Satellite imagery (my primary verification tool for convection per se) revealed a weak band of convection NE of Kalgoorlie around 5-6 Z. Nothing too long-lived. The 00Z Brisbane sounding hinted towards it, and the 11Z sounding made it painfully clear. A very strong lid formed by 11Z around 750mb preventing any deep moist convective overturning. Despite ESE surface flow the surface dewpoints decreased monotonically as you went inland from the SE QLD coastline. My guess is that the trajectories around the H were descending more and more into the interiour of the continent, and that they were building the lid over Brisbane to keep certain golfers happy. The upper-PBL moisture also decreased rapidly between 00Z and 11Z despite SE flow. The AVN did not capture the lid and its effects. The forecast for 06Z showed precip all along the NE NSW/SE QLD coast. This is *not* the first time I have seen a model with "lid problems." In fact, I wasn't even aware it was there until Ben pointed it out to me on the webcam.(He lives in Brisbane and me in Sydney!) This was on a very heavy coastal shower, which incidentally, was only showing the weakest radar signal possible, not an uncommon occurrence with Sydney coastal showers. There was no lightning however, that I saw. There were strong winds around later that evening, although I don't know of any specific reports from that shower. I believe this shower formed on the leading edge of the thermal trough that moved into Sydney on Friday afternoon, which subsequently produced numerous hailstorms, some severe, across the city during the afternoon and evening, and may have been the first indication of the rapid destabilisation that was to follow in the middle levels. Greetings all from a cloudy (and cold!  Well, I think it's cold - Macca does not) Melbourne

Macca and I are heading back out for another week of chasing, after a short visit to Melbourne for a few family commitments we'll be off again!  The past two weeks and a bit have been absolutely phenomenal to put it bluntly!  Two big systems, of which any one of these systems by itself would have been better than all of last years two weeks combined.  Numerous supercells, funnels, WC's and a tornado (shame this isn't plural).  I know that Macca and I have learnt a hell of a lot over the past 2 weeks, it's been an absolutely fantastic experience!  You know when you've had a successful chase though, when you're absolutely buggered and get to the point of saying "geez I hope nothing happens today, I'd like a rest."

However, in saying this, I would like to see the following week being progged to be a tad more interesting - but it looks like there'll be a broad inland trough sitting over central NSW, so hopefully we might get something interesting here.  It'd be better if it hadn't dried out so much though over the inland!  But as the famous saying goes "we'll see what happens."  We're going to head off into southern NSW today...we had aimed to leave early, but yesterday being our "day of rest", ended up not going to bed until after 3am :)

We have something like 15hrs of video footage, and over 800 photos so far...as I said, it's been just fantastic!  Not just confined to storm chasing too...we've done some sunset, fog and flood chases too :)

Anyway...I hope everyone is gearing up for a huge week starting from Dec 10, as TD2K finishes then, so there's bound to be a big system of supercells come through during the week after that!

Time to finish the repairs on the car (courtesy of NSW roads)...and depart for another week!  We both look forward to catching up with everyone in the next week!

This is common, almost standard for coastal showers (in QLD anyway). Most of the time the showers around my location will look decent for less than 5 minutes once they reach peak intensity, then collapse quite quickly. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Leslie R. After starting at Quirindi we followed the line from 12.30pm to 9pm, only to be finally chased into retirement by a weak cell raining on us. We were just 2km NW of Gunnedah around 6pm when a severe microburst let loose, at one stage I simply had to pull over as the rain and wind was simply impossible to see through. In the space of 30 seconds the winds backed 180 degrees bringing small 1-2cm hail horizontal, the hail left clean spots over my otherwise filthy car. Jane O'Neill has some video of the storm, my favourite piece is watching how the rain was literally blown off her windscreen whilst stopped. It was if she was doing 100kph with a good dose of rainX on the screen. We encountered large tree branches over the road just 500m from where we stopped. To be fair to the BOM they simply would not have the budget to prepare such forecasts. I am sure there are some BOM staff who would love to be paid to do so. The government would have the purse strings pulled tighter each year, yet the BOM would be expected to produce more.

On the other hand I have and always will be critical of the typo's and spelling mistakes.

Michael

eam of from our Bureau. IMO the Bureau of Meteorology is a totally inadequate service and the amount of spelling mistakes and incomplete forecasts I have seen lately is a total disgrace. I mean dont they ever proof read or spell check anything. You just dont send out forecasts with temperatures and the like missing.

Just come home for a day or 3 during this quiet period hoping for some good action later this week, we will see what happens. I hope everyone has had some good storms the last few weeks, I know there were many opportunities for people to chase, so I hope everyone got out and about at some stage! Photos/Reports and all the rest will be up in a few weeks. Since Jason is not on this list, i am posting on his behalf. Some were over water, others may have crossed over onto land. Most lasted around 2 minutes, before contracting into the base, only to be replaced by another. They were all photographed between 4 and 4:30pm Darwin time - i don't suppose anyone has any radar around this time? I have uploaded a couple of pics of one of the waterspouts - they were taken about 20 seconds apart, using around 300mm of zoom in very high humidity, so the quality is not the best, but it is obviously a waterspout http://bsch.simplenet.com/ben/darwin_nader.jpg http://bsch.simplenet.com/ben/darwin_nader2.jpg These are in a temporary directory (all files in /ben/ are temporary actually), so please don't link to them yet. These and many many more will be added to the TD2kNT section sometime tomorrow. I have also uploaded the 23z Darwin sounding http://bsch.simplenet.com/ben/sounding.gif +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------
