Don't forget that due to the internet cable being killed, this is causing Net havoc. I knon that both these sites are within Australia, but the re-routing of that traffic through other means is causing many things to run very slowly, and occasionally timeout. At home, I'm ok (my ISP goes via satellite) but at work, where I believe they use a Telstra line, things are much slower than normal. At work I even have a hard time getting on to Hotmail. Hopefully this will all go away in a week or so. Until then, maybe try accessing it at odd times (early morning etc.,) maybe with less Australian traffic running around you'll find you'll be able to access those sites. Hope it helps, Simon http://www.tastyworm.com ============ From: "bussie" Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com To: "weather list" Subject: aus-wx: Problems Date: Wed, 22 Nov 2000 19:26:19 +1100 Is there anyone else having problems accessing the ASWA site and the weather company etc. Haven't been able to hook on for the last day or so. One day (hopefully before 2100) other parts of Australia may be so blessed. Australia's poor (for the information age) telecommunications infrastructure becomes very obvious when having to wait excrutiating long periods to download satpix or model runs. Even with a supposed 56k modem and a mainstream ISP. I have had problems accessing the ASWA (and other sites) periodically in the last few days. Speeds are faster now than earlier in the week. The media reports that the cable link near Singapore that was damaged earlier this week will be fixed by Tues/Wed of next week. The previous record is 13.3; 2000 is currently sitting on 15.2 (and should rise further given the forecast for the next few days, and in particular the strong possibility of 20+ minima on Tuesday and Wednesday). It is also in with a chance of being the largest mean minimum temperature anomaly on record for any month, being 4.2 above the long-term mean (the current record is 4.1 in February 1997). Assuming 2000 does set a record, six of the twelve monthly records (February, June, August, September, November and December) will have been set in the last ten years, with four in the last four. Hobart (11.9, previous record 11.1 in 1987) should also set a record, and Canberra (10.8, previous record 11.5 in 1959) is in with a chance; they would need to average about 14 for the rest of the month, which is possible. Melbourne's record November streak of 14+ minima is at 16, and counting. There has been only one sub-10 minimum for the month so far (and unlikely to be another), below the previous record of 3 (1973, 1979, 1995). Another indication of 'global warming', a popular topic of discussion within this list. What we lack here is knowing the cause. If we are to believe the climatic record, the earth has warmed in periods past significantly faster when man had nothing at all to do with it. He was not around! So, we really do not know the actual cause of this episode. In fact, there are indications that man may well not be the cause. Thus, in my opinion, we do not know enough about the cause to make drastic changes to our lives and society in order to curb the warming. Moreover, why should we? If evolution is a fact, we need not worry, living organisms will simply adapt and develop new cooling system designs. The very large quantities of new information for these designs will "spontaneously arise". We need not worry about species dying out but rather, we can watch them adapt. After all, Gould hypothesizes 'stochastic evolution or punctuated equilibrium' to explain the lack of transitional fossil records. Supposedly evolution took place in the past (and will take place now) so rapidly that there remains no fossil records for the changes in organisms. We may be entering a very interesting period of life on this earth. Les ************************ Leslie R. Actually, Melbourne has a significant urban heat island, so that record can't be attributed solely to global warming (although, given that the best estimate of Melbourne's urban heat island is 1.3-1.5 degrees and 2000 looks like beating the highest value prior to the stabilisation of the urban heat island in ~1970 by 2.5-3 degrees, it would most probably have set a record even in the absence of the city).
