All pics and a chase report will be up by tomorrow afternoon Thanks to Michael Bath, John Woodbridge and Matt Smith for radar updates! The radars are not transmitting nor receiving at precisely the same frequency. So there is usually no interference with each other. There is a somewhat experimental approach called "Bistatic radar" in which small receivers with small antennas are placed in the field to receive and process radar microwaves that are not backscattered toward the radar but are instead, scattered laterally or in other directions. Combining the processed signals can produce a dual Doppler presentation that will show, over a local area, two dimensional flow. These two dimensional flow vectors can then form input into other algorithms that combine and integrate them, solving for the vertical component of motion. In this way, complete three dimensional flow can be obtained and displayed for small regions by using a single Doppler radar. Les ************************ Leslie R. There are several computers used in the design of a radar. These include the signal processor, receiver processing, status and control processor, the "Radar Product Generator" that is the application processor that runs all he meteorological pattern recognition algorithms, as well as the operator position processors. In the initial NEXRAD design (the most computerized radar in history at that time) we used Vendor specific mid sized computers. However, they are now being replaced by "open systems" standards-based processors. These computers are UNIX based (except in the new NEXRAD-like, foreign built) "WSR-98D" which used Windows NT processors. At any rate we are now dealing with computers not far removed from desktop computers and a far cry from Crays or anything even remotely approaching the super computer or even the midsize computer. There had been years of political discussion about first the need for, and later the justification for spending billions on the Cray. I guess they have to feed the media something to ,make them think it is being used to the utmost. I know there is a project related to providing a 3D animation of a typhoon when it is close to Hong Kong and that the current hold-up is that the Cray cannot keep up with the processing involved. While up in the computer room at the Observatory, I have been shown brief snippets of animations of a couple of storms that were made on the Cray but could not be shown until long after the storm had been and gone. They have a team of programmers and meteorologists working on the project which I understand has never been done anywhere before. There is also unfortunately a theory going around that the videos produced could not be put on the web in real time because the band-width needed would virtually shut down the Internet in HK if the URL were to be released to enthusiasts like us. Anyway, I guess the story will develop one of these years when they get it all sorted out. Maybe Mother Nature is saving SA up for some great storm activity, I think maybe that's wishful thinking. Will we ever get a storm here in Adelaide? I think we have had only three this year, 1 was only one rumble of thunder and one flash of lightning. Not sure about the forecast of this trough and front system by BOM that is approaching SA today. Melbourne is forecasting early rain tomorrow and maybe that is from the high cloud developing in the Bight, but only a shower or two for Adelaide seems a bit light on! I hope we see more than that, maybe the high temperatures before the front are meant to burn off precipitation, I can't find an explanation? _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. He has agreed to share his knowledge on roads in NSW and which are applicable to normal cars - tar and good gravel, which ones vary with weather conditions, and also which ones are just 4 wheel drive tracks. This is an important issue especially for those people venturing about to look at the weather and storms in the countryside. It can make the difference of being able to get to inaccessible places. Max will also cover the road know hows as he has done a fair bit of 4 wheel driving and this includes perhaps touching on use of cb radios. This should be a talk with a difference and once that anyone could use in the future. Max will refer to various maps covering regions and his knowledge. Please come along. Here, in this country, Crays and other super computers of their type are used meteorologically to run numerical models such as the ETA, AVN, NGM, and the MRF producing forecasts in 12 hour interval out to 10 days in the case of the MRF. The Eastern States have the advantage of closer proximity to the Pacific Ocean a wonderful source of moisture and this can interact with features from the West. In WA the Indian Ocean provides a nice source of moisture for Winter systems around Southern WA. In South Australia you have deserts to the NW, N and NE and even to the East in Summer. The southern Ocean is cool and never provides the same mositure as the Pacific or Indian Oceans. I suppose when you look at our Geographical location it is amazing we get any rain at all! Let's hope Mother Nature can end her current cruel " torture " on Adelaide Storm lovers! It was not known whether the lightning actually hit the bridge but the prime ministerial party had to invoke an emergency procedure. Priscilla Williams, New Zealand's consul-general in Sydney, who was with the prime minister, said they were the most exposed group of walkers at the top of the bridge. "We heard the thunder clap and the lightning followed almost immediately and you could almost feel it," she said. "Our guide shouted 'code 100' and everyone immediately sat down so they were below the rail to which we were harnessed. "That meant our heads were not the highest thing exposed and if lightning hit it would hit the bridge and not our heads." The prime minister was not immediately available for comment. The walk to the top of the landmark bridge has become one of the city's hottest tourist attractions since a company began doing organized climbs two years ago. No WX mailing lists though. The line of storms you mention persisted from Jervis Bay right back through to Goulburn for a number of hours. Nothing spectacular with odd bits of yellow and green reflect. Heights at perhaps 25,000ft, maybe higher, but not much. It was the persistence that got me interested. Even late this afternoon isolated cells tried to pop up near Marulan, I was wishing for something to break the obvious cap a little. Here on the coast we had a nasty little seabreeze inversion, the smog trapped got so thick you would think there was a bushfire. Michael > > Just got a chance to pop up the road during my lunchbreak, and there is a very good looking line of storms probably around Nowra or a bit further south. Nice backshearing on the anvil, and the cell appears to be backbuilding. Might be an interesting day if this system is indicative of what might occur up and down the coast later this afternoon. > > As I am unable to access the internet from work, if this system is progressing northwards towards Wollongong, or other storm cells are heading this way, please email me, or phone 0418 671 851, or 02 4275 6494. I have both cameras ready to go, (35mm + digital). But I can be fairly sure something will happen, rode the bicycle to work today, sure to get dumped on this afternoon. At least I shouldn't be asleep when these cells are active, like th past couple of nights!! > > Andrew Godsman > > EOM > > NOTICE - This message contains information intended only for the use of the addressee named above.
