Hi all,

Just saw this on the abc website.....looks like we are in for a near average (maybe a little above average) WA TC season. With the October SOI at +10 I think there is a real possibility of a couple pre - Christmas TC Landfalls :)

From the ABC:

Several cyclones predicted for WA this season

The Bureau of Meteorology estimates Western Australia can expect between four and six cyclones this season, with at least two crossing the coast and one of them being severe.

A bureau spokesman says Broome and Derby are likely to face their most severe cyclone activity before Christmas and the Pilbara after the New Year.

The State Emergency Service has urged Broome residents to attend a public meeting next Thursday at the Cable Beach Club to find out the latest predictions on cyclone activity and how to be prepared.

A similar meeting will be held in Derby next Wednesday.

Regards
Jason

I think I have much more to learn about Australian severe weather setups than you have, Sir A. of B. I threw the S-word in yesterday to get the list out of its "severe hibernation," but it did not work that well. The main ingredient I liked about Friday was (a) the number 13 and (b) the progged 50-70 knot flow at 500 hPa. In particular if the boundary layer flow has an easterly component out of the departing high off the East coast, we would look at very good 0-6 km shear of 50+ knots. The threshold shear value of 40 knots is one of the best known discriminators for supercellular versus multicellular convective organisation. At 06Z/13 the 12Z/12 AVN has most of S QLD in the left exit region of the 500 hPa jet which *might* indicate mid-level subsidence and suppression of convection in the northern part of the good mid-level flow. The AVN has been consistent with its flow prediction, and I believe that flow will not be the problem (you would expect that from most potential early-season events). The lower levels concern me more than they did yesterday. The surface dewpoints along the extratropical East coast are mostly below 10 C except right along the coast. There is some indication of a moisture axis setting up around the Charleville (QLD) / Mitchell (QLD) area with an OK NNE flow at the surface and 10-15 C dewpoints working their way toward the NSW border. The Charleville 11Z/12 sounding shows a deep layer (200+ mb) of moderate moisture (>8 g/kg mixing ratio) capped securely around 610 mb. Lapse rates above the cap are bad. The trough needs to do A LOT OF lifting to weaken that cap and convert the piecewise dry-adiabatic lapse rates aloft into more continuous adiabatic lapse rates. > One of my main concerns is UDMS (Upside Down Moisture Syndrome :) it > looks like there'll be a lot of moisture in the upper levels and not > much moisture in the low levels. No doubt if it forms a fairly > widespread rainband, it'll help the SFC/PBL moisture levels as you've > mentioned - and that could prove to be something to assist us in weeks > to come. The 11Z/12 Charleville sounding dries up nicely above the 610mb inversion. The 11Z/12 Cobar (NSW) sounding has the inverted V profile at low levels overlaid by the moist adiabat you described above. I would NOT drive to Cobar today. 11Z/12 Moree (NSW) is fine as far as the mid-level moisture is concerned, but everything else is far from fine: no low-level moisture; too warm at 500mb and painful lapse rates due to 456.8 inversions. > The other concern I have, is what appears could end up being another > NW'ly feeding into the trough, bringing dry hot winds into the band. I > think that there will be convective 'explosion' though (not sure > where/when), as there is a strong upper level trough behind this - but > the cloud could be a bit annoying for us east coasters. A NW flow is not categorically bad. Aloft, a NW flow could bring in dry air or steeper lapse rates. On the surface it might contribute to a decent dryline as a focal boundary for convective initiation. I would pay a lot of attention to the 23Z/12 soundings w.r.t. mid-level lapse rates and low-level moisture. The early-season curse always appears to be flow-yes/CAPE-no/lapse rates-maybe. My **guess** for the sweet spot is the Charleville to Bourke corridor. Supercells are a bit of a question mark with the poor lapse rates and PBL moisture problems. The uncertainty in this forecast is, well, quite large at this point. Forecasting severe convection often needs data taken a few hours before the event, unless the event is synoptically evident a long time beforehand. Subject: aus-wx: Nacreous Clouds

Hello all,
While on my regular surfing trips across the waves of the internet, I came across a quite surprising and fascinating page concerning the stratospheric phenomena of Nacreous Clouds or otherwise known as Mother Of Pearl Clouds as part of one of the British Antarctic Survey's Ozone Depletion pages. For those who do not know, Nacreous clouds form in the stratosphere, at heights of between 10 and 30 km, when the temperature there falls below -80 degrees Celcius and are probably composed of ice particles with a liquid coating of nitric acid tri-hydrate. They appear bright because they are high enough to be illuminated by the sun long after local sunset and the pastel colours arise through diffraction or interference effects in much the same way that colours appear in a film of oil on a puddle of water. There is current research on the debate whether low ozone levels associated with ozone depletion are linked to the formation of this stratospheric phenomena.
The following link directs you to some of the most amazing photos and images of these clouds that appeared over Scotland in 1996.
This link directs you to some even better photos and close ups of Nacreous Clouds in there full effect.
Well, I hope you enjoyed these images as much as I did!

Cheers,
Deano

The risk drops to 5-10% by the end of October, which is why the 1998 frost (October 27) was so damaging. (Nothing wrong with playing those sorts of odds if the returns from the good years are enough to cover the bad ones - but I won't have a lot of sympathy if they start asking the government to bail them out, whereas for 1998's much more agriculturally exceptional event I would). The figures I've seen (on uk.sci.weather) include numerous 24-hour falls in the 100-millimetre range, with a peak of 144. It is very rare indeed for any lowland British station to get more than 50mm in 24 hours from a synoptic-scale system, so this is quite an exceptional event. (As with elsewhere in northern Europe, isolated heavier falls are possible in severe thunderstorms - when I was living there in May 1989 one place nearby had 150mm in two hours, ironically in the midst of a very dry month in which some of those stations that missed out on thunderstorms that day had a completely rainless month, extremely rare in that region). The culprit was a very deep cutoff low that has been stalled over the British Isles for the last couple of days. It got down to close to 960 hPa at its peak, although the central pressure had risen considerably by the time the worst of the rain came. (Given the low's peak intensity, I'm surprised at the comparative absence of reports of wind damage). All makes for quite an interesting week for English-speaking weather freaks, with the NZ system thrown in, along with an extremely severe early-season cold outbreak in the central US. Texas was particularly hard-hit by the latter - San Antonio, with a mean max at this time of year in the low 30s and an early-season record that previously stood at 18, had a maximum of 6 (!) early in the week. Given the exceptional heatwave they experienced in late August and early September, one would not have put much money on the next set of records being broken being ones for earliest-ever snowfall... So things such as website problems, suggestions for ASWA etc - should *not* be sent to the aussie-weather list. If you are unsure, just contact your state coordinator and they will steer you in the right direction.
