This list is for anybody interested in weather, irrespective of whether they have studied meteorology or not. You also learn pretty quickly with weather than no matter how much you know the atmosphere can still make you look pretty silly, by doing the unexpected. A prime example is the thunderstorm which just went through Melbourne at ~8:10am this morning, which was totally unforecasted! Working in BOM, I was just a tad concerned driving to the station this morning at 7:30pm to hear the duty forecaster saying on the radio that we could expect a fine day, while said thunder cloud was developing before my eyes... Anyway, we have now had three thunder days for the month in Box Hill, making for the most activity since February. It really has been a pretty interesting month all-up, with very persistent warm humid easterly conditions, with frequent convective activity. The result of these persistent patterns has been an extraordinary warming of Port Phillip Bay through the month to almost "tropical" temperatures (see http://www.earthsci.unimelb.edu.au/~awatkins/temps.html ), and a rainfall gradient from greater than 100mm of rain for the month in Melbourne's northern suburbs to around 20mm in the southern suburbs, where sea breezes have inhibited convection (for those who don't know, this is a near reversal of the climatological gradient). Sel,

I don't think there has been anything official about the BBQ in December. I'll be flying up on the 9th and staying at Anthony's, for the BBQ on the 10th, but I am not sure of location or anything like that.

It is now a constant light rain, very humid, and the wind turning from the south to more of a ENE direction. Possibly it isn't over yet, noticed that there is some more dieing activity down towards Bowral/Roberston area. Hey List!!

A report has just come in from my mother who is driving back to Sydney from tammworth. She has just driven through Muswellbrook where she has described damage everywhere and hail drifts on the side of the road of over a foot deep. She has driven past on coming vehicles with smashed windows, and east of Muswellbroook there seemed to be massive damage where there where trees down everywhere and 'half a house' spread out onto the road. She said police had closed sections of the road. At this moment she is heading for Singleton. Seems like my mother is sharing the spirit of the TDU2k.

