Communications have been lost to a remote Aboriginal community in the cyclone's path. The eye of Tropical Cyclone Sam hit the WA coast about 7:00pm AWST, battering the Bidyadanga community south of Broome with winds of up to 280 kilometres an hour. The weather bureau's Linda Patterson says there is more to come. "It's going to be a while yet before conditions ease in any part of the coast where Sam is making a landfall," she said. While hundreds have been evacuated from Bidyadanga, the State Emergency Service has confirmed that 30 residents have elected to stay and have denied earlier reports that they were forced to remain, after a bus evacuating them, broke down. Emergency crews and medical staff will travel to the community at first light to assess the damage. Meanwhile, police in Broome say they are concerned for the welfare of three young men who left Bidyadanga earlier today in a bid to escape the cyclone. They say a search will be conducted at first light for the trio, who left the community by car but failed to arrive in Broome. Police say they are concerned the three may have become bogged on a dirt track. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "Adam Mayo" To: "Australian Severe Weather Mailing List" Subject: aus-wx: Great Lightning Display Date: Fri, 8 Dec 2000 23:30:38 +1100 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2615.200 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi Everyone, At present we can see a great lightning display of the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Jason Rainforest and myself chased around the QLD/NSW border and the southern suburbs of Brisbane, scoring a spectacular storm near Murwillumbah (just south of the QLD border), and then another spectacular line of storms in the southern suburbs of Brisbane. The Murwillumbah storm http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/lem/08-12-200001.html http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/lem/08-12-200002.html http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/lem/08-12-200007.html There was anvil precip falling between us and it, and the area it was in was pathetic for chasing - if we could have driven just that little bit closer it would have been 20 times more photogenic - it was still quite spectacular though We then drove north, driving through a line of developing storms around the Gold Coast area, eventually driving out of this as we made it to the southern suburbs of Brisbane. Before long a spectacular shelf cloud began developing http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/08-12-200005.html http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/lem/08-12-200010.html There were some spectacular pulsing Cg's observed as this was developing The foreground is blurry in a lot of these shots because we didn't know our way around the area, and lookouts were few and far between. If we didn't have digital cameras that we could hang out the window along the highway, half of these features woulnd't have been photographed Anyway - some shots of the far northern end of the line http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/lem/08-12-200013.html <--- that's smoke http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/lem/08-12-200014.html This is when things really started to heat up - as this shelf cloud approached, a very very very very very turbulent underside was revealed - between the cheers of joy and the " at )(*&# at (*& LOOK AT THAT!!!!" 's , we rattled off a few shots http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/08-12-200007.html http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/lem/08-12-200015.html http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/lem/08-12-200016.html <---- probably shows it best The movement under this thing was just job dropping - it was like a giant sauna! Unfortunately this line appeared to weaken as it moved over us - we had some strong gusty winds and heavy rain, but next to no lightning. We decided to head south towards a slightly darker horizon in the heavy rain. After some spectacular anvil crawlers, we arrived at a lookout where Jason capture part of an anvil crawler shooting through a rainbow! http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/lem/08-12-200020.html Shooting in low light conditions is stretching the limitations of the average digital camera, so none of these shots are perfect. They do show what we saw though Some backlit virga http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/08-12-200014.html The sunset http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/08-12-200015.html and then an explosion of colour http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/08-12-200015.html http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/lem/08-12-200025.html http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/08-12-200016.html There are a lot more pics on this page http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/products/reports/2000/december/8/index.html I'm ready for more!
