Alice Springs has been covered in a thick haze for the past 3 days or so. Apparently the fires were caused by lightning strikes earlier in the week. It's amazing how far smoke can travel without really dissipating. It has one bonus though - we've experienced some excellent sunsets over the 3 days. Still 36C today, but very dry. The only real problem was moisture. I wanted to stay as close as possible to the trough, as that is where activity would pop up if any did. After lots of ooooing and aaaaaing and wondering where I should go (maybe out west to Bathurst), I stuck to my original target area of Goulburn/Yass. AVN showed a tounge of higher RH pushing into this area. LI was around -2 to -3. Matt Pearce told me that DP's were still OK inland and that there were storms in the NSW/VIC border mid morning. High cloud concerned me, but I had the day off and had nothing to lose, and I was desperate to go on the first long chase of the season :) Anyway enough technical stuff, you propably want to know what happened :) On my way down to GLB James Harris msg'd me saying an STA was out for the Riverina, which raised my hopes a bit. DP's were around 17 in Sydney, but as I got closer to GLB they decreased, to 10C. I had some lunch and went to the local lookout.(GREAT 360degree views!) A stayed there for 40 minutes or so, a strong NW was blowing (constant gusts to 30-35 knots), and high cloud was now overhead. James called me again, and suggested I go west towards Yass, I could hear constant static on AM and he said that there was a storm in Canberra. I headed for Yass. The drive from Goulburn to Yass is just awesome, great views on either side of the road. I took a turnoff near Gunning that headed towards Gundaroo and eventually Queanbeyan. Just before i made this turnoff I saw my first CG of the day to the south. After about 20km or so I saw another CG and pulled over. A few nice dark RFB's, a largish looking storm towards Canberra, and lots of virga showers to my NW/W/SW. I could hear the odd rumble of thunder, and a saw a couple of CG's comming out of the LP bases. The storms were flying along but new development kept growing to the west. As each dark base passed over, I would get a couple of large drops, and lots of close CG's in fields around me (i was on a slight elevated ridge) but not enough rain to wet the ground!. This continued for a good 20-30 minutes as each base went over. It looked like heavy rain was falling down towards Canberra, and a clearing edge could be seen to the west. I decided to head back to GLB and follow the system NE back to Sydney. Just as I was about to leave, a dog walked up the road out of the middle of nowhere!, i closed the door and thought "this poor dog might get fried". He had a sniff around the car then went on his way. I was almost back at the turnoff to GLB when the last of the low precip cells was passing over. I pulled over and watched more CG's. As I turned my head to look out the window, a CG hit and it appearred to be on the road right infront of where i pulled off.! My eyes were playing tricks on me though. it was about 2-3 seconds before i heard thunder. A few seconds later, another CG hit. This one hit *JUST* behind me somewhere in a field, it made a loud "SNAP" then "BOOOOOOM". I got the sound on video which everyone can hear at the next ASWA meeting :) Clear skies were no overhead, and as i got back towards GLB it all seemed to be weakening. Refuelled, and drove back to Sydney to a nice red sunset, and dissipating cumulus and dead anvils. A good day, 550KM round trip. An interesting thing, was after the storms cleared near GLB, the temp was nice and cool, close to 20 maybe. But as I got into Sydney around 8pm, it was 28! which showed the front had not yet passed through. Big thanks to James Harris, Daniel Weatherhead, Matt Pearce and Jimmy for updates on what was happening around the place. Hence, unfortunately despite the late appeal, we are forced to stick with the silver medal. "As for bagging the BOM, when you consider that the Bureau had been downsized by about 35% in recent times, and the demands placed on it by the WWW etc have grown enormously, some of the recent criticism on this list is really unwarranted. If it were not for the Bureau and like public-good meteorological services, we would be still relying our local barometers for making forecasts! With the possible exception of the USA, the openness and service which we provide to the public is IMHO second to none, and something which the list should endeavour to preserve, rather than criticise." I don't believe that questioning (a) the carelessness of presentation of (b) accuracy of information provided is "bagging" as David seems to. The Bureau does not beed to be paraniod or inwardly looking all the time - take the