On the fifth day of Christmas mother nature gave to me... 5 thunder days 4 severe t'storm days 3 funnel clouds 2 wall clouds 1 possible tornado and a very very happy chas-er... (ok, so there's two single events there!) I apologise for my whacky sense of humour, I guess I'm not normal either after spending 4 days of chasing, not getting much sleep, driving 2200km in total...and I think now the owner of the petrol station I normally goto is planning an extension on their house :) I had a possible tornado today, a nicely descended funnel from the NW edge of a storm, where the guster curved around to the back of what may have been another WC (would make 3 WC's), but it was obscured by trees! There was another poss WC under one of Friday's storms, a similar feature with the guster wrapping around at the back with a lowering, there was rapidly rising motion in this one, but again trees in the way! (Would make 4 WC's...) Those are some of the highlights, plenty more to come, some nice gusters, updrafts, nice hail and general t'storm images (a few of supercells) - one of the wall clouds is also IMO quite spectacular, it's not large, but it's just very nice, and in the background you can see a nice hail foot :) Will get all of these reports up ASAP...put 6 rolls of film in for development this morning, but some more to put in tomorrow too! Wow - what a great couple of bangs to the season!!! Looking forward to many more chases to come! As well as the the great TDU chase for 2000 which starts next week! Those in Sydney not able to attend the Wednesday AMOS meeting and also the ASWA Saturday meeting will be sorry........ it will be uninterrupted by videos and more videos. This event I would argue has allowed those who have worked hard chasing in the not so good years to yield one of the most impressive system I have ever seen. I would place a bet with anyone for Sunday in particular that there were many wall clouds and tornados around. Just wait to see the footage... For those of the new ones on the list, I am glad this system has awoken you. I feel I am banging my head into the brick wall in trying to convince those who feel they have nothing to offer and think people will laugh at what they say. In fact, on the contrary, we welcome comments and stories from anyone about their experiences. Don't get worried about the jargon used - you will get used to it by simply asking questions. This includes the 22nd September 1999 event. This is quite an interesting topic. NOTICE OF NOVEMBER SCIENTIFIC MEETING AMOS Sydney will hold an additional scientific meeting on Wednesday 8 November, 2000. Venue Bureau of Meteorology Corner of 300 Elizabeth, and Foveaux Streets, Sydney. Time 600 pm. The program will include the Annual General Meeting, and election of the Centre Committee for 2001 (nominations now called for). This will be followed by a presentation by Dr. Tom Keenan who will speak on the First Forecast Demonstration Project of the World Weather Research Programme. The Committee will dine afterwards, and members are invited to join us. AMOS (Special) November Meeting 8 November 2000; Bureau of Meteorology *** Note AGM at 600pm, followed by talk *** First Forecast Demonstration Project of the World Weather Research Programme Dr. Tom Keenan. Leader, Mesoscale Meteorology Research Group, Bureau of Meteorology Research Centre In conjunction with the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), Australia, the World Weather Research Programme is conducting its first Forecast Demonstration Project (FDP) over the 3 month period August-November 2000 in association with Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The emphasis is on nowcasting and state-of-the-art and complementary WWRP nowcast systems have been integrated within the infrastructure and forecast process of the BoM Sydney forecast office. The aim is to enhance the provision of real time nowcast services provided by the BoM. Nowcast systems include, Generating Advanced Nowcasts for Deployment in Operational Land-Surface Flood Forecasts from the United Kingdom Meteorological Office (UKMO) and University of Salford, NIMROD developed by the UKMO, the National Center for Atmospheric Research Autonowcaster, the Warning Decision and Support System developed by the National Severe Storms Laboratory, the Canadian Radar Decision Support System developed by Atmospheric Environment Science in Canada, a polarimetric radar microphysical classification scheme developed by Bureau of Meteorology Research Centre and SpecPROG developed by Hydrology Branch of the BoM. The BoM is providing enhanced mesoscale observations from Doppler and polarimetric radars, wind profilers and automatic weather stations. These data are being linked with other standard sources and high-resolution numerical prediction information to feed the WWRP nowcast systems. A web-based guidance system with an animation facility is providing information on severe weather occurrence, rainfall and wind changes to forecasters. Enhanced nowcast products are being delivered to external clients using web-based techniques. Direct interaction between forecasters and WWRP system experts is occurring in an operational mode. Integral parts of the FDP involve the verification and impact studies under WWRP guidance to assess the value and impact of the improved services during the FDP. A WMO sponsored Training Workshop is be held from 30 October to 10 November 2000 in conjunction with the FDP to enable other WMO members to learn about the FDP activities. ----------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------- Jimmy Deguara Storm Chaser and Mathematics Teacher from Schofields, Sydney NSW Australia e-mail:jdeguara at ihug.com.au Web Page with Michael Bath Australian Severe Weather Home Page http://www.australiasevereweather.com President of the Australian Severe Weather Association http://www.severeweather.asn.