I don't have any gust information. Mt Lofty was averaging 34kt gusting 48kt at 7.30am. All times are CST. No wonder given the pressure gradient over the area. At 7.30am, Oodnadatta's barometer (QNH) was 1009 while Neptune Island was 988.5 -- 20hPa over 850km. Adelaide's pressure dipped below 990 between 6.30 and 7.30, bottoming out at 989.5 at Kent Town at 7am. Some heavy rain between 3 and 6am -- Kimba 10, Parawa 10, Loxton 11, Renmark 11 the best but lots between 4 and 10 across the southern half of the state. Maitland had 19 and Cape Border 20 between 9pm and 6am. Is anyone up there going to be chasing today? LAPS is indicating only marginal buoyancy, but a fantastic shear profile with sfc-600 hPA shear of 48 knots, and SRH -459 m^2s^-2 (this is with sfc winds 020/15KT). Low level moisture is the big problem of course - looking at CAPEs of ~500 J/kg at dew points of 14C and sfc T 28C. The cap would be about 3C under these circumstances. A pretty sharp shortwave trough lies to the well to the west of Brisbane this morning moving rapidly eastwards, with some upper troughing evident as well. 9 am (EST) obs across Brisbane have temps in 23-24C range, and dew points 13-15. Appears a seabreeze has come in across the city already. Just hope the strengthening NWerly doesn't dry everything off. Thunderstorms are currently active in southwest Qld/northwest NSW. Could be an interesting day! It was a java webpage that plotted their positions. Also, does anyone have information on any website or a Win95 program that tracks the orbits of the NOAA Polar Orbiting weather satellites? On this site: http://www.marine.csiro.au/~lband/weather/index.html it has "The next pass is NOAA12 orbit 48384 on 06/09/2000 at 19:03 UTC" which updates after each new data is received. What I want to know is what times of the day will NOAA12 and NOAA14 pass into view of a receiving station in SE Australia. eg. For yesterday afternoon/evening (6th Sep) the CSIRO site in Tasmania received these: NOAA12 0602z NOAA14 0635z NOAA12 0741z NOAA14 0817z NOAA12 0923z I have contacted the author of the CSIRO page for info, and received this response. But I'm not really sure where to go from there. ----- The "next pass" information is based on our own calculations as to when our receiver can expect to start receiving NOAA AVHRR data, ie when the spacecraft first appears above our horizon. The information will be slightly different for locations north or south of us. There is a heap of free software out on the Net which will calculate this Tbus information from the latest Two Line Elements (TLE) information from NOAA see ftp://celestrak.com/pub/elements/weather.txt We have been using some freeware called Xsat for some non-operational scheduling but we use much more sophisticated home-grown astronomical and scheduling software suites than the freeware available on the Net. We use a steerable dish to capture the high resolution high bandwidth HRPT data stream form the NOAA spacecraft. With the spacecraft moving over the earth at 6 klm per second we need the most accurate orbit prediction programs availablehave to ensure the dish is aimed ready for the instant the satellite rises above our horizon. Anyway I hope this information is useful to you. With all the ready-made and plans for home-made APT receivers as described on the Net, I'm sure you'll be able to find either a site with the latest Tbus or programs which will enable you to calculate your own from the TLE's. ----- ================================================================== Michael Bath mailto:mbath at ozemail.com.au McLeans Ridges NSW http://australiasevereweather.com/ Australia http://www.lightningphotography.com/ Secretary ASWA Inc. http://www.severeweather.asn.au/ ================================================================== +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "John Woodbridge" To: Subject: RE: aus-wx: Wind speed Date: Thu, 7 Sep 2000 11:37:46 +1000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook CWS, Build 9.0.2416 (9.0.2911.0) Importance: Normal Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Maybe good ol' Ch 7 editorially juxtaposed the last two digit, i.e., 116 became 161. Last night to morning, we had countinsously rain until after 8:30am, we got 30mm from a rain band. I was pleased to see some good steady rain to soak the ground. Of course the weather was rough. We had some squally wind and short burst heavy falls in the morning. There will be showers and windy during the day. Severe wind advice for South Australia including Greater Adelaide. No embedded thunderstorms from rain band unfortunately. There were thunderstorms with rain mostly over Northern half of South Australia. I have seen on Aviation metar Briefing, the wind gust to 61 knots has affected in Oodnadatta. Are there mountains in the area that could be creating areas good for rain in that local, or even blocking the radars view past them? But if I can now be serious now, and point a few things out: - I had my relatives who have competed in the olympics been called druggos - I have been told I shouldn't be on the list, because I talk in IRC - I have been called narrow minded - I have been singled out and called boring/dull Now, of course I'm not offended by these - but I don't see why I should have to put up with it? I sent the email to prove a point - you can joke all you like, but if you're not careful you'll still offend some people. If you know some one, you can joke around with them - but when you're emailing the aussie-weather list, you're emailing nearly 200(?) people, many of whom you don't even know and can take what you say in any context. All I ask is that when people send their emails to the aus-wx list, that they try and think about how the people you're referring to will respond if you're making a slightly upsetting statement/joke. For those who often meet each other on a regular basis, there's little or no problem. For those who you don't know, things can often be taken the wrong way and