Monthly Totals: June: 49.5mm July: 13.0mm August: 10.5mm September: 0.0mm October to date: 0.0mm A small possibility exists that we might actually get some in the next 2 days from storm activity (fingers crossed). Strangely, given the dry conditions, green tree frog (Litoria caerulea) activity has increased dramatically in the last couple weeks, reaching an all time high this evening with no less than 6 frogs on the back deck (one specimen was 25% larger than the max size according to the wildlife book). Do they know something I don't?? Actually I presume that they have been attracted to the moisture around the house due to overuse of watering systems and the pool. We are now a real oasis surrounded by krinkly dry scrub. We were very wind sensitive, when applying sprays, because of drift or should I say the chance of off target drift. What I noticed was on the days where there was a direction change say from NE to NW, with the approach of a front in Southern Australia, that every time the wind direction changed 5 degrees the wind speed would drop off then pick up in the new direction. Why? Do sailors notice this? All the records of this type date from July-September 1991. There were rainless periods of 55 days at Brisbane Airport (25 July- 17 September) and 64 days at the old Regional Office site (25 July- 26 Septemebr); the airport got 0.2 mm on September 18 that the city missed out on. Another notable run during this period was 0.6 mm at the airport over the 77-day period 12 July-26 September. (The airport got 0.8 on September 2 this year, so this run is not under threat). The annual totals on the Darling Downs will be interesting if this keeps up. Stanthorpe has only had 240mm so far this year (about 40% of normal); this is ahead of the 1902 figure of 204mm at the same stage (1902 being the benchmark for Queensland drought), but the Downs got vaguely reasonable rain in the last quarter of 1902 (Stanthorpe ended up with 408 that year), so it is possible that 2000 may come in as the driest year on record in that area. (On the other hand, 1902 was much drier in the Brisbane area than 2000 has been). We had 13mm in the 24 hours to 9 am this morning, most of that after midnight last night. After a quick glance at my records, it was the most rain I've observed at my place since the 4th of May, over a 24 hour period. Obviously, its been pretty dry. Currently its quite misty here and around 10 degrees (I haven't checked the screen temp, so that is from the verandah thermometer, accurate within a degree or so) Cheers, Lindsay Pearce +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "Met support" To: Subject: aus-wx: Lightning around Bathurst Date: Mon, 9 Oct 2000 15:06:30 +1100 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2919.6600 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com
Hi all,

There appears to be some quite active lightning to the southwest of Bathurst
this afternoon. Unfortunately, radar coverage of this area is not great, so
can anyone in the area provide any reports of heavy rain or other associated
weather around the Central Tablelands this afternoon? There also appears to
be some lightning around the Blue Mountains...could be interesting in Sydney
later on...

The low cloud has basically stayed with us all day with light to moderate intermittant showers producing 3.5mm from 9am to 5pm, today. Presently it is raining lightly again, becoming heavier. Our max today was 10.5 degrees. I just wanted to show everyone what it looks like, particularly because the photo used for the cover was done using one of Michael Fewings' (with his permission) superb lightning shots. You can check out all 4 pages here: http://www.maths.monash.edu.au/~robert/AtmosSci/pamphlet1.jpg http://www.maths.monash.edu.au/~robert/AtmosSci/pamphlet2.jpg http://www.maths.monash.edu.au/~robert/AtmosSci/pamphlet3.jpg http://www.maths.monash.edu.au/~robert/AtmosSci/pamphlet4.jpg Note that this has just come hot off the press and the URL mentioned on the first page (cover) does not work. Also of note is on page 3, half way down the page, on the right, which is a photo done by yours truly :-) (The full version can be found here http://www.maths.monash.edu.au/~robert/Pictures/1999/Jul/30jul2.jpg Also check out http://www.maths.monash.edu.au/~robert/Pictures/1999/Jul/30jul1.jpg http://www.maths.monash.edu.au/~robert/Pictures/1999/Jul/30jul3.jpg while you're in the vicinity) I think it's a good photo, but also they chose to put it in because I'm studying here. Looking back, I think I sort of erred in not asking if any Victorians had any good lightning images. I was in a bit of a hurry at the time, so I just browsed through the aussie lightning photos that were on the net and came up with those from Aussie Severe Weather and Michael Fewings.