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: NinnesM at franklins.com.au To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: aus-wx: 3rd November Sydney Storm Pics - Wall Cloud Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 02:48:09 +1100 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2650.21) Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi all, Just a quick post to let everyone know that my photos from the huge storm on Friday in Sydney are now online: http://crash.tig.com.au/~bueno/mal/swx/031100/031100.html In my opinion, the best ones are the wall cloud photos (see the 'strathfield*.jpg' series), in particular #1 and #2. This is common with many supercells. Browning referred this to as hail "falling in a mono-dispersed fashion". Typically, with the "classic" supercell, the largest hail stones will fall immediately adjacent to the wall cloud, especially on the south and southeast side (southern hemisphere), where there is little or no rain. This is because these hail stones are falling through updraft that prevents the rain from descending due to the small mass and slower decent of rain drops as compared to the large, heavy, rapidly descending hail stones. LP (Low Precipitation) supercells are associated with large hailstones falling from the anvil just down stream from the cumulonimbus tower (main updraft). With the HP (High Precipitation) supercell, the largest hail will also fall adjacent to the updraft, which will typically be in a semicircle from the southwest, west and northwest of the wall cloud (which marks the 'surface' roots of the updraft). Lightning struck 4QR again but alas I was too > slow on the SLR. One of these days ... It appears to me that this is not a pulse storm. The pulse storm is a storm that occurs in a light low-level wind field, a deep tropical-like environment of weak wind shear, and a storm that has a very short lifetime. The period of severe weather is brief and again short lived. Yes, the photo you ask about is that of a shelf cloud. Finally, the last few photos you show, are of an updraft base which is ingesting rain-cooled outflow air with high relative humidity. In fact, the cause of the wall cloud is the same, the updraft ingesting low-level (near surface), high RH air and marks the base of the major updraft. In fact, it is not unusual that when you are directly beneath a wall cloud, the winds are very light or calm. Most all the air flow is upward rather than lateral in motion. (This is, of course, the case unless a tornado may develop adjacent to the updraft-downdraft interface but beneath the wall cloud edge). Les ************************ Leslie R. At one stage there was a rotating lowering that looked just like the tornado Ben Quinn saw. It went almost all the way to the ground. Also a while later there was a large funnel cloud(i think), It would have been about 100m across decending from the shelf cloud, half way to the ground. It then eventually dispipated. Unfortunately there was no film in my camera :-( David +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Originating-IP: [203.54.90.28] From: "S G" To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: aus-wx: Good prospects for t'storms in Adelaide tomorrow Date: Tue, 07 Nov 2000 16:27:04 CST X-OriginalArrivalTime: 07 Nov 2000 05:57:05.0123 (UTC) FILETIME=[8E43D330:01C0487F] Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hey guys, Well the weather for tomorrow in Adelaide looks interesting with showers and possible thunderstorms developing. Unstable middle level cloud has developed in the west and is expected to interact with an infeed of low level moisture from the north, combined with very warm temperatures it sets up some very good prospects for widespread t'storm activity, especially over the north, central and eastern districts of SA. Hopefully this low level moisture will reach down as far as Adelaide at least. Thunderstorm activity could even last into the night before the trough passes through at about midnight, this could see some good lightning displays. The worrying part of the forecast is the possible word mentioned for many towns for t'storms. The good sign is that BOM has said it expects the t'storm activity to increase as it moves in from the west which is good plus the is still the risk of mildew forming an graps which shows moisture levels should be high. Can only hope tomorrow is the day finally. Please could someone write and tell me what they think will happen I feel like I'm talking to myself a lot when it comes to the weather in Adelaide. I do understand there are not many people on this list from Adelaide though. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
