Beautiful unseasonably warm "Indian Summer" weather. To give you an idea of the warmth, Menas' average temps for the last part of Ocober are a high of 67F(19.4C) with a low of 43F(6.1C). Hi Arky.
Always enjoy reading your data here in Aus:....In contrast to your 'Indian Summer' here in  the central hills of Victoria we are still experiencing one of the coldest springs on record, the latter part of October which would normally be getting to our warmer period has in fact got colder than the start of winter, a friend of mine just a few kilometres from here (700m) has recorded 22 days of (soft hail sleet) since 1st of September, my average min in Sep was 1.2c  and came with 20 days of frost....'global warming' has forgotten Victoria. This morning as the temperature hovered on 2c with a howling south wind I was scratching my head.....regards Clyve H.

However, most of the mass is (as expected) directed heavily west of the Earth. Nevertheless, it looks like there IS an Earthward-directed component. VERY preliminary estimated plane of sky velocity (using only two frames) is near 2,000 km/sec to the west. It's another strong proton flare. Polar cap absorption event is in-progress again. Weathermen sprayed over dud predictions November 3, 2003 ADELAIDE Lord Mayor Michael Harbison has caused a storm among weather forecasters with his complaint that their predictions are "uncertain . . . causing problems for all". Frequently on the receiving end of public frustration over inaccurate forecasts, Bureau of Meteorology staff are used to being cursed. Forecasters, however, are quietly seething that Mr Harbison has effectively blamed them for Adelaide City Council wasting water by running sprinklers in a downpour last week. Bureau senior forecaster John Nairn said yesterday that he and his colleagues were not happy with Mr Harbison's criticism. "I do not like to see anybody making broad statements without any evidence to back it up," Mr Nairn said. "Our forecasts are actually improving and we have the statistics to prove it." While defending the council's water conservation policy and responding to criticism that sprinklers were operating in heavy rains, Mr Harbison told The Advertiser on Friday that the rainfall on Thursday night and again on Friday morning had been "unexpected". He then blamed the bureau for making "unpredictable" forecasts, saying that was why the sprinklers had not been turned off. "The uncertainty of the forecasts have been a problem for all," he said. However, Mr Nairn said that the bureau actually had forecast rain for the four days leading up to the Thursday downpour. Realising he had unwittingly touched a raw nerve, Mr Harbison retracted his claims yesterday. "I mean no criticism of the weather forecasting people and I apologise if I was criticising them as I think they do a good job," he said. "I also appreciate that it's not a completely predictable science and, certainly the weather we have been experiencing over the past two months has been unpredictable. I apologise if I have hurt their feelings." Mr Nairn said the bureau's annual report of 2001-02, showed that people were happy with the performance of forecasters. According to the report: # 87 PER CENT of people surveyed believed weather forecasts were "becoming more accurate". # 91 PER CENT of people were "satisfied" or "very satisfied" with the forecasts. # 81 PER CENT said they thought forecasts of rain - or the lack of it - were accurate. Mr Nairn said forecasters were often a "soft target" for public criticism. "We do expect to be criticised when we get it wrong. That is fair and it actually keeps us on our toes," Mr Nairn said. "But it is not fair to be kicked in the head when you are not looking." Mr Nairn responded slightly tongue-in-cheek when asked if the weather over the next few days could see Adelaide's lawns needing a non-meteorological drink. "Monday (today) is going to be a mild day and fine and mostly sunny, with Tuesday being warmer and 27 . . . so maybe a bit of watering is needed by then." This marks one of the most active storm seasons in years and rekindles memories from 5 or so years back of sitting on "my rock" and watching the thunderstorms spill over the ranges almost everyday. Unfortunately I don't have the luxury of doing that anymore as I'm working all the time. Evenin everybody!
Another classic example of storms crashing to their death and disappointing those with high expectations of them.
A storm was spotted on the radar at kyogle this afternoon when i got home and was headed toward the north end of the gold coast. this baby had red patches b4 it hit the border ranges, here are some pictures at this stage of the anvil at sunset:

it was heading NNE looking to cross the coast between brisbane and gold coast b4 it lost energy and turned to moderate rain on the southern end of the coast and that was it.
very pissed off indeed

The November 15th 2003 meeting agenda.

There are plans to introduce a revolutionary concept for the November meeting or beyond. This will still happen and will be announced in due course. As I said if it goes ahead, it will be history in the making.

