We'll see what happens, though this corner of town (Niddrie) has had a lot of fizzers lately, where other parts of town have had good storms. Last good one was the one which carried the Airport West tornado. That was one mean storm, and I was walking home from the tram stop, watching it approach and thinking there was something different about it. Ahh, that's the Murphy Effect, a well known property of many devices, which tends to miminise the probability of a desireable event occuring. There have been many documented cases of this effect, but it is still porrly understood. However, persistance can beat the Murphy Effect, as can someone else (e.g. a newcomer or non chasing family member, in the case of storms) holding the camera. This tends to cause a Reverse Murphy Effect, the intensity of which is directly proportional to the amount of frustration and / or embarrassment you are about to experience. ;-) (tongue planted firmly in cheek ;) ). Am I right or wrong? Can anybody help me? You mentioned three (out of many) ``ingredients'' conducive to deep moist convection. Surface fronts provide low-level lift and focal boundaries for convective initiation. High RH is increasing a parcel's buoyancy. The jet stream organises convection so that it becomes longer-lived and, in some cases, develops rotation. Transverse flows across accelerating/decelerating flow in jet streaks also lifts air from above. The latest forecast has widespread thunderstorms with locally heavy falls and flash flooding. Looking at the models eveything is looking pretty sweet. A very slow moving trough, associated with a low to our west is entering the state. More that 2 days of easterly and north easterly winds have pushed humidity levels quite high. An upper level low is also out west. LI's are forecast to go below -5 in western victoria this afternoon with CAPE of 1100 at 6Z. Visual Obs here today are mostly cloudy, mainly high level stuff with a bit of altocumulus around :) A fresh NE wind is blowing and this combined with the cloud has kept the minimum up near 19 overnight. Radar has some patchy rain to the W and NW of Melbourne. Lighting tracker shows active storms in NW Vic. My fear today is that the storms will degrade into areas of rain further east. Well it's my day off today and dont have access to a car so if someone is going to chase in Victoria get in contact with me. Ph. People are always saying how they want to chase when its good - well - its good - its damn good. There is a severe storm advice out for the NW of the state so going by that I would initially head for somewhere like Bendigo. A good place to stop and lookout is at Maldon. Methinks that there will be activity but confined to pulse storms over the ranges. These can unload large hail, but tend to be short lived. Get on a plane to the Gympie - Bundaberg -Rockhampton area for Thursday - Friday , the jet stream is perfect there.