comments postively and let's see if something can be done about them. Unfortunately it appears to have become more common in Bureau products and no body seems to care sometimes. I know in my line of work, such levels of inaccuracy or plain carelessness in presentation would eventually lead to loss of work but that is not the case with the Bureau. Hardly a day goes by without major transcribing error in forecasts - just count the number of times that a forecast has been issued with yesterday's temps (for example) only to be re-issued half an hour later corrected or often never re issued. Every time a forecast has to go out 2 or 3 times it costs money but not that of the person responsible for the stuff up in the first places. Look for example at the "Recent Events" for NSW last evening. The report of highest min tem in NSW was incorrect and the highest 9-3 rainfall was ghiven as Thredbo when it occurred at Perisher Valley - perhaps minor (it just happens to be in front of me at the moment) and everyone makes mistakes but how frequently? As for forecasting - that's another question but over the years the Bureau has made it quite difficult for any one else in this country to prepare their own forecasts by restrcition of availability of data and putting restriction on the use of the data when it is available. Imagine if the Bureau of Statistics attempted to place the same restrictions on financial institutions making economic predictions of tax payer funded data collections. Radar was only available at a price well after it was available in most other countries. The rediculous idea that some Bureaucrat has come up with to make only 3 10 minute time frames available free shows no understanding of the media through which it is available. Anyone with the right skills who wanted more could program to receive 3 all the time and "loop" them themseleves - there is no additional cost to the Bueau to make 6 available so no logic in their argument - it only penalising the small farmer etc who might not have the computer skills nor the finances available for a permanent internet connection. And what about the 64 km resolution radar - its available for the Olympics for free but not available otherwise, even at a cost. The same applies to the Doppler. As for reduction in staff, well all the staff employed by media graphics to provide a free service to newspapers in an area that there was previous commercialisation could come back into generral dutues along with the forecasters giving free advise to millionaire balloonists etc or the many forecasters providing the Yachting forecasst for the Olympics when one private forecaster with the AYC seens to be as successful ! Maybe what is really needed in one forecasting centre for the country rather than duplications in every states - then the better forecasters could be paid more because there would be fewer of them. State offices could become "shopfronts" to disseminate information. Anyway, that's just an opinion. cheers, Don White +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Sep 2000 23:40:33 -0400 From: David Hart To: Aussie-wx Subject: Re: aus-wx: OFFTOPIC: Time Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com On Sat, 30 Sep 2000, Jane ONeill wrote: > Afternoon all, > > Dumb question for the day............ > > I've started to come across time shown in the following format '1500 > EET'. > > What does EET stand for???? A burst of small hail at the end of it too. All this with 3 SES guys sitting on my neighbour's roof trying to work out how to stop one of my trees falling on it. After a lot of chainsawing and winching, finally all 7 SES people have gone & I now have a backyard full of tree(s) in very large pieces & bits missing out of the fence. 10.5mm out of it, my gumboots came out of the wardrobe & I've spent the last hour & a half working along side the SES team hauling stuff about. Have to give the SES an enormous amount of credit - they turned up within 20 minutes of my call (fortunately I was first in line as by the time they left just now they had another 12 jobs to go to in the eastern suburbs). I think it must be time for a cup of tea (after I nail the palings back on the fence). Benefit?: I can now see more of the weather coming at me than I could before!!!! Went for a drive and cleared off some of the local roads of debris - SES were already at work on the powerline that had been knocked down by a tree on a nearby road. What interests me about that squall line, is that according to that image, it wouldn't have hit us until about 20 minutes later. Does anyone have an ideas as to what us Tyabbians went through 20 minutes earlier? A "pre-squall wind" perhaps? :) I'm curious. (PS. It was a brilliant 7 minutes) Simon _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