Anyone who attends the meeting, feel free to help yourself to a cup of coffee and drinks. And then the BBQ will begin just before 5pm. JUST A REMINDER - IF THERE IS A STORM CHASE ON THE MEETING AND BBQ MAY BE DELAYED. PLEASE CHECK NOTICES AS TO THE MEETING DEFINITELY GOING AHEAD - only distant chases cancel meetings.

Being a BBQ meeting, the BBQ will begin by 5pm and the meeting / presentations 6:30pm. If you cannot make the BBQ or the start of the meeting, feel free to come along whatever time you can make it. The presentations are well worth attending and will last until 10:30pm mark.

The meeting program for the evening:

Presentation 1)

Darren Cooper will begin a series on Planetary Meteorology. Darren Cooper is a gifted scientist who has an overwhelming knowledge in astronomy. Just in some brief discussions in his research, I found it intriguing how the various atmospheres produce their form of weather based on their composition etc. This promises to be a colourful and unique presentation.

Presentation 2)

Mario Orazem, Geoff Thurtell, Keith Barnett, Rune Peitersen and myself (Jimmy Deguara) will have on display our booklets and observations from the past. During this shared presentation we introduce when and why we began to write down observations. This will be brief

followed by

Presentation 3)

Matthew Piper will present a program for a discussion on atmospheric soundings and how to understand them. In his presentations, Matthew will slowly go through the important aspects, features and definitions of soundings. This has been pitched at a basic level.

Presentation 4)

Brett Vilnis will present the 1994 bushfires. This documentary footage of the violent bushfire outbreaks of 1994 is from a professional videographer. If you have watched only footage on the news of bushfires, it doesn't always portray the reality of being up close and personal. I am sure those on this forum who were affected by bushfires in recent years know the reality.

Presentation 5)

David Croan and Jimmy Deguara will present on the 26th hailstorm event and associated outbreak with Gorilla hail reported and also cover the conditions of the 25th October Sydney supercell event. Edited video footage will be shown.
http://www.australiasevereweather.com/video/thumbs/2003/1026jd042.jpg

Presentation 6)

Jeff Brislane and Matthew Piper will lead a discussion supported by video on the recent chases including a squall line that engulfs Mt Cannobolis near Orange, and also slides from the 25th October event. More edited video - sit back and relax.

The venue:

Level 2 245 George Street
WINDSOR, NSW 2756

Please contact Brett Vilnis to register interest in attending manager at myisp.net.au

On the night, you can phone 0408020468 as we need to let people in the security door.

Future meetings preview:

A feature presentation on past severe weather outbreak events. Will begin 23rd March 1997 Jeff Brislane and myself this will have to be the following meeting. The model information, photographs and video of the event.

Surprise presentation on a tornadic event. Again the following meeting as we have gone over the quota.

Nick Moir - damage survey on Canberra bushfires This meeting or the following meeting.

Regards,
Jimmy Deguara

I suppose being so close to the northern extent of the ranges helps, I have noticed storms build over the southern ranges and normally die before getting any real distance into the southern suburbs. I believe that most of the storms the northern side have gotten over the past 2 months have really got organised over the Brindabella's and simply drifted over the northern suburbs, and then collapses before being recorded at the AP AWS. I recorded 6 thunderdays during September where as the AP recorded 5, During October 6 TD were recorded at the AP AWS, where as I have recorded 10 TD which most of theses have been weak, but none the less, produced audible thunder, which is all it takes for a TD to be recorded... Hi All,

I just wanted to reiterate the importance of the following issues:

DEADLINES
This goes for reporting and scanning. It is essential that you make your deadline as specified in your schedules. If you miss scanning deadlines, our clients receive newslines without the scans. If for some reason you are unable to make deadlines please let us know as soon as possible, don't wait for us to chase you. If you are unclear of the deadline times please contact us.

SIGNING OFF
Once you have finished reporting please remember to click the "finish publication box". This is very important otherwise it registers delay messages in our system that your publication has not been reported.

ERRORS
Please make sure you read over your work and are careful when submitting your reporting. Simple errors such as the wrong heading or page number can have huge consequences and are very time consuming to fix.

BEING CONTACTABLE
It is a part of your brief that you are contactable throughout the day. This is very important when we are chasing scans or sales requests.

ALERTS
Please be aware of alerts and make sure you read the digest. It is essential that you report all articles that include mentions of sales alerts - this will help earn you more $$.

