Pissing down in Christchurch this Sunday morning, and only about 4 C. The snow is probably falling to below than the 500 metres it's forecast to get down to. Yesterday, the temperature was in the high teens in the city, while the cold southerly was already making an impact further south - about 8cm of snow at Wanaka, and heavier falls on the skifields. At least this cold, wet spell should clear up tomorrow. The twister caused extensive destruction in a 200 metre wide strip, damaging homes, uprooting trees and bringing down power lines. Country Fire Authority captain, Ritchie Gardiner says he saw it coming shortly after 7:00 pm AEDT. "I had a friend over at the time and we actually saw the funnel come down," he said. "It had a lot of debris in it. "At that stage we knew we were in trouble. "It started heading towards us, we grabbed the kids and headed to the front of the house and comforted them. "It actually turned in my backyard and missed our house, missed my shed, tore some bits off my shed, and went through the neighbour's backyard and through the neighbour's house." http://www.abc.gov.au/news/weather/weath-10sep2000-8.htm Nic Sykes ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nick Sykes" To: Sent: Sunday, September 10, 2000 11:24 AM Subject: Re: aus-wx: Tornado: NE Victoria > Hey all > > This is a recording of the 11am ABC news story on the tornado in NE Vic. > > Real Media > > http://seaustraliasatpics.virtualave.net/tornado2.rm > > Wav > > http://seaustraliasatpics.virtualave.net/tornado2.wav > > Nick Sykes > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Nick Sykes" > To: > Sent: Sunday, September 10, 2000 10:35 AM > Subject: Re: aus-wx: Tornado: NE Victoria > > > > More details of the Tornado in NE Victoria > > > > As Bussie said the exact location of the tornado is not yet certain, as it > > was hard to make out the name from the news report but it is either > Mulwala > > (Yarrawonga) or Milawa(Wangaratta). > > > > Eye Witness accounts describe a funnel with debris. Martin, the records you were talking about would be appreciated. Well it looks like more rain is heading Adelaide's way. I wonder what impact it will have on Mt Bold and the Onkaparinga River as well as the rest of Adelaide. I tried to go up to Mt Bold yesterday but the road was shut (Water over the Road) plus too much water being released for safety of the public, instead I saw the Clarendon Weir, it was an impressive sight. Heaps of people taking photos etc. Then I went to Kangaroo Creek tried to go past Lobethal but there had been a mud slide on the road. Kangaroo Creek's water levels still were not all that high. Went back down through Newton on the way home and on my way was hit by an impressive shower, associated with the on-shore airstream. Anyway fairly interesting looking mass of cloud in the Bight but it looks like it is heading more towards Melbourne. I wonder how much rain we will get out of this system I wouldn't be expecting that much but it looks like the air infront of the developing cold front in the Bight is very moist with lots of low level cloud. Would like to here from more people about their views on the development of the system. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. This has caused a huge rise in river levels all the way down to the mouth at southport. It certainly looks very impressive, I travelled from Clarendon down to Port Noarlunga this afternoon carrying out flood assessments with the CFS, however at this stage we are not expecting too many problems tonight. However if the tides had been a little higher it might be a different story. Certainly the level is not as high as we had in 1992 when we were sandbagging houses in Old Noarlunga though. I will see if i can get down there tommorow and get some pics if it still looks good. There's some pretty awesome damage down there (about 50ks SE from here), and is possibly the same storm that I videoed which produced the two rainbows. Although I never filmed long enough to catch that incident. Do we ever? Groan. I stopped filming from my vantage point just on the outskirts of Rutherglen about 6-6.15pm and this "incident" occurred about 7pm. I can tell you though that the Honey factory which doesn't look to be that old is now just a twisted wreck. I'm not experienced enough to say what it was or it's intensity, but straight line winds don't twist solid steel from my observations. One badly damaged home, which the owner was away at the time. And lots of trees down and other building damage. Looked to have a damage path of about a Kilometre or so. There was plenty of Helicopters around when I got there about 12.30 or so. Police I think, CFA, and TV choppers. Couldn't get near anything for a while and when we could........ Don't take kids with you. Grin. No doubt it'll be on the news. Over to Jane........... I can tell you another thing. It is a very wet area, not far from the flooded King & Ovens rivers. From the learner....... I got some photo's back that I took at the Rally of Melbourne today and on 2 photo's that I took of a double rainbow at Yarra Glen, there are some of these streaks. The double rainbow was beautiful and having some rally cars just made it all the more interesting for me. Now, I can't remember all the details from the subsequent posts on this topic, but I do remember someone mentioning the possibility of sun light reflecting internally in the camera. I can't say wether this was the case in the original photo's, but it couldn't be the reason for the streaks in my photo's. Mainly because I was taking the photo's with the sun behind me, as you have to to take photo's of rainbows, also because I had a visor mounted on the lens. At first I thought it might have been a rain drop illuminated by the sun or the camera flash, but the size of the streak would indicate larger rain than was falling at the time. Unfortunately I was unable to ask the lab about the streaks as I didn't see them until later. But the rainbow shots were the only 2 photo's from 2 rolls of 36 exposure film to show these marks. Anyone have any ideas that I may have missed reading in the last thread. I will bring the 2 photo's along to the next Melbourne ASWA meeting. I first noticed them on radar about 9am and watched them track up the coast a fair way offshore. The interesting thing was that about 10:30am the anvil from one of the storms(I am using that term cautiously) was overhead!!! As Anthony Cornelius pointed out to me on IRC, this would be possible given the upper level circulation around the upper low just offshore, causing SE flow, and an offshore anvil to be blown over land. At this point, I decided to go for a drive down to the beach, and found a magnificent lookout at Newport on Sydney's Northern Beaches. The system was quite substantial but it was easily 100km offshore, so no features could be made out at all. However, the anvil direction was the most amazing part of these showers/storms to me, as you don't often see that in winter. After this moved out, the rest of the day was dead boring with Cu Hu around and DP of 5C... Hi all.
Just had a  squall line go through Leopold and recorded a gust of 104kph.at 2310hrs lasted just 1 minute, was accompanied by heavy brief rain and rather high temps of 15c with no significant fall after the wind shifted from northwest to west , interestingly the bar continues to fall after the passage of the squall line . regards Clyve H.
