You can have a >really windy day and then right on sunset the wind will calm right down. But >then as soon as you think it has gone it comes back during the evening. Mathew, not really an explanation - Harald has done a good job on this - but this really brings me back to a few camping trips I have had on the Bogong High plains, where this can be a classic occurrence. I remember one night camping at ~1800m near Feathertop, with a light westerly to about 15 knots and scattered CU with bases around 1900m. Just on sunset the wind died down, and then within about 20 minutes picked up to around a 30 knot easterly Katabatic - it sounded like a train coming in when it first hit. What made this even more spectacular was the stratus which developed in the katabatic flow, which appeared as a great "waterfall of cloud" coming off the high plains (near Mt Loch), then racing back up the side of Feathertop. This easterly only lasted about 2 hours, and the night then returned to clear and ~calm. Cheers, David. I will be driving down and arriving on Friday early afternoon, and staying until Monday morning, on account of the Melbourne Marathon on Sunday. Which brings me to the point of this email, what is the feel for winds on Sunday am?? With warm weather forecast for the weekend the concern is a warm/hot northerly battering us all the way up from Frankston to Albert Park along the bay. Also, if there is the opportunity to chase, particularly on Fri or Sat, it would be great to meet up with someone with local road/observation knowledge to chase with. Give me a call on 0418 671 851. While in Melbourne I will be staying in North Melbourne, right near the freeway which should be handy for a speedy start to any chase. Looking forward to some Vic weather. On Monday 2nd October, they came from the northwest in late morning - I was out on Banks Peninsula at the time, and some of gust (during a 20 minute period) must've been close to storm force; trees came down over power poles. At the same time heavy rain (up to 700mm in the Tararuas north Of Wellington in a 2 day period!) caused major flooding in the southwest North Island. Yesterday started off mild (high teens) until early afternoon, and then a southerly gale sprang up, the skies darkened, and soon Christchurch was being pounded by hail and then rain (no thunder or lightning reported). The temperature dropped to about 6 C. The wind died down and the rain cleared later on, but the temoperature only recovered a few degrees. Not unusual for a spring day in Canterbury. BTW, Recently I've been hearing from this list about record high temps in eastern Australia, while I've also heard about it being chilly in Victoria and even more so in Tasmania (snow to 400 metres?) at the same time. I wonder where and how sharp the boundary between the 2 airmasses has been, and if it has resulted in any intersting weather (eg gales). You're making me envious :-) (I'd like to be running myself, but am on the sidelines at the moment with a stress fracture). Anyway, the cool change should be well and truly through by Sunday morning, and Melbourne should be into a W/SW flow. As you'd probably have worked out by now, much of the course (especially the second half) is very exposed to the wind, but it should be a cross-wind for the most part, except for the Black Rock section around halfway. Good to see they're going back to the Frankston-Melbourne course, too - the year I ran it was a convoluted and pretty boring loop around the centre and south of the inner city. I was reading in a paper (thanks to Harald for the reference, and I'll reply to your email soon) how it is possible for the LI and CAPE to vary by as much as 2 deg C and 1200J/kg respectively when horizontal convective rolls are present in the well-mixed boundary layer. This difference arises depending on whether the sounding was taken in the updraft or downdraft portion of a horizontal convective roll, the locations of which differ by a distance of a few kilometres. Of course, this would have greater significance for soundings taken in the afternoon, so may not be all that important for us here where soundings are in mid-morning and at night, but nevertheless, is interesting (well I think it is) to know. And one other thing, in the Sep 2 edition of New Scientist, a letter was posted by Charles Doswell and Erik Rasmussen regarding that proposal to use microwaves to destroy tornadic storms. Records are actually surprisingly few and far between. 1980 was warmer over a large part of the inland (also 1983 north of the Tropic of Capricorn). The main area where records seem to have been set is south-western Queensland and north-western NSW (e.g. Birdsville, Thargomindah and Tibooburra), although none of these have data from 1928, which was hotter than 2000 and 1980 at places like Charleville and Alice Springs. A record was also set at Amberley (29.9, 1.6 above the previous record set in 1980 and 1983). Amberley's data starts in 1941, but as the Brisbane RO data suggests that 1928 was unexceptional there and 1915 (another very warm September in many areas) was on a par with 1980, so this may well be a genuine 1-in-100 year observation. Interestingly, the difference between the coast and the inland was more than usual this year, with Brisbane Airport's 25.1 only ranking 5th in a 50-year record (1980 26.2, 1991 25.5, 1965 and 1983 25.2). Sydney's 22.7 ranks third in a 142-year record behind 1980 (23.3) and 1928 (23.1), whilst Canberra's 17.6 was equal 7th out of 62 years (the record is 19.5 in 1972, the only time it has topped 18). However, you must take into account the moisture profile as well all the way up into the atmosphere especially the lower levels up until 500hPa level. It is like taking a forecast sounding and comparing it with the region where LI's are lower. The lowest areas of LI don't always mean the best areas to chase. However, Michael I would think LI's of -8 would be ideal. I can say that plotting these variables of wind, moisture and the LI is all that I have used of late. I have referred to soundings but they are too infrequent and not widespread enough to use for storm chasing. If you want to use sounding information, let someone else relay the information to you once you are out on a chase if you are almost certain the conditions will be unstable and you need to travel long distances. Otherwise your chase may be over and you are playing catch the storm. That's my view anyway. Whilst it can be used succesfully, then I can't see why I should not use it. In this case, cold air outflow from the storms in the background has created a solitary wave (a wave with one hump) whose leading edge updraft forces air to rise, which subsequently cools, forming the smooth roll cloud. As the cloud passes, the back edge would look ragged as here the air is descending, which warms, and hence causes the cloud to dissipate. Once again, check out my page here at: http://www.maths.monash.edu.au/~robert/Thesis/introduction.html which has undergone a few modifications since I last posted this link, and shows how this cloud would have formed. Hi all.
The enlarging mid level cloud band extending from WA to Tasmania looks nice and worth keeping a check on over the next day or so, also a couple of early season storms south southwest of Darwin look ok too. regards Clyve H.