Having seen this monster on the radar I am not in the least surprised - I don't think I can remember seeing a storm with a bigger area of 100+ echoes. The line of activity in the eastern Victorian mountains looks interesting too (although it doesn't have much to hit other than Omeo), as does its extension through the southern Riverina and a cell inland from Coffs Harbour. Higher SSTs are possible in enclosed bodies of shallow water, of which the Persian Gulf is the classic example. (Whilst I haven't seen either cited in this context, I imagine the Red Sea and the Gulf of California would be good candidates, too). Dewpoint measurements are notorious for 'spiking' upwards if, for example, the reservoir of water for the wet-bulb thermometer runs dry. A good way to pick this up is the presence of a significant diurnal range in the dewpoint - all other things being equal, the dewpoint should have little or so diurnal range (leaving aside air mass changes, as can arise from seabreezes). Sydney's midday dewpoint of 21 equals its November record, and Canberra's 18 is its highest since 1959. Melbourne also narrowly missed its November record of 20 yesterday in the hours before the change. There was some nice thunder around, with one loud enough to rattle the bathroom window whilst I was showering. I was quite surprised (among others I talked to here at uni) to have thunderstorms around this morning, which brings me to the point of this email. What kicked them off? See http://www.maths.monash.edu.au/~robert/Weather/2000_11_29/VicIR0430_0930EDT.gif for an ir loop of them forming, and a continuation here: http://www.maths.monash.edu.au/~robert/Weather/2000_11_29/VicIR0830_1330EDT.gif I originally thought it may have been through forced lifting due to the passage of the fronts. But looking at the MSL at 5am EDT http://www.maths.monash.edu.au/~robert/Weather/2000_11_29/MSL0500EDT.gif showed that they would have been well passed by 8am. Looking at the IR loop closely, one could see the original cell starting off to the northwest of Melbourne and drifting southeastward, before firing over the Gippsland region. Could it be that the southerly flow that was present over this region, which incidently began last evening, provided the extra low level moisture (albeit cool) to fuel these storms? Looking at last nights Melbourne sounding (blue lines): http://www.maths.monash.edu.au/~robert/Weather/2000_11_29/melbsounding.gif seems to show some instability in the upper regions (ie keep in mind that the theoretical parcel profile is drawn on this chart using the red curves, while for the blue curves, _I think_ it would be shifted more to the right). So once the air is lifted above ~600-700hPa, it would continue to rise. So what would have provided the lifting from the surface? Perhaps low level convergence in the Latrobe Valley via katabatic drainage??? Although, the Vic observations (Gippsland region) http://www.maths.monash.edu.au/~robert/Weather/2000_11_29/Vic_obs.html show a mild night in this region, so perhaps this might not be the initiator. It also mentions a storm between Bombala and Bega. For consistency, I would have also thought that specific mention be made of the storm to the south of Wagga (although with the Wagga radar dropping out for wind finding, its current position and strength as shown on radar may not be accurate). From Canberra the anvils (and cells rising underneath) are clearly visible stretching across the southern sky. One other question, does anyone know why the latest NSW STA is still labelled "Severe Thunderstorm Advice 1" on the web even though it is at least the 3rd (or 4th??)version with new districts included and other ones deleted. Others less fanatical ;-) than members of this list might think it is the same warning they may have seen around lunch-time today (now VERY out of date). As I understand it, this labelling is used to provide for the case where there might be two STAs valid simultaneously in different areas of the state (in which case they're labelled Advice 1 and Advice 2). The 23z sounding profile you link to does however indicate that a parcel of air at around 800hpa would have great buoyancy given any sort of trigger - perhaps one of those mentioned above?). The sounding also shows that the southerly has brought in cooler air that is capped by a strong inversion at 900hpa and would not be interacting with the air at higher levels. Also keep in mind that the 23z sounding is 11pm in Greenwich, UK or 10.00am Eastern Australian Summer Time. The red lines are from the latest sounding, the blue lines are from last nights sounding (useful to see how the profile is changing) and the theoretical parcel line is the grey line (based on the expected maximum temperature). Cheers, Patrick Looking at last nights Melbourne sounding (blue lines): http://www.maths.monash.edu.au/~robert/Weather/2000_11_29/melbsounding.gif seems to show some instability in the upper regions (ie keep in mind that the theoretical parcel profile is drawn on this chart using the red curves, while for the blue curves, _I think_ it would be shifted more to the right). So once the air is lifted above ~600-700hPa, it would continue to rise. So what would have provided the lifting from the surface? Perhaps low level convergence in the Latrobe Valley via katabatic drainage??? This is unusually short - perhaps the proximity of some pretty impressive storms re-ordered priorities? You can tell when it goes off-line by the colour of the background. When the Wagga radar goes off-line the backgound just to the north of Griffith becomes a lighter shade of brown (indicating that it is now out of radar range). I only noticed this myself a while ago when a decent band of storms was heading east from Wagga towards Canberra. They looked very significant on the radar and then suddenly disappeared. By this time I could also see the storms with my own eyes and I know they had not disappeared - it was the radar that had. You can see the down times of the regional radars on the BOM's site at(http://www.bom.gov.au/weather/radar/ ). New radars in nthn Victoria and Captains Flat should go a long way to plugging some of the current holes in SE Aust. When I first went out, I saw some interesting lowerings, a bit like the one Tony Middleton got a photo of. Very skinny, ropy looking lowering. Also had a bit of a rotating wall cloud, but no funnels dropped from that. I was right under it at Chirnside park as it seemed to strengthen considerably. But then it seemed to die off around 7:00pm. It started up again around 8pm, so I went back out to Chirnside Park for a look and saw that it was further SE than I thought, but I still got a couple of good CC's right over the top of me and people driving past yelling at me to get out of the lightning. I then went to Kilsyth to the football ground which has quite a nice view of Mt Dandenong. I set up the camera and took a few photos, one of which has hopefully got an incredible CC that seemed to rise up from Mt Dandy and twist around in the sky. I am dropping the film in tonight, so I should have them back tomorrow. Will let you all know how they come out. Thanks to Paul Graham, who was guiding me to the storm, I got up right under the right mover east of Maitland although it was dissipating at that stage. Make no mistake this storm was quite massive, CG lightning was very intense, although there was no hail at my location. The big dissapointment was (i) the area in which I intercepted it (smack bang on the F3) and (ii) the fact that it was a case of 'Gorillas in the mist' (as Michael Thompson so aptly described these situations) - too much low cloud and (iii) since Paul could not chase I was forced to go solo and so missed what would have been some excellent daytime lightning footage which would have been had on the FWY. Except in Nowra. Looking at every available format I can lay my hands on tonight(292143NOV00) everything seems to skip/miss/die/divert/veer from a corridoor that starts from JB, goes to Glb and then turns on a angle to Dubbo. There is activity on both sides of this that the list has been going off about all day. Nix here. Three rumbles this morning at 5:45(me in shower), warm and muggy all day, STA's & STW's all over the place, lightning tracker going off. What do I get ? What bloody Paddy shot at.
