These include: - Juan Antonio Samaranch repeatedly expressing his concern at the possibility of rain because the Games are being held in spring and not summer (or words to that effect). Summer may be the dry season in Spain, but it certainly isn't in Sydney (or indeed in most of the other places that Olympic Games have been held). A quick check of climate normals reveals that seven of the last 10 Olympic cities have higher mean monthly rainfalls in the month(s) when their Games were held than Sydney has in September, three of them (Tokyo, Seoul and Atlanta) by substantial margins (and Sydney RO is a wetter site than Homebush, anyway). - Michael Knight, showing long-range forecasting powers unknown to anybody in the Bureau, reportedly assured the aforementioned Senor Samaranch that it would be fine and sunny for the duration of the Games. - but the best of the lot so far, in my opinion at least, goes to someone described in today's 'Age' as a 'private long-range forecaster from Wangaratta' who was reported as having predicted two years ago that there was an 80% chance of heavy rain for the Olympics. This sort of claim is bizarre enough, but the cake was taken when he said that it would be brought by 'cold fronts sweeping up from Antarctica'. Cold fronts sweeping up from Antarctica (or, to be more precise, the northerlies preceding them) may bring heavy rain in Wangaratta, but they certainly aren't associated with it in Sydney, where south-westerlies have, normally, long since lost most of their moisture. Tasman Sea Lows would be more like it... Further examples are eagerly awaited, with gold, silver and bronze to be awarded at the conclusion of the event. Is there a server problem, industrial action or has the weather been cancelled until the end of the games by order of Juan Antonio Samaranch and Michael Knight? Very windy in Canberra at the moment with a few very light showers on the Brindabellas. Also noticed some pretty cold air in far southern Victoria and Bass Strait - this looks to be heading east rather than north-east unfortunately. At 11.40 am,(5/9/00) a number of the BoM forecast web pages return blank under the headers (ie for at least Vic and NSW). Is there a server problem, industrial action or has the weather been cancelled until the end of the games by order of Juan Antonio Samaranch and Michael Knight? Very windy in Canberra at the moment with a few very light showers on the Brindabellas. Yesterday a fire started in the Karrawatha State Forest in the Drewvale area, E of Calamvale. It was this fire that was responsible for blacking out about 300 000 households in the district for a period yesterday afternoon. Coming home from work last night I could see the glow of this fire from several kms away and when I got close to in on Wembley Rd, there was a very long wall of flames - quite an awesome and scary sight. Today the fire was still going in the forest (I could tell as I live ~1km away) and during this afternoon it jumped Wembley Rd and raced towards several houses and schools. Two schools were evacuated including Woodridge High but in the end the Firies and SES saved the day! The only damage included some burnt out cars, a few destroyed farm sheds and a part of a house's roof. We were lucky the winds were only light most of the day, but of course for tomorrow and Thursday we're in for strengthening NW/N winds which will increase the fire danger. My place has now had about 15 consecutive days where smoke has been in the air from distant fires. At times ash has been falling like light snow! Hopefully tomorrow/Thurs won't be too bad. Tonight we have a lovely seabreeze and DPs have risen into the 15-16C range but we still have a thick smog *Cough* Over and out!
