Nice lightning so far. But it died out 20 minutes later. Weather change has gone thru after that before midnight. I am so exciting and happy to see it again since August. Hope we might get some more thunderstorms in October. I live just to the south east of the CBD of Adelaide as well. I was about to head off to bed last night when some rain started to fall. I(Just after 11:00pm) looked outside and to the west, must have been just off the Adelaide coatline I saw a fairly large flash of lightning. The lightning strikes had large gaps between them but increased rapidly as the thunderstorm hit the southern Adelaide Hills, (at around 11:30pm or so) it moved quickly east inland after tracking south east, must have occurred down near the further most Southern Suburbs. The thunderstorm then slowed rapidly with more frequent lightning strikes, could only just here some faint thunder. Both horizontal and vertical lightning then occurred at one stage covering horizontally the whole hill top excellent show! At this stage I was viewing the far back of the storm got some video footage but not of the good lightning just a few flashes. There was a considerable gust of wind at one stage that ripped a few twigs off some trees as the storm hit the hills. Then the thunderstorm died out and no more lightning was could be seen. I had an enjoyable night even though the thunderstorm just missed Adelaide! I have been really craving some lightning activity and it was a great display _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. What has caught my eye with this event is the extent of the warmth and its duration (eg see http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/tempmaps/weekmaxa.shtml ). Along the surface the storms occur in the NW corner of a surface moisture tongue extending N from MEL, and right along a baroclinic zone that locally extends E-W. According to the AVN initialised 12Z on 28 September, a strong mid-level/upper-level jet is nosing into the area (at 21Z) which might explain the longevity (and hence organisation) of the electric action. The AVN claims that the area of interest is (once again) CAPE-free, and the MEL radar composite probably overshoots most of the stuff as evident in the faint radar reflectivity. This goes to show that there is a possibility that radars do not clearly show *existing* storms, and that storms can exist in zero-CAPE AVN atmospheres (the same is probably true for other models). Does anyone in NW VIC have some surface obs to report?? Looking at it from the front of my house (looking West) it kept to a pretty straight line throughout the morning and early afternoon with sporadic lightning increasing to 2-3 a minute around 12:30pm. The line was running approx W to E and was pretty uninteresting looking underneath. There were moments of mammatus, but these would quickly disappear. It probably looked better viewing from Wollongong as Nth of the line it was clear with only Cu moving through. At about 12:30pm the line started to move NE and the lightning picked up in intensity with some heavy passing showers and one CG less than 500 mtrs away which got both my young boys screaming. It turned yellow on the radar for about 10 mins, with one bit just Sth of Nowra and two others near Shoalhaven Heads. No images as Video camera and No. 1 camera were in car with wife and other son in Nowra. Come lunch time (1:00pm) it had cleared and there was a back shear to be seen as it moved out to sea. Nothing then until around4:30pm when there was some NICE building going on to the W & SW. But,alas, these quickly built, got an anvil and disintegrated. Perhaps some more action this afternoon or evening looking at the front moving through Eastern Vic at the moment. haveabloodygoodweekend Shaun Nowra _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Good chance of some storms around Sydney this afternoon. There are some chasers out, and ATM the jury is still our. But my post is more for the gusty NW winds that have kicked up in the last two hours. Coming from Penrith i have driven past two pretty major scrub fires, and a bush fire around the foothills of the Blue Mountains.  Certainly if these conditions keep up, going into our bushfire season, then we may see Sydney, and most of the NSW east coast under some sort of bushfire alert for the next few months.

Heres hoping for today :)

I'm not sure why, perhaps it's a lack of sounding/surface observations? But when I use ARL analysis/prognosis skew-ts and calculate my own CAPE, I get a fairly good figure (IMO) - certainly much more accurate then the AVN CAPE. I've often found it underestimates by far - perhaps its the algorithm. I'm assuming it's not forecasting SFC CAPE either, simply just using the bottom 100mb mean moisture - but still, even when I do that - I get more accurate figures then they do... I wonder if BOM will quickly update the forecast from a shower or two to more showers and a possible thunderstom for Adelaide, about a 1/2 an hour before the front crosses tomorrow like they did last night at 11:15pm when I actually saw the first flash of lightning. There almost seems to be no point of updating it at that time of night, although I do prefer an up to date weather forecast. I mean the only people who are going to look it at that time of night are weather heads, boat operators and plane operators and there were already flashes of lightning around. Couldn't they have predicted it early last night, lots of warm air, humidity increasing, active trough approaching plus what they called a significant cold front???? Anyway not much did end up developing except the thunderstorm I mentioned in my last e-mail. Wonder what tomorrow's weather holds in store. Won't hold my breath for a t'storm or lots of rain but you never know!!! _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. He has also reported the extremely low amounts of precip with these cells, but when it has rained they have been extremely large drops. Currently he has a very large RFB base behind him to the E . Looking at radar it doesnt look like anything special but the Lightning tracker is really going off. Hi Everyone,

Sydneys maximum temp almost got a Gold Medal for September today but missed out by only 0.1 of a degree. The max ended up coming in at 34.5 which is the hottest since 26th September 1965.

Here at my place in Blaxland the temperature reached a top of 33.1 at 2:55pm which is my highest recorded temp since the 18th March this year. The winds were also notably strong today with a top gust of 55 km/h being recorded here at 2:10pm.

I have included a link to a graph of todays Blaxland weather obs for those interested.

It was an unhealthy smoggy day here in Wollongong, but as the NW kicked in around 4pm it drove the seabreeze out to sea. This made quite a marked line on the ocean - clear air than a curtain of solid white smog at seabreeze front, a few staff started remarking and speculating what it was - they had no idea, so they had a quick lesson about inversions, etc. The remnants of the storm clouds blew through about 6pm.
