Hi,
I've just returned from a weekend in Tamworth, is it wet up there with 103mm falling in the last 7 days to 9am this morning (19/11) with further falls today (November median rain is 63.1mm). The Peel had minor flooding at Tamworth this morning which closed many low lying roads.  Meanwhile the Mooki (which joins the Namoi just above Gunnedah) is apparently in moderate to major flood at Breeza (132mm in the past 7 days, 32 in the 24hrs to 9am), the peak expected to reaching Gunnedah on Monday and further downstream later in the week.
We drove to Manilla (north of Tamworth) on Saturday and on heading back to Tamworth in the afternoon encountered some amazingly heavy rain which produced localised flash flooding and made for an interesting drive.

The area was to be drought declared only a few weeks ago, so the rain has been quite handy for some, but a disaster for others, with the wheat harvest underway.

Heading back to Sydney today through the Hunter there was torrential rain in the Murrurundi area.  At the top of the Dividing range the water was thundering down the creek at the side of the road.  40 millimetres has been recorded there in the 6 hours to 9 pm today (Sunday) and 78mm in the 24hrs to 9am.

Overall a fairly interesting weekend, no storms but some severe weather nonetheless.

I had two people ring me and they both said that they reckon it was on the ground for the about the same period you mentioned. Apparently a funnel also around the Beechworth area around about the same time. The one (supposedly) on the ground was viewed by someone in a nearby town (Wahgunyah) and was clearly visible over the Warby ranges, in the Glenrowan/Wangaratta area for a good ten to 15 minutes. The second call I got was from my Brother in law who was coming from Melbourne at the time and he said the same thing. i.e. it looked like it was on the ground just to the west of Glenrowan. Even myself looking from here thought I saw a funnel forming but lost track of it due to the showers etc around at the time. By the time I'd received the phone calls and went to look, it was all over. Was some very heavy rain about that evening and the sky was as black as the inside of a cow :-) Bussie (NE Victoria) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ira Fehlberg" To: Sent: Monday, November 20, 2000 12:04 AM Subject: aus-wx: nader report i got, Vic ppl to check out? > > Hi all, > i just got a phone call from a mate of mine holidaying in vic atm. It's a more common event than one might think - 31 instances in the last 30 years (most recently March this year, and October and December 1999). This includes eight instances of 100+ at one or more stations in every rainfall district (many of the forecast districts that Don mentioned are subdivided into two rainfall districts). No November instances in the last 30 years, though. January 1974 was particularly impressive, with at least 200mm being recorded somewhere in every district, and 250 in every district except the South Coast and Southern Tablelands. Murrurundi and Tambar Springs are both over 300 for the month now; no wonder there are flooding problems in the Peel/Namoi and Hunter catchments. Numerous stations have set November monthly records, and some are starting to get within striking distance of all-time monthly records (many set during the great floods of February 1955). Hi to all the TDU2K chasers,

Here is the latest flood warning for the Charleville and Cunnamulla area. Looks like chasing around this area may become very restricted with the forecast of MAJOR flooding in the Cunnamulla area by the weekend. There is also a major flood warning for the Macintyre River around Goondiwindi so that would be another area to stay away from. Basically the whole NW Slopes and Plains district of NSW is a nightmare at the moment with all the flooding around. Here at TWC we have been covering the Tamworth floods in detail and the situation is certainly not good there.

Quick update on Anthony's crew(4:30pm Monday)

They are at Miles in SE Qld, and have seen a mesocyclone on a storm between Roma and Miles, making it a supercell. Also observed was a rotating wall cloud and a funnel. They managed to get ahead of this storm and apparently it was very nice! Now, they are observing another storm to the ESE of there, of which I won't repeat how Anthony descirbed it, apart from to say that there was beautiful backshearing on it, heaps of mammatus and a cumuliform anvil.

Looks like SE Qld ended up being a bit better than I was expecting...

Hi Everyone,
We've had a very uncomfortable day here in Townsville,(Kelso).
Still at present it's 4.00pm,and the temperature is still 33d, the humity is 61%,& the bar is 1006.At the moment we have quite a lot of storm activity building up out to the west and south of us.Looks aas thought we could be in for exciting night. My radar has been down for two days, so it's good to now just where all the storms are forming and where the lightning is. But it's not as bad as some places in the state-nation at the moment. Husbands going out fishing out to the reef on the weekend so hes keeping a close eye on weather conditions at the moment.
Keep dry everyone,

Regards,
Evelyn

The Storm near Williamstown I got near too, bit of Thunder, lightning and heaps of rain, was really black rain curtain, so was red intensity easy, it also stayed that way for quite some time. All up around me there were about 4 cells all dropping heaps of rain, only one of them looked to be dropping hail, I have photo's of that too. Plus numerous other Anvils around the place. Best time to observe the Leonids here in Oz would be 2001 and 2002, in 2001 the radiant (point in space where the meteors seem to be coming from) will be directed at the Australian area, so if your out early as Leo rises, there should be an awesome show of the Earth Grazers, way better than 1998 (where I saw approx 200 or more in a matter of 2 or less hours), according to meteor forecasts. About half of them show a very nicely formed shelf cloud, one of the better examples I have seen in a long time. The lowering is a little difficult to tell exactly what it is due to the distance from where the photo was taken and also the graininess of the shot, but given the observations of rotation, sounds like a possible mesocyclone...not sure though. Matt PS - Anthony's crew has met up with Jimmy's mob at Chinchilla in SE Qld, and they are sitting outside their cabins watching a lightning show from a storm about 200km away near Roma. Tomorrow looks like a semi-rest day with a fair bit of cloud coming across from SA but there may still be some stuff around, probably more likely around NW NSW, we'll see what the cloud is doing in the morning. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: tlang at freeway.apana.org.au (Tony Langdon) Date: 20 Nov 00 22:10:53 +1000 Subject: Re: aus-wx: cb radios dennis Organization: Fidonet: Freeway Usenet <=> FTN gateway To: aussie-weather at world.std.com X-MDaemon-Deliver-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hello clyve! 20 Nov 00 10:57, you wrote to All: ch> In respect to channel 33 we use low range AM not UHF,my cb is a uniden ch> 510xl am, so i cant see how his would interfere with UHF ch 33.for ch> repeating requirements. regards Clyve H.
