When you place a radar on top of a hill or mountain, you maximize "ground clutter" or the radar detection of earth objects. This clutter can obscure precipitation echo unless the radar is equipped with excellent clutter suppression. But my guess is that even if the radar is equipped with an excellent suppression device, it will still leave significant "clutter residue" behind. That residue will then obscure the weather. The second problem is that this raises the "radar horizon" which will obscure the near-ground weather even more than already occurs. The only way to try to correct for this is to add a negative elevation angle to the volume coverage pattern, if indeed, a VCP is used. But to do that will exacerbate the clutter problem still more. >The people at Glenrowan could see the "storm" > over Milawa the other night, I wonder if the radar could "see" into this > pocket if it was at Benalla? You are right, however. If the radar is not placed on higher terrane, then hills/mountains can obscure the lower portions of the weather on the other side of intervening obstructions. Oral histories, a collection of compelling stories told by Darwin identities of their Tracy experiences, these 'talking slide shows' (formatted in Macromedia Shockwave) provide a human perspective to living through the cyclone. Enjoy!! PS: I can't access the Darwin webcam from anywhere so I think a phonecall or a visit might be the go - Paul Mossman have you got a full day?????? However, some of the streaks were not all parallel. Chris did mention that he used a flash during these photos. This got the cogs ticking over in my head, and I came up with the following _possible_ explanation. (I wasn't sure if anyone else came up with an explanation prior to this.) The white light is due to reflection of the flash in nearby rain drops. Because they are near, they are out of focus and so appear as blobs. The brighter streaks have the greatest motion in the photo, and so are closer, hence their brightness. Fainter ones have a shorter path, and so when further away would appear dimmer, and would traverse a smaller apparent distance across the field. But why the does the light trail off from bright to dark? This is where my knowledge of how the flash works may be a bit dodgy. But I reckon that the initial bright splotch is due to the initial burst of light from the flash. After this, the light slowly (relatively speaking) dies off to darkness. Consequently, as the drop moves through the field, less light is being shone on it, and so it reflects less back, thus making the spot appear dimmer. There, how does that sound? Now with respect to Chris' photo where some of the streaks weren't parallel, he did mention that the drizzle was quite fine, with the wind blowing away from him. So I suspect in this case that the varying air motions would have moved the raindrops in all sorts of directions. However, in the photo given above, the drops were perhaps bigger or there was little wind around, hence the rain would have fallen in parallel streaks. Cheers -- Robert A.
