film in the camera). The cloud’s shape (3 of them), for want of a better word, was like a UFO from the movie Independence Day. There was a rather dry westerly blowing. Overhead there was cumulus mediocris, which seem to disappear as they went over Morton Bay. At the point the cumulus ended there where a number of clouds that looked like altocumulus lenticularis (but not quite). Was the cumulus being chopped by dry winds top and bottom giving them this shape? Did any other locals notice similar clouds? It was also interesting to observe the smoke patterns at sunset on Tuesday last week. I was on the train going home around sunset. Out over Morton Bay one could see the smoke from the local bushfires around south Brisbane. The smoke was clearly moving up and down in air waves as it was pushed out to sea. The highest diurnal range on record in district 40 (roughly speaking, SE Queensland south of Gympie and east of the Darling Downs escarpment) is 32.9 (31.4/-1.5) on 16 September 1991 at Nanango. Nambour (34.3/2.2) and Imbil (33.7/2.6) also a range over 30 that day. Amberley's record is 30.2 (30.2/0.0) on 29 September 1994, and the August record is 30.7 (33.5/2.8) on 27 August 1970 at Brian Pastures. There are a total of 7 days in the record with a diurnal range > 30 somewhere in district 40, all of them in September except for the abovementioned one in August and one in November. The largest diurnal ranges in Australia are recorded in the Eyre Peninsula region of South Australia, with the record of 35.0 shared by Ceduna (39.6/4.6) and Kyancutta (43.3/8.3). Blair Trewin P.S. Looking at the difference between the RO and the airport during the period of overlap (1949-86), on the hottest days (37+ at the airport), the airport was, on average, 0.6 degrees cooler than the RO, with the largest difference on any such day being 1.8 degrees. Based on that, I'd expect the frequency of 40+ days in the city to be comparable to that of 39+ days at the airport - roughly a 1 in 10 year event. (The difference between the highest recorded temperature at the airport (39.6) and the RO (43.2) looks a lot bigger than that, but it needs to be borne in mind that the RO only went over 41.3 twice, in 1902 and 1940, both before the airport site opened, and that if the airport site had existed in 1940 it might have been expected to top 40 with a bit to spare). Minima are more dependent on local site characteristics than maxima are (although less so for extreme high minima than extreme low minima). Nevertheless, there is no evidence of a systematic difference on warm nights between the airport and city (the difference mostly shows in the winter half of the year in the bottom half of the frequency distribution); if anything, those nights with 25+ minima suggest that the airport is marginally (0.2 degrees on average) warmer under those conditions, although there is a bit of scatter in both directions. Again, the difference between the highest RO (28.0) and airport (26.1) minima is a function of length of record, not a systematic difference between the sites (the 28.0 was also in 1940). I wouldn't rule out the possibility of a 30+ minimum in Brisbane - the most likely scenario being very windy conditions following a very hot day (and the most likely timing, in my opinion, being November or December) - but the new site doesn't make it any more likely. Apparently yesterday at about 3pm there was a good drop of hail in Chiltern (about 20k south of Albury/Wodonga on the Hume freeway). Slightly smaller than fingernail size and went for about 5 minutes and laid on the ground for some time. Here at Rutherglen 17k away, we never even got a shower until about 7pm. Raining here at 6 this morning until 12.30pm. 4mm total since last night.
It's a long time since I've seen all the dams full and water laying in all the paddocks around here. Very wet under-foot.

Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi Laurier, Bussie and others, (Written offline, Monday 4:30pm) Here, here, Blackheath is a gorgeous town. I echo Laurier's remarks, entirely. I have been coming here for over 25 years and have lived here for a bit over three years and I have a great love for the place. Snow, wind, thunderstorms/hail, mists - at times very thick and sunsets and sunrises to die for. Not to mention the views, high cliffs and waterfalls etc, that are also breath taking. I had lunch at Mount Victoria pub today (a small town a few kilometres to our north) and then visited a well known bookstore. The owner, Allan, has lived here for a long time and says that this year has been one of the best snow seasons he can remember. Mind you, not for snow depth, but for the frequency of falls. I've spoken to a number of older locals and each one has said similar things. We've had at least five cold/snowy outbreaks this year, with a number of those having snowfalls over two days or more, four days in the May 28th outbreak. It's been a great winter! Well, mostly. Seeing my ex-fiancee for the first time in 13 years at Mount Vic pub, (She lives in Adelaide) wasn't so great. Just ask my wife :-( Lindsay Pearce Laurier Williams wrote: > > Blackheath, Bussie, which is the highest village in the Blue > Mountains, 100km west of Sydney. I left uni after my only lecture for the day at 11am, and headed out west, passing through the first of Sydney's storms, experiencing some lightning and brief heavy rain, but I knew this was going to head out to sea, so wanted to be in the clearer air behind the storm in case anything developed on the ranges. I got out to Richmond(Sydney traffic of 1.5 hrs at midday) by 12:30pm, to be greeted by a less enthusiastic sky, with the massive storm out to sea and connected line extending back into the Hunter, but there was nothing over me or on the ranges except small cu. I went and got some lunch only to come out to find some of the Cu were growing quite strongly right on top of me. Of more interest though was the storm that had now become visible to the W/SW. After a phone call to James Harris, I decided to head after this cell. However, I didn't have to go far at all before the cell hit me, and I ended up having to double back into Richmond. This cell was moving... It was quite lightning active with numerous CGs that I witnessed. I got very heavy rain in Richmond, with some local minor flash flooding, and also small hail for about 2 mins to about 5mm in size. The storm was then moving into an area with quite low road density(to the E/NE), so I made do with sitting at the end of the Richmond RAAF base runway and watched the storm move off into the distance with constant thunder and plenty of CGs to keep me happy. The mammatus on the back end was beautiful too. After this, the day seemed to pretty much die, as presumably the trough line progressed to the NE, but all in all, it was a thoroughly successful, if not completely unplanned, chase. Big thanks to Matt Smith, Max King, James Harris and Prof Anthony Cornelius for mobile updates - great help guys :) Matt +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "dann weatherhead" To: Subject: aus-wx: Sydney Storms! Hey everyone