out of context if you're not careful. The chart shows a NE-SW sloping cold front on the western NSW and Vic borders. At 2pm in both Victoria and NSW there are some very cool temperatures along the inland slopes, tablelands and coast. Examples include: Wagga 9, Griffith 11, Bathurst 7, Cooma 5, Canberra 8, Camden 10, Nowra 13, Sydney 15, Bendigo 7, Horsham 9, Albury 9, Hamilton 8. All these temps are ahead of the cold front. Behind the cold front are Mildura 18, Renmark 17. Over northern inland NSW there are much higher temperatures eg Bourke 29, Cobar 26. Obviously the cool temps in NSW and Vic are partially the result of cloud and rain. They are also partly the legacy of the previous SW airmass. As the analysis chart is an MSL chart should there not be frontal boundaries drawn to separate the quite sharply different temperatures? I would suggest that a warm front should be drawn across NSW (in NE-SW direction) with the cold front (which will bring warmer surface temperatures) being more aptly shown as an occlusion at least in southern NSW and Victoria. The other reason I think a warm front/occlusion should be shown is that the persistence of the colder surface air (even if it is fairly shallow) is also likely to have an impact on the trough as it moves eastward - with the warmer air being forced into rising over the colder air (to a greater extent than otherwise)thereby enhancing precipitation and possibly even prompting some storms - given sufficient conditional instability. I would be interested in the views of others on the list on this topic. Normally, it will not measure much more than about 5 km across, give or take a little. It is part of one echo, a small appendage that is curved if the radar is scanning it from relatively near range. Otherwise, it will often be a small appendage extending from a single echo. This is called an appendage. Congratulations Clyve - keep it coming (the forecasts as well as the rain). Many Victorian sites have not (yet) reached double figures, which takes some northern Victorian sites into unusual territory - Kerang's current maximum of 10 would, if it ends up being the maximum, be its second lowest on record for September. Canberra (9) is also currently looking at its coldest September day since 1985, although I'd be surprised if 9 ends up being the maximum. Also of note is the remarkable contrast between western and eastern Sydney. There is nothing unusual about large temperature contrasts in this area, but normally they're the other way around! Western Sydney stations like Richmond, Penrith and Badgerys Creek had only reached 11-12 by 1500, whereas the coastal sites had got to 18 or 19. No thunderstorms though which is typical for this year. News of a fallen tree killing one person in the Adelaide Hills and a River Torrens Flood Advice was issued earlier this afternoon, (the first this year I think???) Anyway not much rain today I wouldn't expect heaps tonight either. Think the pattern from now on looks like it will be pre-frontal stuff that brings the most rain and not much in the way of unstable air-streams behind the fronts or lows. I really hope it starts to warm up soon. This winter hasn't been good for storms and I would rather see the end of it!!! Very intense wind gust moved through just then would estimate it at atleast 45knots. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Does anyone have any information or photographs of the snowfall at Ayers Rock on 11th July 1997????? Would love to get hold of anything at all that you might have (pics, video, eyewitness reports, satpics, loops etc etc etc) on the southern Alice Springs region and Ayers Rock on that particular date (also Kings Canyon)). BTW, I think there were a couple of books published with pics of the event in them but I can't remember titles or publishers & I think the Australian Womens Weekly also had an article on it with photos - any scanning or memory jogging you might like to do here would be very greatly appreciated. Now, I know this is asking a bit much but you never know......the Centralian Advocate published a pic of 'snow' on a railing at Ayers Rock taken by a lady who lives in Geelong by the name of Erica Wiener. Does anyone down that way know of anyone by this name? (yeah, ok, so that's a bit of a long shot) Many thanks for your help, Jane -------------------------------- Jane ONeill - Melbourne cadence at stormchasers.au.com Melbourne Storm Chasers http://www.stormchasers.au.com ASWA - Victoria http://www.severeweather.asn.au -------------------------------- +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Originating-IP: [198.142.93.199] From: "Shaun Whelan" To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: aus-wx: Nowra Storms Date: Thu, 07 Sep 2000 22:24:01 EST X-OriginalArrivalTime: 07 Sep 2000 12:24:01.0325 (UTC) FILETIME=[81005DD0:01C018C6] Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com What a day to get a storm. Driving home from work at about 5pm with the radio on a non station (90.0) and not hearing anything, filled up with petrol, walked out to the car, saw a flash and thought it was the fluroescent lighting. Drove a bit down the road and a nice big flash and a static crash proved it wasn't the fluro lights. From there to home I had my head against the windscreen looking at some great CG and CC. One CG was about 3k ahead of me (towards JB).Got home and got the video camera out and ran out the back,CG AND CC still going off, pressed rec. and about 5-10 secs. later got a CG (distant, bright main leader, dim but visible branches), CC and a CG (BRIGHT) about 2k ahead with a possible CC joiner (don't know, had my head in the viewfinder) all within 2 seconds. It's on the vid and I'll try to get it on here soon. I would have posted earlier but my CD-Rom crashed yesterday and took my HDD with it(software only). So I've had to go and buy a new CD-Rom,install it and install Windows and all the assoc. s..t. It's now 11:20, I'm going to bed. Will give more details on the morrow.
