It was prompted by discussion about changes flowing from Simplenet's acquisition by Yahoo, which are likely to lead to higher costs and/or limitations on site size and traffic limits -- both anathema to Real Weather Websites, which tend to grow rather large! It might also be quite a useful vehicle for fostering the development of the many fantastic websites spawned by the aussie-weather list and ASWA. From: David Jones To: "Aussie Weather Digest (E-mail)" Subject: aus-wx: global warming. Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 10:12:09 +1000 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2650.21) Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com > If global warming were occurring, then wouldn't the lower atmosphere warm > as well? Just a couple more points on this. First the MSU T2R (the very popular sceptics series) is not a measure of low tropospheric temperatures. Approximately, the signal is weighted as 0.0150925, 0.115442, 0.301749, 0.297251, 0.291954 for the 200, 300, 500, 700, 850hPa levels. Meaning nearly 40% comes from the 500hPa level and above. Importantly, there is a non-trivial stratospheric signal, and the enhanced greenhouse effect and ozone depletion are known to cause a cooling in the stratosphere. The trosphere appears to be more responsive to volcanic eruptions and ENSO than the surface (not suprising given ~70% of the surface signal comes from the oceans - which are slowly varying). Associated with Pinatobo the surface globally cooled by ~0.2 while the trosphere cooled by ~0.4-0.6C. The bigger swings in the satellite/radiosonde temperatures on a year to year basis "contaminate" the trend signal more than is the case for the surface. The observed trend for the MSU (satellite data) is +0.57 C/century, but this has an error range of +/-1.57C/century. That means we can be confident from the MSU data that the true trend lies between -1.0 and +2.14C/century (with 95% confidence). "Best estimates" of what the "greenhouse" + natural variability trend should be for the same period is between +0.5 and +2.0C/century. That is there is reasonable probability that the trend observed in the short MSU record is consistent with projection of the "greenhouse" climate change. Hard science tells us that we cannot reject the hypothesis that the earth is warming due to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. You will never see this result mentioned on a sceptics web page..... Disturbingly, the MSU record shows quite consistent warming everywhere except over the Antarctic, where it shows a strong cooling. The stratosphere is lower and ozone depletion much more severe at these latitudes which begs the question of how much stratospheric cooling is contaminating the "supposedly" troposheric trend - I don't know the answer. As Blair has mentioned, prior to the MSU record, their is evidence that the troposphere warmed very quickly from 1965 to 1979 by almost 0.5C whereas the surface warmed by just 0.3C over the same period. Since 1979 the surface has warmed by about 0.4C and the trosphere by 0.1C. Taken together, these indicate a warming of approximately 0.7C at the surface and 0.6C in the trosphere since 1965 - a very good match in anybodies books! Well as it happens I am not all that into chasing storms, just love to sit at home watching, maybe taking a photo or video taping, plus I live more to the south so it would make it more difficult. We may meet one stormy day, we'll have to see. I really don't think the Bureau is preparing a good forecast for the trough development coming up this weekend. Two days of 27 degrees, I doubt it! But you never know, looks like and easy way out to me. By the way our forecasts for Adelaide never seem to like to contain the word thunderstorm in the headline, NSW forecasts use showers/thunderstorms, this rarely happens here, even hough the district forecast shows the possibilty of t'storms. I will be watching closely on Sunday and even late Saturday, the trough looks like it will drag a lot of warm air down our way. Maybe and hopefully this will be moist unstable air too. Plus the change mid-week looks good, a cold front and trough joining forces in WA. Like to here from other people on their predictions/forecasts for both the trough this weekend and the change next week. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. But it was interesting to note the change in moisture content of the air. When we set out, there was a distinctive moisture haze around. We arrived at Singleton around 3pm and Cu's were still building to the south but they were very much limited in height, while to the north, large Cb's were building. We noticed that the air seemed to dry out also but still noticed the moisture haze to the east. So it would seem that there was some sort of dry line. In fact, Mark mentioned something about a dry line when I was speaking to him on the phone. From what I have read of US descriptions, this situation seems to match a dry line scenario, particularly in terms of the change in moisture and the change in cloud height that we noticed. It was the real cloud as it was introduced formally on the show " One day in Telly Tubby land a cloud appeared". It kicked A as well, bringing a shower which created a puddle for Poh, La La, Dipsy, and Twinky Winky to splash in. I guess that is at the root of lack of rain problem here and perhaps for our friend Les Lemon, the cloud is now a celebrity and only does paid appearances. Michael > around? Conditions rapidly cleared around 11am, yet the wind remained a NE sea breeze. This had my hopes of action simmering, but as each hour ticked away the Cu became became less and flatter, it was becoming evident that storms were not going to occur. Every thing fitted the dry line scenario so common here at this time of year, except the seabreeze. The seabreeze was probably only a few hundred metres thick and although it was warm and humid it just was enough to be a bonafide mositure source. This made me wonder whether: (a) all tornadoes begin (or have a middle or end) as condensation funnels, and (b) that means that the local relative humidity would have to be 100% The second part got me wondering whether there had been any research into sudden increases in local RH prior to tornadogenesis and if it was a worthwhile area of investigation... Any thoughts? Kevin from Wycheproof. P.S. Thanks to Habit and Astro and zoso for stimulating B2!!!!! _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. I maybe should screen my e-mails so my son does not correct the spelling. And they only mention "a" cloud, not "The" cloud(hallowed be thy name.....)