The day began with a storm. After another late night due to uni work, i was awoken by my father who was informing me that there was some very interesting to the west. I hauled myself out of bed to encounter sunshine, but black to my west. It began raining lightly at first, an then poured down.  It eased up again before a dusting of pea size hail for about 20 seconds. I then heard my first clap of thunder in ages! It was a close strike too, and it was a great feeling again. We had some pretty good thunder and some very close strikes for a 10 minute period after the hail and rain (lightning came after the heaviest rain and the hail). The sky cleared soon afterwards, with the morning storms dominating the eastern sky all morning and afternoon.

I had classes from 12-2. Entering class there was some cu hu dotting the mountains, and when i left at 2pm there was some nice bases including a very nice RFB to my north in Richmond, where Matt Pearce received. With this promising horizon i set off for the storm. I was directly north of me at this stage, and from the looks of it was moving east. I decieded to move NE to try at least to get in front of it, knowing that if I decided to go north, I would only see the back.

I traveled north of St Mary's to Mt Druitt, where I observed a magnificent shelf cloud formation, and then a lowering of some description. While stopping to take a photo here i was smacked on the head by some hail, then, ducking for cover i witnessed the first of two strange encounters with hail. It seemed as if someone was standing about me an dumped a truckload of hail onto my car and surrounds (about 10-15m around the car). The hail bucketed down and stopped with heaps of hail falling in about 5 seconds, only around the car and nowhere else. Anyway moving along again about 5 minutes down the road at round-about near Rooty Hill i had a second weird encounter with the hail. By now i had established that the storm was in fact moving NE, and the rain subsequently was doing the same. At the round about the rain stopped to which hail again dumped down smacking into the left hand side of my car with an accompanying NE gust of wind. A few seconds later rain smack the right hand side of my car, with a gust of wind coming from the SW. In front of me i saw one rain shaft moving away from me to the NE, and a hail shaft moving toward me from the NE.(the hail was very small the second time, on reconisable from the sound and the icy remnants on the windscreen). This occurred for about 10 seconds, to which the rain then just came down as heavy as it was before, and i was left amazed by the small scale features storms can give us.

The surrounding sky was filled with new activity and i became aware that in my current position staying south of the storm, i was going to get rained on and loose my view. Thanks to a good run with the lights, i made it to CarLovers at Blacktown where Matt Smith was, just before the rain got me. We observed the original cell which was moving to the NE now. There was some very nice features to this cell. That rain i had gotten since Rooty Hill was all due to surrounding precipitation cu, and newer developments off the main cell. I toured around Blacktown, but got stuck in the traffic so i decided to head home due to the increasing uni work.

A pretty fun chase, and some good photos to come out of it i am sure.

Thanks to Matt Smith and James Harris for their calls.

Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi all, While standing in the drizzle and ~gale W'lies this evening - mum came home and informed me that the Gateway Bridge has been closed due to high winds! For those who don't know, the Gateway Bridge is a tall bridge that was built to allow ships to pass under it, and was built to bypass the Brisbane CBD. During strong winds, the speed limit is reduced to 60km/h - however during the afternoon, a truck/ute was flipped over from the high winds! The northbound lanes were originally closed due to the accident, but soon after they closed the southbound lanes too as it was too dangerous! Hey there fellow weather watchers.

Lovely storms formed just just just N of my house this arvo and after work I raced home and to the nearest vantage point and started taping.  Anthony Cornelius kept me updated as to what was happening on radar and a few nice pulses saw the cells go pink and red on radar.  Took 25 mins of video in the end of strong updrafts, lowerings (some very interesting ones at that), the sunset and heaps more.  At the rate we are going this storm season is going to cost me a fortune in tapes and film.

Victoria might get a break tomorrow but storms are again likely wednesday, friday and possibly saturday.  That would give us 6 out of 8 days with storms in some part of Victoria.

Jane is currently sitting on one of the many favourite hills in Melbourne in the E suburb of Pakenham watching the cells pulse away into the darkness - hoping for a few flashes of lightning to boot.

Enough from me.

Hence, there may be some "heat island effects" seen - more so at night I'd say though. I think the new site will have temperatures much closer to Ipswich's then the AP.
