Keep in mind that mid-level troughs (4 to 8 km above the surface) will sometimes become so strong that they will "cut off" or develop into a closed vortex or circulation that can cause showers and storms embedded in the flow to actually move counter to the way they would "normally" do. In other words these embedded showers will move around the closed rotational circulations. Les ************************ Leslie R. Hi all,

Unfortunately I didn't see any of the anvils, but fortunately I had a dinner here in Horsham last night, and on the way home was greeted with a few nice lightning shows visible to the North. Once again, I were out with the camera and talking to Jane on the mobile. Hasn't been too bad though....4 days and 3 of those have had storms :-) Are you guys sure you all wanna drive to Qld? Seems like TD2K is happening in W NSW and NW Vic atm :0)

I saw some very nice looking clouds tonight, at about 6:30pm.  Couldn't tell
because of some patchy cloud a bit closer to Lilydale, but the one I saw
looked like it had a very nice dome forming at the western end.

There is an axis of particularly rich moisture extending through W QLD into NW NSW. A nearly stationary cut-off low aloft is associated with widespread clouds and rain from E QLD through coastal NSW into S NSW. A dry slot is working its way E along the QLD/NSW border which should destabilise the very moist airmass in NW NSW and SW QLD. This airmass continues to be ``fed'' by NE trajectories. These trajectories are a mixed bag as they are precip-moistened (good) and precip-cooled (bad). The +12 h prognosis of the 18 UTC AVN suggests a region of enhanced westerly flow (20-30 kts) at mid-levels. With NE surface winds of 15 kts the shear is marginal for supercells. Mid-level lapse rates and the absence of a cap are also of concern with a convectively overturned airmass. Nevertheless, NW NSW and SW QLD would be my *guess* for today's East Australian ``sweet spot.'' I hope someone will keep an eye on it, Harald -- ------------------------------------------- Harald Richter NOAA/National Severe Storms Laboratory 1313 Halley Circle Norman, OK 73069, U.S.A. ph.: (405) 366-0430 fax: (405) 579-0808 email: hrichter at enterprise.nssl.noaa.gov web: http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/~hrichter ------------------------------------------- +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Authentication-Warning: zeppo.maths.monash.edu.au: robert owned process doing -bs Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2000 11:50:36 +1100 (EDT) From: Robert Goler X-Sender: robert at zeppo.maths.monash.edu.au To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: aus-wx: 4 days of chasing Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi all Well, I'm finally back in Melbourne after chasing Fri -> Mon, and what an absolutely enjoyable time I had. Storms wherever I went (even blind Freddy could have found storms :) ) which was fortunate for me just starting out in this game (my 3rd chase). Just some brief notes here, which will be more detailed, with photos, on a webpage to come. 12 rolls of film, 3800km travelled. No tornadoes, funnels or hail :( but plenty of lighting, thunder, heavy rain. On Friday I was around the Hamilton/Mortlake area in SW Vic which I mentioned in an earlier email. I returned to Melbourne thinking the action would drift more eastward, however the forecasts showed it still out to the northwest. Saturday I headed out to around the Sea Lake area, and whilst looking at some storms on the side of the road, was unexpectedly visited by Chris and Macca on their chase. They passed on a few helpful comments (7 funnels and a possible tornado in a couple of hours......bastards! :-) ), and I decided to head my way as there was no way to communicate between us so I figured it would be safer to travel alone (ie avoid collision due to sudden and frequent stopping etc). As for the storm complex that Macca reported that was south of Sea Lake, I was just to the south west at the time and saw/experienced the lightning, thunder, gust front (I'm no expert at judging winds but perhaps around 60km/h? which left quite a bit of tree litter on the road (small branches, bark)), and heavy rain. I stayed the night at Swan Hill and had no idea what the forecast was for Sunday, but I assumed the action would've moved east and perhaps north. So into NSW I went around Deniliquin, Hay and Balranald. And what marvellous roads, with clear views all around (ie no trees along the roads to block the view). On two occasions I saw turtles (live) sitting in the middle of the road. What's the deal with that? Had an absolute drenching (in my terms) in Balranald around 2:30pm (40-100mm/hr for 10 mins) which resulting in the water extending at least 1m from the gutters on all the roads that I drove on, through the town. If I went with my gut feeling and went back to the east from here I would have saved myself 300km of travel on this day and been right in the mix of the storms, which was between Hay and Balranald. Instead I went back to Swan Hill where it seemed the cumulus congestus was dying out before glaciation. And there is something _seriously_ wrong with galahs. (Clyve may relate to this one). Every normal bird, when they see a car coming, flies off perpendicular to the road. Galahs, obviously hard of hearing since they have to sqawk so loud, wait until the last minute to take off, then fly parallel with the road, and adopt their natural behaviour of trying to veer off at the last minute. However, they completely misjudge the speed of the vehicle (in this case me), and get smacked. Well I only hit one (and strangely I ducked as it hit the windshield....that doesn't help), and after this I made sure to slow down and toot my horn before any flock of galahs. Also, I'm assuming that their flying patterns are restricted because they take off as a flock, which enhances their chances of getting hit. Anyway, I travelled to Albury Wodonga on Sunday night where I saw the lightning display to the north that Bussie mentioned in his email, and stayed the night there. Monday was spent travelling north around the Lockhart, Narrandera area. Plenty of storms with another big complex which developed to the northeast and looked nice. Some scuddy lowerings which looked interesting, and based on the fact that I was in the midst of reloading film into my camera and hence couldn't take a photo, I would probably say that this was a funnel :) (damn Murphy!). After this passed, I wasn't sure what to do, ie chase this system which was moving to the northwest, it seemed, or head east where I could see some cumulus through the precipitation, hoping to see further developing cells. I headed east which was a bad choice as nothing developed, and in hindsight I suppose that this storm complex would have altered the atmosphere in such a way as to 'dampen' out any further convection for the time being. And this was the end of my chase. It was hard to call it an end here as I saw what the forecast was for the next few days and arrrgggghhhh! But work was calling. I learnt quite a bit out there going solo, and my impatience and failure to listen to my gut feeling probably extended my journey by 800-1000km. However, the extent of the storm activity meant that no matter where I went, there were storms to be seen. However, for those people who have never chased before and would like to, I would probably recommend doing an 'apprenticeship' (ie tag along) with a more experienced storm chaser. That way you get to learn how they 'read' the sky and see what they look for to predict where the next action will come up (thanks to Macca and Chris for their insight). Also, it may pay to be in contact with people so they can tell you where the _best_ action is. [And Dennis, I have no problems if you want to organise a chase together.] One final note I should make. When hiring a car and they say 'unlimited km', it really means there _is_ a limit (a bit like that unlimited download thing (with a limit), offered by internet providers which some people mentioned earlier). In my case the limit was 3000km in a month. But the service guy was cool since I had no idea about it. Best lightning seen for ages. Mostly CC but the odd CG. Lighning all over the place. Thunder not all that loud but quite rumbly. No need for a chase as it came overhead and good vantage of storm was obtained here at home and from my roof. I managed to get lots of video footage of the storm. No tornadic symptons or anything as such noted in footage but there could be depending on reports. There was not much wind during storm and even backed to the ESE after passing which was quite unusual. It seems to be, at the moment,(and hopefully) a perfect scenario for thunderstorms for Canterbury and eastern regions of the South Island with the anticyclone where it is in the Tasman Sea and a disturbed SW flow covering NZ on it's SE flank. Nothing more is forecasted this week but then again you never know what may happen. It's about time too. I hope it is making up for lost time as we have had recently a thunderstorm drought here in ChCh. BRING THEM ON . . . as they say !!
