Phil Phil and all, We couldn't find any other way of measuring the damage path on the day because we couldn't get a scale map of the 'metropolis' of Milawa (1 highway & 3 cross streets) - so I devised a method of guestimating it by driving from the furthest extent of the damage path at right angles to the main road & measuring that, then turned right and drove to the furthest extent of the damage path in that direction - that gave me the 2 right angled sides of the triangle - so if I knew the length of the hypotenuse (and then added an estimated 200mtrs back from the road that I couldn't do any more than guesstimate) I'd have a pretty accurate figure........ ______________ | / | / | /<------ length of damage path | / | / | / | / | / | / | / | / | / | / | / | / | I'll find a CFA map (Bussy???) and check it, but I make it 1.277kms... So that means the NZ population density is around 13 per sq km, compared to Oz at 2.6 per sq km... Vegetation: I've visited NZ rain forests, ever been to the Daintree? The forecast is for a deepening trough to approach from the west or north west. I would say this would be our first good chance of getting some thunderstorm activity since April almost. But probably to soon to tell. Reminds me of last years continual low pressure trough situation where troughs basically came once a week during spring. The target area though of around Parkes to Forbes did fire up weak cumulonimbus calvus but extremely weak. There seemed to be a couple of caps around - one that I had anticipated was around 700mb level. I knew it was a marginal situation due to the lower moisture levels. However, this chase provided the opportunity to test new areas and also the models. I was quite impressed with observing the region where the middle level to upper level wind changed - the "discontinuity" easily observed by the movement in the cloud. Most of all, it was great to be on top on Mt Cannobolis - easily the best view I have ever seen. We didn't bother moving towards the target area as anything that could have happened would have moved closer. In terms of the shear, I had studied that quite closely. I was hoping that storms would develop with or preferably ahead of the trough line and the shear would have been sufficient. It turned out the shear wasn't needed because the cumulonimbus did not reach high enough.. The castellanus has persisted so the trough has stalled somewhat. I took the opportunity of meeting David Carrol. Was also hoping to meet up with Ross Wilson. Perhaps another time. So jut summarizing....a bust. But at least there are no ill feelings as I knew it was a very marginal case. Mario and I learned quite a bit through comparing the observations and the model for the various layers. This helps with future interpretation.