Thank you for you co-operation. Please contact us if you have any questions on contractorssydney at rehame.com

Hi Jimmy :)

What incredible photo's you have taken - they are EXCELLENT. mate. Thank you so much for posting them. As I preach to my friend Natham, there are photo's all around you if you just look and mate, you have proved my point in spades. Although I am only a general meteorologist (amatuers) and not a storm chaser as such, I marvel at sucj photo's. I don't post photos as I still use film and not digital  "film "as such however I intend to correct that situation as soon as practical, also saves me a trip to my local library to use their scanner IF it's working.

I would like to see other photo's of meteoroligal phenomina as well as storms (hint hint!  :-) ) As I said I'm a general meteorologist and revel in the photo's posted here by other dedicated weather people, so much so I now have 2 CD ROMS filled with marvelous cloud photo's posted by  you guys(including Jane) and no doubt they will be the envy of BOM.  BOM's cloud chart needs something to be desired.

Again Jimmy, thank you so much for your time and effect and be assured it is appreciated by me and others I'd hazard to guess

Yours

Hi,

WINDSOR, NSW 2756

http://australiasevereweather.com/temp/maps/mapwindsor.gif

Please contact Brett Vilnis to register interest in attending manager at myisp.net.au

On the night, you can phone 0408020468 as we need to let people in the security door.

Future meetings preview:

A feature presentation on past severe weather outbreak events. Will begin 23rd March 1997 Jeff Brislane and myself this will have to be the following meeting. The model information, photographs and video of the event.

Surprise presentation on a tornadic event. Again the following meeting as we have gone over the quota.

Nick Moir - damage survey on Canberra bushfires This meeting or the following meeting.

Well if conditions remain as predicted across SA & Vic this week then we can get excited! A cursory look at Thursday 20th has really caught my attention, as a Victorian who can’t travel too far mid-week to chase. No doubt though, if things come off in SA on Wednesday & you can be there then you should be rewarded!

I've plotted some Skew-T's from NOAA for Thursday but with slightly higher surface temps (28°C) than the US models suggest for 06Z & based my analysis on the mid-Central District of Vic. I have
CAPE at 2200 & 500mb LI at -6°C. Speed shear is good but directional shear isn't as good as I'd like, 300mb NW at 90kts; 500mb NW at 60kts; 700mb NW at 40kts; 850mb WNW at 20kts & Surface W at 6kts. 850mb temps at 16° and with DP's in the high teens at surface level, latent lower-level moisture & drier upper levels, I can’t see why we shouldn’t put supercells down as a very strong possibility. All of the above based on current data being the same or similar on Thursday of course and provided the trough behaves the way it is supposed to. I wonder if anyone else has had a look forward yet at this potentially very exciting outbreak.

Hoping to christen the new additions tomorrow and make some worthwhile additions to my photo gallery. :-) My worry is that I might be too late for the action. Track reported in the press as 15km long and included destruction of one well built large old Queenslander style timber house, that was picked up whole and deposited some distance from the footings (unsure how far). Several not so well built farm sheds were also destroyed - blown to pieces leaving just a concrete foundation (again, from press reports). This level of destruction is consistent with an F3 rating IMO. I would suspect the powerlines have been repaired. It would be very unusual for power to still be out 3 weeks after the event. Given the level of damage to trees adjacent to the powerline, it is hard to imagine that the lines did not come down. Hi All,
Interesting to see that coastal fringe here in Sydney is covered in a thick pea soup. It has been a number of years since i have seen this. Refreshing indeed, dew point hovering around 20 degrees and temp just a nudge in front. The fog front(that sounds good!) is very well defineed and rests approx 50 metres up the road from my workplace on its merry way southwards.
Amazing contrasts in Sydneys temps today! Looks like a damp few days ahead, storms please!

Storms chasers call that sea fog ' thunderstorm fuel ' .
No better sign of impending storms than a good buildup of low level moisture.

Hello everyone,

I chased the Wimmera Region of Victoria on Wednesday 19th Nov (yesterday) & this afternoon observed a 50km radius north & west of Melbourne. This weekend I shall compile a report with a full set of images and video incl. time lapses. Intercepted several cells throughout the Wimmera on Wednesday of varying strength and size and enjoyed a nice light show from a vantage point at Kyneton well after midnight. Here's a few initial images I have done, will post a link to the report when completed.

Good to see the list starting to talk about an upcomming weather event for

once, its been a while!

I havent seen victorians get this excited since the last time they chased in

NSW! :)

Looks like a ripper setup, im slightly worried about the cloud being generated

(from a NSW point of view) especially if it hangs around on wednesday and into

thursday... will have to wait and see though :)

Good luck to any SAliens and VICS heading out for this system!.. as those
